Third Party Options
Review 69 by : Gi0ZGB, Gerry, Armagh, N. Ireland 4-Jan-2003
I decided to add a few third party extras to the TS-50 and make it more useful and user friendly. I fitted the Inrad SSB filter and integrated RF Speech Processor, TX monitor and VOX units. The modifications were an outstanding success, the SSB filter was a fantastic improvment to the selectivity, the I.F. shift now very effective rejecting adjacent inteference, the RF Processor and other units being excellent. What a pity Kenwood dont fit accessories like these and make this classic rig a red hot performer.
Pros: Reliability
Cons: Missing a few bells & whistles
Time owned: Over two years - Price: New £499 GBP 2001
Nice piece of kit

Very pleased with the TS50.
No unnecessary bells and whistles, just a nice simple mobile HF radio, which is extremely easy to operate.
A speech processor would have been a nice inclusion, but even without, the 50 certainly carries an RF punch.
Highly recommended.
Pros: Proper mobile HF rig with punch.
Cons: No speech processing
Time owned: Less than one year - Price: 550 PDS stg
An excellent choice

The TS-50S is an excellent equipment, working in practical operation much better that some tech reviews indicated. Normally, use AIP ON, then you have best dynamic range. Only under very low signal conditions switch AIP OFF.
In contrast to other opinions, a speech compressor is NOT required. Comparing TS-50 with TS-2000 with speechprocesser ON, the TS-50
always obtained stronger reports and cleaner modulation.
Important is to have low SWR for high power output and cleanest signal.
Pros: The best HF mobile transceiver I ever had
Cons: For CW operation the optional CW filter is recommended
Time owned: Over two years - Price: close to 1000 USD for new
