This resource presents a technical guide detailing antenna measurement theory, focusing on the fundamental electromagnetic principles governing antenna operation and characterization. It delineates the three primary spatial regions surrounding an antenna: the reactive field (0 < r < lambda/2pi), the radiating near-field (lambda/2pi < r < 2D2/lambda), and the radiating far-field (r > **2D2/lambda**). The guide defines key antenna parameters, including polarization, input impedance, VSWR, directivity, gain, efficiency, Effective Isotropically Radiated Power (EIRP), antenna noise temperature, and the G/T parameter. Radiation patterns are discussed, with examples of both rectangular and polar forms, emphasizing the determination of patterns in the far-field region for constant radial distance and frequency, typically characterized by a main beam with **3 dB** beamwidth and sidelobes. The document further elaborates on the mathematical definitions of these parameters, such as the Poynting vector (E x H*) for electromagnetic waves and the relationship between antenna gain and directivity. It also introduces related terms like mixers, which are critical components in antenna measurement instrumentation for frequency conversion (fIF = fRF +/-nfLO). The theoretical framework provided supports the scientific analysis of antenna performance, applicable to various antenna types and operational frequencies. The _Italian VHF Beacons_ resource provides a detailed listing of active and QRT amateur radio beacons operating across VHF, UHF, and SHF bands within Italy. Each entry specifies the beacon's callsign (e.g., IQ1SP/B), operating frequency (e.g., 144.411 MHz), QTH locator (e.g., JN44VC), effective radiated power (ERP) in watts, and antenna configuration (e.g., Big Wheel, 4x Dipole, Yagi). This data is crucial for radio amateurs involved in propagation studies, equipment testing, and long-distance (DX) communication on these higher frequency bands, offering fixed signal sources for monitoring. This compilation, last updated in October 2005, serves as a historical snapshot of Italian beacon activity. For instance, it lists several 144 MHz beacons with ERPs ranging from **0.1W** to **10W**, and higher frequency beacons such as I8EMG/B on 1296.880 MHz and I3EME/B on 24192.132 MHz. The inclusion of QRT (Quiet Radio Teletype) status for many entries indicates the dynamic nature of beacon operations over time. Users can utilize this information to identify potential signal sources for band openings or to calibrate their receiving equipment against known transmissions.

A 5/8-wavelength vertical antenna offers a lower angle of radiation compared to a 1/4-wavelength vertical, which is crucial for maximizing DX contacts. This design achieves its optimal radiation pattern by effectively compressing the main lobe closer to the horizon, resulting in a more efficient signal path for long-distance communication. The article details how the current distribution along the antenna element influences the radiation pattern, illustrating why a 5/8-wave radiator typically exhibits a gain of approximately **3 dB** over a 1/4-wave vertical when both are operating over a perfect ground plane. Understanding the _radiation pattern_ and current distribution is key to selecting the appropriate vertical antenna for specific operating goals. While a 1/4-wave vertical is simpler to implement and often used for local contacts, the 5/8-wave design is preferred by DXers seeking to exploit its lower take-off angle. The article also touches upon the practical considerations of feeding a 5/8-wave vertical, which typically requires a matching network to transform its inherent reactive impedance to a standard 50-ohm feedline impedance. This technical explanation clarifies the performance differences.

The designer provides insights into how physical dimensions and ground conditions influence key antenna parameters like forward gain, front-to-back ratio, and feed-point impedance, which is typically close to 50 ohms. It also includes a feature to model the effect of coaxial cable losses on **VSWR** at the transmitter end, distinguishing it from the feed-point VSWR. This helps operators understand the actual radiated power efficiency versus the apparent match at the transceiver, offering a practical perspective on antenna system performance in portable operations.

Chavdar Levkov, LZ1AQ, presents an experimental comparison of small wideband magnetic loops, building on his previous work on wideband active small magnetic loop antennas. His research focuses on increasing loop sensitivity by maximizing the short-circuit current, which is directly tied to the "loop factor" M = A/L, where A is the equivalent loop area and L is its inductance. Levkov's methodology involves reducing inductance and increasing area through parallel or coplanar crossed (CC) configurations, comparing these designs against a reference single quad loop of 1 m2 area. Experimental verification included testing three distinct loop types: a simple quad loop, two coplanar crossed (CC) loops, and eight parallel loops, all designed to have a total geometric area of 1 m2. Measurements were conducted at 1.8, 3.5, 7, and 10 MHz using a small transmitter 270 meters away, with a Perseus direct sampling receiver for precise signal level assessment. The results consistently showed that CC loops, particularly Loop 5 (two CC circular loops with 1.44 m2 total area), yielded significantly higher currents, up to 9.1 dB over the reference loop at 3.5 MHz, validating M as a reliable predictor of loop sensitivity. Numerical simulations using MMANA further corroborated the experimental findings, demonstrating an almost perfect correlation between the calculated M factor and the induced loop current for 15 different loop models. Levkov concludes that CC loops offer superior sensitivity for a given loop area, while parallel loops are advantageous for minimizing physical volume. Practical recommendations suggest using loops with an M factor greater than 0.5 uA/pT for quiet rural environments, and he provides a spreadsheet tool, WLoop_calc.xls, to aid in optimizing loop configurations for specific operational needs.
