Simple Microwave Noise Source Construction for Receiver Testing
Description
This resource details the construction of a simple microwave noise source, utilizing mixer diodes from John Watson, VE3EZP's collection. The methodology involves a basic schematic for a noise generator, designed for go/no-go receiver sensitivity tests and comparative noise figure measurements. The device generates noise levels up to 20 dB above thermal noise, suitable for AM/SSB/CW receivers. It is not calibrated for absolute noise figure measurements. The design incorporates surface-mount components on 1/16 inch FR4 PC board and operates to at least 10 GHz, with an alternative 1N21 diode version functioning up to 5.76 GHz. Any microwave detector diode with a reverse breakdown voltage of a few volts is suitable for this application. The document provides construction details and a schematic for replication.
