  • UniBalun: Lightweight Balun/UnUn PCB for QRP Radios (1:1, 1:4, 1:49) - The UniBalun is a PCB for building a lightweight antenna transformer (Balun) or impedance converter (UnUn) for low power radios. By soldering jumpers and a toroid core, you can create a 1:1, 1:4 Balun or 1:49, 1:9 UnUn. The latest revision (1.2) includes improved pads and supports both BNC and SMA connectors. Build instructions are available for German speakers.

Antennas : End-Fed
  • G4WIF End Fed Half Wave Antenna  updated - Opting for a visually appealing inverted L configuration, G4WIF anchors the End Fed Half Wave antenna to an old clothes line pole, seeking cost-effectiveness in their endeavor. Despite initial misconceptions about transformer components, a £7.95 investment in a T240-43 toroid and DIY mounting container resolves the issue. Reflecting on commercial alternatives, G4WIF's homemade solution proves both economical and sufficient for their amateur radio needs.

Antennas : Receiving
  • RX Loop antenna - This loop antenna is intended to be connected as an antenna for receivers that do not have a built-in antenna such as an HF set or an old tube radio. This square barrel is wound on a wooden frame. It consists of two windings that are galvanically isolated from each other, a main and a coupling winding. The diameter is about 40 cm.

Operating Modes : Amtor
  • Operating AMTOR - Putting one of those old modems back into use.AMTOR is an acronym for AMateur Teleprinting Over Radio and was mostly used on HF. The mode is based on the marine SITOR code that was introduced to amateur radio by Peter, G3PLX. The mode is an enhancement of RTTY with active error correction that copes reasonably well with interference and fading.

  • 40 MHz 8m Band Amateur Radio Exploration - The 8m ISM band, a unique frequency range between 10m and 6m, holds potential for amateur radio enthusiasts, yet it remains largely unallocated. This spectrum offers fertile ground for research and self-training. The author's experience with low-power transmissions and WSPR testing highlights the band's capabilities and the need for a narrow, speech-free amateur allocation to encourage experimentation. Discover the world of 8m ISM radio exploration and its future possibilities.

Radio Equipment : HF Transceivers : Icom IC-706
  • Icom 706MkIIG Frequency Calibration - Unlike older radios, the 706 uses only one crystal oscillator (called the Master Oscillator). All other frequencies in the radio (L.O., 3-4 I.F. stages, VFO, and CW-offset) are computer-derived from the Master Oscillator. This makes it relatively simple to frequency-align the radio, so that it agrees with the Frequency Display in all modes.

  • Repair or Replace Electrolytic Capacitors - For low voltage applications, like cathode bypass capacitors, most vintage types have an axial configuration, which is less common today but still available. Electrolytic power supply caps likely constitute the single worst liability in old audio, radio and test equipment. • Stingray Marine Transceiver - Recently, at the Ballarat Hamfest, the author acquired an old Marine transceiver for just $10, charmed by its sturdy construction and waterproofing. Made by Findlay Communications in Sydney, this crystal-controlled transceiver had been dormant but was reinvigorated with minor fixes. A manual was sourced, and further repairs were made, including an ingenious crystal oscillator replacement using an Si5351a controlled by an Arduino. The refurbished radio, complete with a fresh coat of paint and added customizations, is now operational for 160m AM and 30m SSB. A successful and cost-effective restoration.

  • Mini Satellite-Antenna Rotator Mk1 - This project is a portable device used to automatically point a directional antenna towards an orbiting satellite. It takes all the effort out of little kids holding the antenna and figuring out where to point it. It allows students to talk through Amateur Radio satellites or download weather satellite images. Note: This is a complex DIY project for the advanced kit constructor.

  • Baofeng UV5R TRRS Adapter - A tiny board, which allows a smartphone or similiar device to connect to the Baofeng UV5R radio via a TRRS audio connector. It allows for connecting the radio to a software TNC app such as APRSDroid or PocketPacket. Solder on the components, solder on the cables, then provide some stress relief, (I use solid-core wire and heat shrink tubing), and you can use your UV5R with your smartphone for APRS on the cheap.
