A 15-pin data switch, typically a rotary-knob type designed for DB-25 connectors, forms the basis for this microphone selector project. The resource details the conversion process, which involves replacing the original DB-25 connectors with **RJ-45** or **RJ-12** jacks to accommodate modern amateur radio microphones. It specifically addresses wiring for radios like the Icom IC-706 series (including the IC-7000 and IC-703) and Yaesu transceivers such as the FT-857, FT-897, FT-817, FT-7800, FT-7900, FT-8800, FT-8900, FTM-100, and FTM-400. The design ensures all microphone lines are switched straight through, with separate contacts for external speaker/headphone jacks, allowing simultaneous switching. The project emphasizes the practical application of switching between a headset for net control and a hand mic for rag-chewing without repeatedly plugging and unplugging cables. It highlights modifications to the original concept, such as eliminating a separate PTT jack by integrating PTT into headset cables and building the external speaker cable directly into the selector. The article provides guidance on managing the non-color-coded wiring often found in these data switches by soldering wires one by one from old to new connectors, ensuring correct pin alignment. This approach simplifies the conversion, making it accessible for hams seeking a functional and cost-effective mic switching solution.

When operating Parks on the Air (POTA) in public spaces, maintaining a low profile can be advantageous, as VA3KOT discovered. This antenna design draws inspiration from several established concepts: Peter Waters G3OJV's _Invisible HF Vertical_, which uses a 13ft vertical wire and ground radials; Greg KJ6ER's _POTA PERformer_ antenna, known for its raised vertical and reduced radial count; and ideas from Jim Heath W6LG and Frank K4FMH regarding telescoping whips on photographer's tripods. The resulting antenna combines a shortened portable design with a raised feedpoint and two raised radial wires, making it suitable for multiple bands. The construction incorporates a 4:1 impedance transformer, similar to a _Rybakov_ antenna, and necessitates an external tuner for optimal performance across the bands. This approach aims to minimize visual impact while still providing effective HF communication capabilities. VA3KOT built and field-tested this antenna, reporting positive results during POTA activations. The article provides practical insights into its design and operational considerations for fellow activators seeking discreet yet efficient portable setups.

An FCP is not magic. It has no gain. An FCP improves an antenna system by replacing more loss with less loss. Some have been able to erect better wires in the air because the small size of the FCP allowed better placement of the antenna.

LZ1AQ describes a versatile QRP antenna tuner that switches between Pi and Tee configurations with a single toggle. Using two variable capacitors and a seven-switch stepped inductor providing 128 increments (0.16 to 18.7 uH), this compact design handles 3.5 to 28 MHz with excellent matching range. The Pi mode works best for certain impedances while Tee mode proves more universal, matching loads the Pi cannot. Built in a plastic enclosure using salvaged radio capacitors, the tuner operates reliably up to 100 watts with proper antennas, though it's optimized for QRP service with random wires.

Steve Nichols, G0KYA, presents a practical examination of ground systems for vertical antennas, drawing heavily on the empirical research of Rudy Severns, N6LF. He explains that a robust radial field is crucial for ground-dependent verticals, effectively replacing the antenna's "missing half" and mitigating severe RF absorption in lossy soil. Nichols clarifies that surface radials do not strictly require a quarter-wavelength; instead, deploying a minimum of 16 to 32 shorter wires often yields superior results compared to fewer, longer ones. The presentation also addresses the common SWR paradox: a poor ground might show a perfect 1:1 match, but adding radials, while potentially raising the SWR to around 1.4:1, significantly improves true radiation efficiency. Nichols defines counterpoises as elevated wire networks that substitute for earth connections, offering solutions for limited-space installations, such as the **Folded Counterpoise (FCP)** for 160 meters. This resource provides actionable engineering data for optimizing vertical antenna performance.

You can bend the wires in a half-wave dipole so that it takes up less space, with minimal loss of efficiency. It is advisable to get the ends of the antenna as high as possible, especially if children and animals are kept in the area around the antenna, as there are very high tensions on the ends of the antenna during transmission! The **5-Port 12 Volt DC Power Strip Kit (Rev 4)** offers a practical solution for managing shack power distribution, providing one input and five fused outputs. All connections utilize the ubiquitous Anderson PowerPole connectors, a standard for many amateur radio operators, ensuring a clean, organized, and safe way to power multiple 12 VDC transceivers and accessories from a single source. This design mitigates the common issue of tangled wires and overloaded connections in a typical ham shack. Rated for a maximum current of 20 Amps at 12 VDC, the strip incorporates an integrated LED to indicate when external power is applied. Each output is individually fused, a critical safety feature that protects connected equipment from overcurrent conditions without affecting other devices on the strip. This level of protection is essential for preserving sensitive radio gear during operation. Assembly requires basic soldering skills and hand tools, with a high-power soldering iron and wide chisel tip specifically recommended for best results. The kit's compact dimensions of 4.13" x 1.78" allow for flexible mounting via screw holes, making it suitable for various shack configurations and portable operations.
