IAT is an excel sheet table evaluate parameters of VHF UHF antennas edited by Vladimir UR5EAZ. The difference between this tool and the existing VE7BQH Antenna Table is the use of G / T and C / N instead of the G / Ta parameter. In this table, Vladimir applies the ITU recommendations to assess the noise properties of a radio receiving system and shows the advantage of the G / T concept over the G / Ta concept when choosing an antenna.

The most basic form of repeater receives communication on one frequency and re-transmits it on a different frequency, a process known as duplex communication. This capability significantly extends the range of handheld and mobile radios, as repeaters are typically situated at elevated locations with high-gain antennas and greater transmit power. Repeaters commonly operate with FM modulation on the VHF (30 MHz – 300 MHz) and UHF (300 MHz – 3 GHz) amateur bands, which are ideal for portable and mobile devices. Access to repeaters is often controlled by a CTCSS or PL tone, an inaudible signal that prevents the repeater from retransmitting background noise. This mechanism ensures efficient use of the frequency and prevents illegal continuous transmission. Canadian regulations, for instance, require an Advanced amateur radio license and an available frequency within the band to set up a repeater, each assigned a unique call sign and transmit frequency. Configuring a radio for repeater use involves knowing the repeater's transmit frequency, its receive frequency offset (e.g., -600 KHz for VHF or +5 MHz for UHF), and the necessary CTCSS tone. The article references resources like Repeater Book for locating repeaters and provides practical examples for initiating and concluding a basic repeater session, emphasizing clear identification and concise communication.

These SWR measurements, referenced to 50-ohm impedance, were taken at the transmitter end of the feed line. The article also touches upon the necessity of a balun for proper impedance matching between the balanced J-pole and unbalanced coaxial feed line, suggesting a split-core cylindrical ferrite for this purpose.

For optimal VHF operating, the antenna is installed at a height of 30 feet or higher.

Effective suppression of harmonics and parasitic radiation from HF transmitters is crucial, especially with the increasing sensitivity of VHF/UHF radio channels to interference. This project details a hybrid low-pass filter (LPF) designed to operate across the HF bands up to 51 MHz, making it suitable for 6-meter band operations while providing deep VHF/UHF suppression. The design addresses the challenge of modern interference landscapes, where even microvolt-level signals can disrupt wireless sensors and other simple VHF/UHF receivers. The filter utilizes a single elliptic link, combining high cutoff steepness with robust suppression in the hundreds of megahertz range. A key feature is the use of only two standard capacitor values, simplifying construction and component sourcing. The article provides a detailed schematic, performance characteristics, and _RFSim99_ model file, demonstrating a reflection coefficient S11 below 0.017 (VSWR < 1.03) across 1-51 MHz, ensuring minimal degradation to the antenna system. Operating amateur radio satellites presents unique challenges, particularly concerning antenna design and signal propagation. Juan Antonio Fernández Montaña, EA4CYQ, recounts his three-year journey into satellite communication, starting with initial guidance from EB4DKA. His early experiments involved a portable 1/4 wave VHF antenna with four 1/4 wave ground planes, designed for hand-held use to adjust polarity. This setup, paired with an FT-3000M transceiver, allowed full-duplex operation on **VHF** transmit and **UHF** receive, proving effective for early contacts on satellites like AO27, UO14, and SO35. EA4CYQ's experience highlights the critical role of coaxial cable loss and antenna polarization. After encountering significant signal degradation with longer RG213 runs, he experimented with a 1/2 inch commercial cable, noting improved reception but persistent fading due to varying satellite polarities. This led to the construction of an **Eggbeater II** antenna, an omnidirectional UHF design offering horizontal polarization at the horizon and circular right polarization at higher elevation angles. Subsequent modifications resulted in the directional **TPM2** antenna, which provided sufficient gain for LEO satellites with a wide 30-degree lobe, enabling consistent contacts from his home station. The article concludes with practical insights on the performance of the Eggbeater II for both UHF and VHF, and the TPM2 for UHF, emphasizing their utility for portable and fixed operations. EA4CYQ's journey underscores the iterative process of antenna development and the importance of adapting designs to overcome real-world propagation challenges in satellite communications.

This comprehensive article dispels common misconceptions about Standing Wave Ratio (SWR) in amateur radio. The author explains that SWR is not an antenna property but a measure of the entire antenna system, representing the mismatch between transmission line and load impedance. Contrary to popular belief, modest SWR values (under 3:1) typically cause minimal power loss in HF applications. The article demonstrates mathematically why obsession with achieving 1:1 SWR is often unnecessary, explains when SWR matters more (QRO, QRP, VHF/UHF), and explores effective matching techniques including proper ATU placement and quarter-wavelength transformers.

A 5/8-wavelength vertical antenna for 2-meter FM operation is detailed, focusing on eliminating loading coils by utilizing a series inductor to cancel capacitive reactance at the feed point, thereby presenting a 50-ohm impedance match. The design illustrates three basic configurations, including a method employing a short-circuited coaxial stub for inductance, as implemented by K4LPQ. An alternative design is presented where the center conductor of the stub is extended one-quarter wavelength, creating a signal-frequency short and allowing for an insulated wire stub to develop the required series inductance. The article provides electrical theory and mechanical considerations for building the antenna, emphasizing the adjustment of stub length for proper impedance matching. This technical documentation is intended for amateur radio operators interested in homebrewing VHF antennas, offering practical insights into impedance matching techniques for vertical radiators.

This article explores the role of velocity factor (VF) in calculating stub lengths for VHF/UHF Baluns. It clarifies misconceptions about VF's relevance, distinguishing between coaxial cable interior fields and external stub fields. Practical examples, such as the Pawsey Stub and Coaxial Cable Balun, are analyzed alongside experimental findings. The results reveal that traditional VF adjustments are unnecessary for stubs with external fields but critical for internal coaxial applications. Historical and theoretical insights provide a comprehensive perspective for antenna enthusiasts and designers.

Constructing a **J-Pole antenna** from 450 Ohm ladder line for 2-meter (144 MHz) and 70-centimeter (440 MHz) operation involves specific calculations and assembly steps. The design, based on an earlier KD6GLF concept using 300 Ohm twinlead, features a ¾ wavelength radiator and a ¼ wavelength matching stub, functioning as an end-fed half-wave antenna without requiring ground radials. It offers a gain of 2.4 dB over isotropic. The resource provides the formulas for determining the lengths of the ¾ wave radiator and ¼ wave stub, incorporating a velocity factor of 91% for 450 Ohm ladder line. For 146 MHz, the radiator measures 55 3/16 inches and the stub 18 3/8 inches. Construction details include cutting a 57¾-inch piece of ladder line, stripping 4 inches from one end, and attaching a 24-inch section of RG58 or RG8X coax with a 3-5 turn RF choke. SWR adjustment is achieved by sliding a shorting bar or by incrementally trimming the elements at a 1:3 ratio (stub to radiator). The goal is a 1:1.1 SWR at 146 MHz, which typically yields 1:1.2 at 446 MHz. The article also discusses power handling, noting that while 10-15 watts is fine, 50 watts may increase SWR to 1:2.1, and advises keeping the antenna away from other objects to prevent coupling and SWR degradation.
