March 5th 2024 Meeting Minutes

APRIL 9th & 10th

During the 24-hours of the 2024 Giving Challenge, starting at noon on April 9 & ending at noon on April 10, the focus of the Sarasota Emergency Radio Club (SERC) is to raise awareness for hurricane preparedness, and to raise money to fund our Sarasota Memorial Hospital emergency communications initiative (more on this, below).

Your donation during this 24-hour on-line fundraiser will strengthen our all-volunteer efforts to support emergency communications in our community. Your donations are greatly appreciated, and could help save lives.

Donations of $25 to $100 will be matched by The Patterson Foundation, who make it possible for any of us to be philanthropists!

So mark your calendar and set an alarm for noon on April 9th to come back here to donate!

Our Sarasota Emergency Radio Club counts Sarasota Memorial Hospital as a served agency. We support four SMH locations: SMH-Sarasota, SMH-Rand Blvd, SMH-Venice, and SMH-North Port. We prepare and drill communications back-up at all four locations in case their primary (commercial) radio communications, telephone, or Internet fail during a hurricane or other emergency. There is no greater need than making sure our hospitals are safe places where emergency care can continue without interruption during times of disaster.

The role of the Sarasota Emergency Radio Club includes providing the communications equipment necessary for the project to be successful. While the county-wide repeater network is robust, thanks to previous donations; 4-foot rooftop antennas, cabling, and connections are needed at three of the SMH facilities. That will enable our trained FCC licensed volunteers to arrive prior to storm force winds, on request of SMH, with our existing “Go Box” radios and connect in minutes.

This will insure reliable communication between and among the SMH sites, as well as the American Red Cross, from where we communicate out of our radio room with the Sarasota County Emergency Operations Center.

In addition to voice communications we can provide digital packet radio services, with the ability to send email messages, forms and spreadsheets over the airwaves to convey timely (non-confidential) information. Our SRQ ARES (Auxiliary Radio Emergency Service) volunteer radio operators are trained using ICS (Incident Command System) protocols and forms that are the standard in Emergency Communications operations.

Please donate to our all-volunteer efforts that support emergency communications in our community. Your donations are greatly appreciated, and could help save lives.

It is our privilege to support Sarasota Memorial Hospital, the American Red Cross, and the residents of Sarasota County. Thank you for your support.
