The ever-popular inverted L antnna, a fast to implement and setup shortwave antenna project by Arnie Coro C02KK

A self-supporting vertical antenna design for stationary-mobile HF-VHF operation is presented, emphasizing ease of construction with common materials like a fiberglass fishing rod and PVC pipe. The design focuses on creating a set of no-tuner monoband radiators for bands such as **2m**, **6m**, 10m, and 12m, with an overall radiator support length of 3.3m. The construction process details the assembly of the antenna base using a magnetic mount, PL-259 connector, and PVC pipe sections, which then supports the telescopic fishing rod. Radiator extensions are cut to achieve quarter-wave resonance on specific bands, with detailed instructions for 6m (50-51 MHz), 10m (28.5 MHz), and 12m (24.9 MHz). For lower HF bands like 15m, 17m, and 20m, the design incorporates base-loading coils, with specific turn counts provided (e.g., 21 turns for 20m). The project also suggests using an _antenna analyzer_ for precise tuning of extensions and coils, moving beyond theoretical values to achieve optimal performance. The author, _IK1ZYW_, notes that for 80m and 160m, the antenna becomes less efficient as a vertical, suggesting alternative configurations like an inverted-V dipole or asymmetrical inverted-L.

A 160 meter antenna with a base loading coil used to tune the two lower frequency segments of the band.

The document provides a detailed guide on modifying an inverted-L antenna to include the 160 meters band. This enhancement allows amateur radio operators to utilize the lower frequency effectively, which is crucial for long-distance communication, especially during the night. The inverted-L design is popular due to its compact size and ease of installation, making it suitable for various environments. By adding top band capabilities, operators can engage in DXing and contesting on 160m, expanding their operational range and opportunities. The guide includes practical tips and considerations for construction, ensuring that the antenna maintains its performance across the extended frequency range. It discusses the necessary adjustments and materials required for the modification, along with potential challenges and solutions. Whether you are a seasoned operator or a beginner, this project can enhance your station's capabilities, allowing for more versatile operations and improved signal quality on the 160m band.

Experiments with an 80 meter Inverted L Quarter wave antenna

The NB6Zep Antenna, an electrically shortened 80-meter end-fed wire, addresses space constraints for low-band operation by integrating two loading coils into a 37-foot wire. This design, modeled with _EZNEC_, explores configurations like the quarter-wave sloper and inverted-L, with the latter providing a more vertical radiation pattern and practical backyard deployment. The resource details specific coil construction, recommending 21 uH coils made from _BW coil stock #3026_ or similar, and outlines wire segment lengths for optimal tuning. Performance analysis indicates a radiating efficiency of approximately 27% with good ground conductivity, resulting in a signal typically 3-4 dB down compared to a full-size quarter-wave vertical. The antenna exhibits a narrow bandwidth, around 50 kHz, due to its high Q, necessitating a tuner for broader band operation. Feedpoint impedance is low, with ground resistance playing a critical role in achieving a usable SWR. The article emphasizes the importance of an effective ground rod at the feedpoint for proper operation and tuning, suggesting an antenna analyzer for precise adjustments. It confirms the antenna's suitability for DX, citing successful contacts from Oregon to the East Coast and Hawaii on a 160-meter variant, making it a viable option for urban operators seeking low-angle radiation on 80 meters.

The 60-page PDF document, "Antenna Systems and Theory For The Non-Technical Ham" by Jim Abercrombie, N4JA, provides a foundational understanding of antenna systems. It explains basic antenna theory, including how antennas work, electromagnetic wave polarization, and the role of frequency. The resource details various antenna types such as flat top dipoles, inverted-V dipoles, shortened loaded dipoles, G5RV dipoles, Carolina Windoms, and end-fed configurations. Vertical antennas, including ground-mounted trapped verticals and inverted-L verticals, are also covered. Directional beam antennas like monoband Yagis, cubical quads, and log-periodic arrays are discussed. Propagation modes, including ground-wave, direct wave, and skywave propagation, are explained in detail, with specific attention to the D, E, and F layers of the ionosphere and their effects on HF communication. Technical concepts such as standing wave ratio, decibels, resistance, and reactance are defined, along with calculations for half-wave resonant dipole lengths. The document addresses feed-line radiation, balun applications, and critical antenna and tower safety considerations. It aims to dispel common antenna myths and educate hams on making informed antenna choices.

160 to 40 meters inverted L antennas projects

Discovering a solution for limited space, the inverted L HF antenna emerges as a stellar performer. Half the size of a dipole, it ensures optimal installation in restricted areas, maintaining superb transmission (TX) and reception (RX) characteristics. Spectrum Communications' multi-band version, featuring traps, proves even more space-friendly without compromising performance. A fiberglass pole offers sturdy support, while proper grounding, an RF choke, and occasional tuning contribute to a high-performing and reliable antenna system.

An Inverted-L with its long leg sloping to the ground. It will still work very good, even if the horizontal wire has to be sloped diagonally to the ground, as long as you have enough horizontal space to keep it at about a 45 degree angle or more from the pole.

Medium power BMU (Base Matching Unit) intended for 42 foot to 48 foot vertical, sloper, or Inverted-L antennas.

This article details an Inverted-L antenna design optimized for 160-meter band operation, consisting of a 10m vertical section and a 28m horizontal section supported by Spiderpoles. Despite its relatively low height compared to the wavelength, the antenna has demonstrated impressive DX capabilities, achieving contacts up to 3,453 miles into Asiatic Russia. The system incorporates a Pi-Network ATU at the base for tuning flexibility. While modeling shows a radiation pattern favoring the South, practical operation indicates effective all-round coverage on Top Band.
