A GSM1800 Moxon Square antenna project is presented, detailing its construction using three 1.5mm copper wire pieces for the reflector and dipole elements. The design inherently offers a 50-ohm feedpoint impedance, allowing direct connection to 50-ohm coax without complex matching networks like baluns or gamma matches, which are prone to high attenuation at 1.8 GHz if not precisely built. The resource includes a construction plan, expected **SWR plots**, and **radiation patterns** for the GSM 1800 band, specifically covering the 1710-1785 MHz transmit (red zone) and 1805-1880 MHz receive (blue zone) segments. The SWR remains below 2:1 across the entire GSM 1800 band, with the main lobe consistently achieving 5-6 dBi gain. While the radiation pattern shows some changes across the band, these primarily affect the back of the antenna, maintaining consistent forward gain. Practical considerations for high-frequency operation are emphasized, such as minimizing coax length (e.g., under 1 meter for RG-174) and selecting appropriate connectors like N, SMA, or BNC to mitigate significant attenuation. The article also discusses direct connection to the phone's RF PCB for minimal loss and notes observed signal strength variations with antenna orientation despite crossed polarization at cell sites.

Hi-Z Antennas offers specialized high-impedance receiving systems, primarily focusing on phased vertical arrays for HF reception. Their product line includes preamplifiers designed for shortened vertical antennas, featuring optimized 15dB gain and array-matched characteristics. These components are engineered to enhance weak signal reception and improve signal-to-noise ratio across the HF spectrum. The company provides controllers for managing multiple vertical elements in a phased array configuration, enabling directional reception patterns. These systems are particularly effective for mitigating local noise and interference, a common challenge in urban and suburban operating environments. Specific offerings include solutions for 160-meter and 80-meter bands, addressing the unique requirements of low-band DXing. Technical details often reference components like the 2N3866 transistor in preamp designs and discuss concepts such as out-of-band attenuation. The focus remains on optimizing receiving antenna performance through impedance matching and active amplification, rather than transmit capabilities.

Demonstrates the principles of effective HF multi-band antenna systems, emphasizing the use of non-resonant antennas, understanding line attenuation, and the proper application of transmatches and baluns. The resource challenges prevalent amateur radio myths, such as the necessity of a 1:1 SWR at the antenna feedpoint and the misconception that reflected power is lost or damages equipment. It cites authorities like Jim Fisk (Ham Radio Magazine) and M. Walter Maxwell (W2U, QST's "Another Look At Reflections" series) to support its arguments, providing historical context and technical explanations for these long-held beliefs. The article details how to combine non-resonant antennas with appropriate feedlines and matching devices to achieve broad-band operation. It compares coaxial cable losses with those of balanced open-wire lines, illustrating how ladder line can significantly reduce attenuation and handle higher impedances, enabling an 80-meter dipole to operate effectively across multiple HF bands. Practical guidance is offered on transmatch operation, explaining impedance matching principles and debunking the idea that tuners merely "fool" the transmitter. It also clarifies the function and potential misapplication of baluns, particularly transformer-type baluns, in the presence of high SWR.

It operates across 160-10 meters with 100 watts output, incorporating digital filtering, a beat canceller, and 100 memory channels. The radio also includes a transmit equalizer, RX antenna input, and a K1 Logic Keyer, enhancing signal processing and operational flexibility for amateur radio operators. Advanced capabilities include IF stage DSP, dual noise reduction, and an auto notch filter, all contributing to superior signal reception and clarity. The TS-870S offers a variable AGC, voice equalizer, and an RS-232C port for computer control, with Windows™ software supplied. Its built-in automatic antenna tuner functions on all bands for both transmit and receive modes, streamlining station setup and operation. Available accessories such as the DRU-3A digital recording unit, SO-2 high stability crystal oscillator, and VS-2 voice synthesizer option further extend the transceiver's utility. The unit requires 13.8 VDC at 20.5 Amps and is supplied with an MC-43S hand microphone, making it a comprehensive station component.

Demonstrates the fundamental principles for connecting a personal computer to a ham radio transceiver, specifically for utilizing sound card-based digital mode software like those in the MM Hamsoft suite. It details the basic hardware setup, emphasizing the use of shielded leads and proper audio routing from the radio's output to the sound card's input, and from the sound card's output to the radio's microphone or data input. The resource highlights the critical need for transmit attenuation, suggesting a 100:1 voltage divider to prevent overdriving the transmitter's audio stage, and mentions the optional addition of ferrite beads and decoupling capacitors for RFI mitigation. The guide also points to external resources for more detailed pin-outs and interface schematics, such as a specific QSL.net page, and recommends consulting the help files within MM Hamsoft programs for interfacing specifics. It underscores that while the process is straightforward, understanding the audio level management and proper cabling is key to successful operation. The author, VE5KC, provides practical advice drawn from common issues encountered by operators setting up digital mode stations.

The "Shortish Guide to Using an Oscilloscope" elucidates the fundamental operation of oscilloscopes, detailing the purpose and function of vertical, horizontal, and triggering controls. It explains how vertical gain in Volts/cm and horizontal scale in sec/cm enable measurement of signal amplitude and timing, respectively. The resource differentiates between analog and digital scopes, noting that digital scopes often feature "soft" controls and are inherently storage scopes capable of capturing non-repetitive events. The guide dedicates a significant section to the critical role of oscilloscope probes, emphasizing their design to transmit waveforms without distortion or added noise. It explains the concept of a 10x passive scope probe, which reduces circuit loading by a factor of ten and eliminates waveform distortion through probe compensation, typically adjusted using a 1kHz square wave reference output. The document also provides practical advice on probe care and compensation procedures. Further sections address grounding considerations, explaining how a scope measures voltage relative to its chassis ground, which is tied to the protective earth. It offers troubleshooting steps for a blank screen and outlines essential good practices, such as checking input gain and probe attenuation, while explicitly warning against misusing probes or connecting the ground clip to mains voltage.

The 222 MHz Transverter project, based on Zack Lau's (W1VT) original July 1993 QEX magazine design, provides an IF of 28 MHz for both transmit and receive paths. Rick Bandla (VE3CVG) contributed supplemental notes and construction details, including modifications to achieve 10 mW output power from an initial 4 mW PEP. The design incorporates three distinct boards: a Local Oscillator (LO), a Transmitter (Tx), and a Receiver (Rx), with an estimated parts cost of just over $150 CDN, significantly less than commercial kits. Construction involves both through-hole and surface-mount components, with specific guidance on mounting MAV and MAR devices, grounding techniques, and component selection. The project details include parts lists, schematics for the LO, Tx, and Rx, and board layouts. Troubleshooting advice emphasizes sequential testing, starting with the LO, then Tx, and finally Rx, using a 194 MHz and 222.100 MHz capable FM handheld for signal tracing. Further enhancements are discussed, such as an optional Tx driver stage to boost output to 100 mW and the potential modification of a Motorola Maxor 80 PA for 222 MHz SSB/CW operation. The resource also covers practical aspects like power attenuation pads for IF radios (e.g., FT817) and considerations for enclosure design, including repurposing a Maxor 80 case. Performance reports indicate successful 70 km contacts with only 4 mW output.
