A better way to install PL-259 connectors on RG-8X type coax by Dan Richardson, K6MHE

A 37.6-meter Morgain antenna design provides dual-band operation on 80 and 160 meters without traps. The antenna uses 1.5 mm² stranded copper wire with vinyl insulation, commonly found as domestic electrical wire. Tuning involves adjusting lateral jumper wires for the 80-meter band, with initial positions 30 cm from the arm ends, yielding 3635–3715 kHz resonance with SWR below 1.5:1. For 160 meters, a straight wire length of 18.80 meters per arm is critical, achieving 1840–1850 kHz resonance with SWR below 1.1:1. The Morgain antenna exhibits a 50-ohm feed-point impedance, allowing direct connection of 50-ohm coaxial cable like RG-8X, which handles approximately 500 watts. Spacers and the central plate are constructed from 1 mm thick green fiberglass laminate, with spacers measuring 11 cm and installed every 1.90 meters. The central plate is 11 × 11 cm, designed to secure the coaxial cable mechanically. End supports utilize 3–6 mm thick bakelite terminal spacers, tensioned with nylon ropes.

Presents the construction of a 6-meter (50 MHz) Moxon wire beam antenna, detailing the use of #14 AWG THNN stranded wire and a treated wood frame. It covers the assembly of a galvanized pipe mast, emphasizing the use of pipe sleeves for joint reinforcement over threaded couplers to prevent breakage during raising and lowering operations. The resource also describes the integration of a 1:1 current balun, rated for 50-54 MHz, and the use of RG-8X coax for the transmission line, recommending low-loss alternatives like Belden 9913-7F. Further, it outlines a manual rotation mechanism using pipe hanger clamps and carriage bolts for true North orientation, incorporating magnetic declination calculations from NOAA. The antenna's performance is discussed, noting good gain and take-off angle, with SWR tuning facilitated by a Palstar AT-500 manual tuner. An EZNEC+ 5.054 model for the antenna is available for download, alongside predicted radiation patterns and SWR curves, compared with actual AIM-4170C measurements.

The resource provides coaxial cable attenuation data, listing signal loss in dB per 100 feet for various cable types across a frequency range from 1 MHz to 5.8 GHz. The initial table details attenuation for cables such as _RG-58_, _RG-8X_, and RG-213, with impedance values of 50 ohm or 75 ohm, at frequencies up to 1 GHz. For example, _RG-58_ exhibits **0.4 dB** loss at 1 MHz and **21.5 dB** loss at 1 GHz per 100 feet. A subsequent table expands on this data, including LMR series cables like _LMR-400_ and LMR-600, along with other types such as 9913F7 and RG214. This section covers frequencies from 30 MHz to 1,500 MHz, also noting the outer diameter of each cable. For instance, _LMR-400_ (0.405" diameter) shows **0.7 dB** loss at 30 MHz and 5.1 dB loss at 1,500 MHz per 100 feet. The final section focuses on VHF/UHF/Microwave amateur and ISM bands, presenting attenuation in dB per 100 feet (and meters) for frequencies including 144 MHz, 450 MHz, and 2.4 GHz. This table includes larger diameter hardline options like 1/2" LDF and 7/8" LDF, in addition to flexible coaxial cables. For example, 1/2" LDF cable demonstrates **0.85 dB** loss at 144 MHz and 6.6 dB loss at 2.4 GHz per 100 feet. DXZone Focus: Coaxial cable attenuation | LMR-400 | RG-58 | 5.8 GHz

Coaxial cable stripping for PL-259 connectors requires precise measurements to ensure optimal RF performance and mechanical integrity. For RG-8X, the outer jacket is stripped 1/2 inch, the braid 5/16 inch, and the dielectric 1/8 inch, leaving the center conductor exposed. RG-58 preparation involves a 1/2 inch jacket strip, 1/4 inch braid strip, and 1/8 inch dielectric strip. These specific dimensions facilitate proper soldering and crimping, minimizing impedance discontinuities at the connector interface. Different coaxial cable types, such as RG-8 and RG-213, necessitate varied stripping lengths due to their construction. The _PL-259_ connector, a common UHF type, relies on these exact preparations for a secure fit and low-loss connection. Incorrect stripping can lead to high SWR, RF leakage, and mechanical failure, impacting overall station efficiency. The guide details these critical dimensions for several popular coax cables. Using a dedicated _coax stripper_ tool or precise measurements with a utility knife improves consistency.

A common mode choke/balun, essential for mitigating common mode current on antenna feedlines, is detailed in this construction and measurement guide. It utilizes eight Fair-Rite #2643167851 Mix 43 ferrites housed within a Hammond 1598JSGYPBK plastic case, with RG-8X coax cable forming the windings. The document references design principles from Ian White, GM3SEK's article on cost-effective ferrite chokes. Specific construction details include the layout of three coils to minimize inter-coil coupling and methods for securing the ferrites with foam tape. The resource presents comprehensive measured data, including isolation impedance (magnitude, real, and imaginary components), Q factor, inductance, and phase angle across various frequencies. It also covers the choke/balun's coax frequency response and return loss characteristics. Techniques for measuring choking impedance are thoroughly explained, focusing on S21 transmission measurements with a Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) and testing ferrite beads in both S11 and S21 modes. The guide describes a practical setup using an aluminum sheet or baking foil for measurements and outlines the calculation of series impedance from attenuation in a 50-ohm system. Additionally, it details a method for determining the balun's equivalent L and C around resonance by adding a parallel capacitor.
