  • Repairing a dead Kenwood TS-850S  new - The author fixed a friend's Kenwood TS-850S radio, which suffered from Capacitor Plague, a common problem in 1990s electronics where capacitors leak and damage circuit boards. The CAR board, responsible for generating signals, was especially affected. The author cleaned the board, replaced the capacitors, and repaired a broken trace. Although the radio mostly functioned afterward, the "Slope Tune" control behaved abnormally. The cause seems to be a software issue, not a hardware one.

  • Yaesu FT-817 Audio Enhancement: Heathkit-inspired Homebrew Project - Inspired by Heathkit, author aimed to enhance his Yaesu FT-817 with audio and RF processing. Design goals included a compact enclosure, PCB simplicity, matching jacks, a visual meter, and a built-in signal generator. Despite challenges in finding a suitable compressor IC for a 5V DC mic jack, he chose the Analog Devices SSM2165/2166 series. Prototyping with a solderless breadboard, author planned a PCB layout for its versatile performance in communication use.

  • A 2 meter band-pass cavity using surplus Heliax - Cavity is often required at a busy site to not only prevent its receiver from being overloaded by off-frequency signals, but also be a good neighbour and prevent low-level signals from your transmitter from getting into other users receivers - not to mention the preventing of those other signal from getting back into your transmitter to generate spurious signals in its own right.

  • Automatic Roger Beep for VHF/UHF Contests  new - This project details an automatic roger beep circuit for VHF/UHF contests. Built around a Microchip PIC microcontroller, the design detects PTT (Push-To-Talk) activation and generates a brief tone upon release, mimicking a "roger beep" to signal the end of transmission. The circuit utilizes readily available components and includes downloadable resources for PCB layout and firmware.
