Meshtastic: Introduction to Long-Range Off-Grid LoRa Communication
Description
Meshtastic is an open-source, community-driven project that utilizes inexpensive LoRa radios for long-range, off-grid communication. It functions as a decentralized mesh network, allowing users to send and receive text messages without existing communications infrastructure or a phone for mesh communication. Key features include encrypted communication, excellent battery life, and optional GPS-based location services. The system supports long-range communication, with a record of 331km. Unlike ham radio, Meshtastic uses LoRa, which is generally accessible without additional licenses. Radios rebroadcast messages to ensure all group members receive them. A single Meshtastic radio can be paired with one phone at a time for message exchange. The project is open source, with its codebase available on GitHub, and support is volunteer-based.
