Antennas : Baluns
  • Choking balun for 160-30 meter band - Choking balun for lower HF and MF bands. (1.8MHz - 10MHz). Requiring a choking balun to isolate the potential RF pick up on the coax cable as it runs past equipment such as computer within the radio room at lower HF and MF frequencies a simple method of winding RG58 coax onto a Powdered Iron Toroid Core was constructed.

Antennas : Fan Dipole
  • Fan Dipoles 10/15/20m and 12/17/30m - How to build Fan-Dipoles by DK7ZB. Experiences with various band combinations. Not all combinations are working properly. If the frequencies are to close together the impedances will lead to a very bad SWR. This happens with the bands 10-12-15m or 15-17-20m.

Antennas : Feed Lines : Coax Stubs
  • The Quarter-wave stub - The Quarter-wave stub can be used for many purposes. If it is left with an open end it can be used as a notch filter to attenuate certain frequencies. A quarter wave length of a transmission line can also be used as an impedance transformer, to know more about the Quarter-wave impedance transformer

  • Recognition of CW signs at different listening levels and frequencies - The recognition of telegraphy masked by noise at 40 and 80 signs/min telegraphy speed was studied in 10 normal-hearing subjects at different sound pressure levels (25-85 dB SPL in steps of 5 dB) as well as at different test frequencies (2000, 1000, 800, 630, 500 and 250 Hz). The ability to recognize the signs varied with varying SPL. Recognition for most of the subjects was best at an SPL close to 70 dB. All subjects improved their recognition as the frequency was lowered to 500 Hz, some even at 250 Hz. These facts should be taken into consideration when training telegraphy operators as well as in the construction of radio receivers to permit listening at low frequencies. Furthermore, the critical ratio was calculated at the different test frequencies.

Operating Modes : Repeaters
  • Ham Radio: Using Repeaters - The most basic form of repeater receives communication on one frequency and re-transmits at a different frequency. This is known as duplex communication. Repeaters are generally set up to operate with FM modulation on the amateur bands within the VHF (30 MHZ – 300 MHZ) and UHF frequencies (300 MHZ – 3 GHz). These are generally the frequencies used by handheld and mobile devices.

Radio Equipment : HF Transceivers : Icom IC-706
  • Icom 706MkIIG Frequency Calibration - Unlike older radios, the 706 uses only one crystal oscillator (called the Master Oscillator). All other frequencies in the radio (L.O., 3-4 I.F. stages, VFO, and CW-offset) are computer-derived from the Master Oscillator. This makes it relatively simple to frequency-align the radio, so that it agrees with the Frequency Display in all modes.

Technical Reference : Spectrum Analyzers
  • Specan Spectrum analyzer - The Specan is actually a very simple but robustly built receiver. it is, in essence, a double conversion superhet receiver with 112 Mhz and 12 Mhz Intermediate frequencies. The first mixer uses an Si570 as the local oscillator. The Ardiuno that controls the Specan is a very flexible microcontroller board that you can program in simple C language
