The HB9ABX RoomCap antenna document details the construction and performance characteristics of a compact HF antenna design. It presents a series of comparative field tests conducted between July and September 2005, evaluating the HB9ABX antenna against established designs like the Microvert MV-500, Cushcraft R5/R7000 verticals, and a 5-element DJ2UT Yagi beam. Specific test scenarios include mobile installations, rooftop deployments, and comparisons on 20m, 40m, 80m, and 160m bands, with signal reports from various European and DX stations. The resource emphasizes the antenna's small physical footprint and its claimed efficiency across multiple HF bands. Test results consistently show the HB9ABX antenna performing comparably to, and often outperforming, larger reference antennas in terms of received signal strength, with reported differences of 1 to 2 S-points (6-12 dB) in many contacts. Notably, a 20m DX test on July 26, 2005, indicated the 1.3m HB9ABX radiator yielded 2-3 S-points stronger signals than an R7000 vertical for US DX stations. An August 12, 2005, test on 40m highlighted the HB9ABX's superior signal-to-noise ratio in urban QRM, demonstrating 10-18 dB better performance than an R7000. The document includes specific callsigns, signal reports, and QTHs for each comparison, providing empirical data for the antenna's performance claims.

For amateur radio operators utilizing _APRS_ or requiring an external antenna for their GPS receiver, this resource details the construction of a compact, circularly polarized mobile antenna. The design is based on a classic turnstile configuration, employing two dipoles rotated 90° from each other and spaced a quarter-wavelength above a ground plane. A parallel-plate transmission line, fabricated from printed circuit board material, serves as both the connection method and mounting post for the dipoles, simplifying the feed network for circular polarization at 1.57542 GHz. The article outlines the fabrication process, starting with a 4-inch diameter hobby tin or brass base plate and #14 solid copper wire elements. It specifies using _RG-58/U_ or similar 50-ohm coax, with an 8-foot maximum length to minimize loss at the GPS frequency. The parallel-plate transmission line is constructed from two 2-inch lengths of single-sided _FR-4_ or G10 PCB material, 0.062-inch thick, with a specific 45° microwave turn cut on the active side. Final assembly involves an 8-ounce cream cheese container as a radome, and the article discusses the self-phased quadrature feed method to achieve circular polarization without a coaxial phasing line, resulting in an omnidirectional pattern suitable for GPS satellite reception.

Examines the four basic components of a mobile antenna system: the antenna, coaxial cable, antenna stud, and the mount, emphasizing mount selection as the most complex decision. Modern vehicle designs, including the absence of metal rain gutters and specific trunk configurations, often preclude traditional mirror, trunk lip, ball, or gutter mounts, necessitating universal mount designs. Discusses the economic challenges of designing vehicle-specific mounts due to tooling costs versus production runs, citing exceptions like Dodge Ram hood mounts and GM truck mirror mount brackets. The article acknowledges the difficulty for manufacturers to recommend specific mounts without direct vehicle inspection, given the vast array of vehicle designs and individual installation restrictions. Advises users with mechanical aptitude to study available mounts and assess possibilities directly on their vehicle. Recommends visiting a local communications store for personalized assistance if self-assessment proves difficult, highlighting the value of expert advice to avoid performance issues or equipment damage.

Examines the Icom IC-2100H 2-meter mobile transceiver, detailing its operational characteristics and user experience. The review highlights the clear, easy-to-read display with internal labels, the button-filled microphone's functionality, and the rig's physical construction, including its weighty heat-sink and lack of a cooling fan. It also discusses memory programming, the unique amber-to-green backlight color options, and the radio's performance against _intermodulation_ in urban environments, noting it performs "pretty darn good" compared to other rigs. The analysis delves into a significant low-voltage cutoff problem, where the microphone ceases to function below approximately **12.6 VDC**, rendering the radio receive-only or causing it to stick in transmit. The author describes testing the voltage cutoff, observing it fluctuate from _12.38 VDC_ to 12.69 VDC. An update from Icom involved a "factory update" to the CPU's control code, which is strongly recommended for early-serial number units to prevent operational failure in low-power emergency scenarios.

A 200 kHz bandwidth digital transmission system for image transfer in the Amateur Service is under development, specifically targeting VHF allocations. John B. Stephensen, KD6OZH, leads this project under an FCC Special Temporary Authority (STA) valid until September 10, 2006, authorizing emissions up to 200 kHz bandwidth in the 50.3-50.8 MHz segment. Current regulations typically limit bandwidths to 20 kHz on VHF amateur bands, making this STA crucial for testing wideband digital modes. The modem, a modified **OFDM** (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed) unit, was initially tested on the 70-cm band. It splits a high-rate data stream into multiple low-rate subcarriers to mitigate multipath echoes. The system uses a DCP-1 card with a Xilinx XC3S400 FPGA and Oki Semiconductor ML67Q5003 microcontroller. The transmitter, located at 36d 46m 30s N, 119d 46m 22s W, generates 150 WPEP into an 8 dBi gain vertical antenna, while the mobile receiver uses a Ham-stick. Three data formats for 50, 100, and 200 kHz channels are being tested, with encoded data rates of 96, 192, and 384 kbps. Verilog code for the VHF OFDM modem is 95% simulated, with modifications from the UHF version including increased filter coefficient precision and a change from Ungerboeck **TCM** to BICM for improved performance over fading paths. Final tests will involve one-way over-the-air measurements of bit error rates and coverage area.
