2 elements short boom yagi for 80 meters

The HB9ABX RoomCap antenna document details the construction and performance characteristics of a compact HF antenna design. It presents a series of comparative field tests conducted between July and September 2005, evaluating the HB9ABX antenna against established designs like the Microvert MV-500, Cushcraft R5/R7000 verticals, and a 5-element DJ2UT Yagi beam. Specific test scenarios include mobile installations, rooftop deployments, and comparisons on 20m, 40m, 80m, and 160m bands, with signal reports from various European and DX stations. The resource emphasizes the antenna's small physical footprint and its claimed efficiency across multiple HF bands. Test results consistently show the HB9ABX antenna performing comparably to, and often outperforming, larger reference antennas in terms of received signal strength, with reported differences of 1 to 2 S-points (6-12 dB) in many contacts. Notably, a 20m DX test on July 26, 2005, indicated the 1.3m HB9ABX radiator yielded 2-3 S-points stronger signals than an R7000 vertical for US DX stations. An August 12, 2005, test on 40m highlighted the HB9ABX's superior signal-to-noise ratio in urban QRM, demonstrating 10-18 dB better performance than an R7000. The document includes specific callsigns, signal reports, and QTHs for each comparison, providing empirical data for the antenna's performance claims.

Optimizing low-band signal performance for contesting and DXing often involves complex antenna systems. This resource presents the FVR Spitfire Array, a "poor man's 4-square" design specifically engineered for the 80-meter and 160-meter bands. The core content is a PowerPoint presentation originally delivered at the 1998 Dayton Hamvention, outlining the design principles and practical considerations for this phased vertical array. The FVR Spitfire Array aims to provide directional gain and improved signal-to-noise ratio on the lower HF bands without the need for a large, rotatable Yagi. The design focuses on achieving effective directivity and pattern control using vertical elements, a common approach for enhancing receive and transmit capabilities on 160m and 80m, where full-sized Yagis are impractical for many stations. The presentation likely covers construction details, phasing networks, and expected performance characteristics. Further information is provided through an additional FAQ document, addressing common questions and offering clarifications on the array's operation and implementation. This supplementary material helps operators understand nuances of the design and troubleshoot potential issues, making the project more accessible for those looking to build or adapt the FVR Spitfire Array for their own station.

The article describes the iterative tuning process, comparing **NEC model** predictions with actual on-air performance. It emphasizes the importance of precise measurements and adjustments to achieve optimal resonance and impedance matching. The author shares lessons learned from troubleshooting, including the impact of ground system integrity and feedline considerations. Concluding with an antenna checkup, the resource addresses long-term maintenance aspects, including galvanic corrosion prevention and general upkeep for reliable operation.

This article from the July 1976 issue of Radio REF discusses the trend of large antennas for ham radio operators on the low bands. It specifically focuses on a Yagi 2 element antenna for the 80m band, detailing its construction and functionality. The author explains how the antenna can be switched between directing signals towards the West or East using a switch at the station. The article also provides technical details on the lengths of the director and reflector elements, and how they impact the antenna's performance. A useful resource for hams looking to build or understand Yagi antennas for the 80m band.
