The JACK Audio Connection Kit provides a robust, cross-platform solution for routing audio and MIDI data between various software applications with minimal latency. It addresses the common challenge of directing the output of one program, such as a digital mode decoder or SDR application, into the input of another, like a logging program or audio recorder. Jack audio is a multi platform application, runs on Linux, Windows and MacOS. This virtual audio cable functionality allows for complex signal flows, enabling users to simultaneously send audio from a single source to multiple destinations and even loop it back for recording or further processing within the same or different applications. For amateur radio operators, JACK facilitates advanced configurations for digital modes, contesting, and signal analysis. It supports intricate setups where a single radio's audio output can feed multiple decoders, spectrum analyzers, or recording utilities concurrently. The API is designed for real-time performance, crucial for applications requiring precise timing and minimal delay in audio processing.

The Elecraft K2 transceiver requires specific modifications for optimal soundcard digital mode operation, particularly for PSK31. The original article, circa 2001, details initial challenges with manual PTT and speech compression settings. A key modification involves adding headphone audio and a compression disable signal to the K2's microphone jack, utilizing pins 4 and 5. The **COMP0** signal, active low, is shorted to ground via a non-inverting open collector switch circuit, comprising two resistors and two transistors, mounted on the SSB board near U3. This circuit provides effective control of an analog signal line with good noise immunity. The switchbox itself repurposes a computer COM port switch, using only two of its original connectors and four of the nine poles. It integrates a microphone preamplifier, a PTT circuit built with 'flying leads' construction, and RCA jacks for soundcard connections. A trimpot adjusts the audio drive to the K2. The central DB9 connector links to the K2's mic connector via a shielded RS232 serial cable, ensuring proper grounding and signal routing. An external footswitch PTT jack is also included. Further enhancements include a **noise-canceling microphone** preamp based on a QST December 2000 article, adapted for Heil mic elements. This preamp, built with pseudo-Manhattan style construction, provides a gain of approximately 2 by changing emitter resistors (R9 and R16) from 680 ohms to 330 ohms. A 10-ohm series resistor and 47 µF capacitor on the +5V supply mitigate noise spikes.

Demonstrates the fundamental principles for connecting a personal computer to a ham radio transceiver, specifically for utilizing sound card-based digital mode software like those in the MM Hamsoft suite. It details the basic hardware setup, emphasizing the use of shielded leads and proper audio routing from the radio's output to the sound card's input, and from the sound card's output to the radio's microphone or data input. The resource highlights the critical need for transmit attenuation, suggesting a 100:1 voltage divider to prevent overdriving the transmitter's audio stage, and mentions the optional addition of ferrite beads and decoupling capacitors for RFI mitigation. The guide also points to external resources for more detailed pin-outs and interface schematics, such as a specific QSL.net page, and recommends consulting the help files within MM Hamsoft programs for interfacing specifics. It underscores that while the process is straightforward, understanding the audio level management and proper cabling is key to successful operation. The author, VE5KC, provides practical advice drawn from common issues encountered by operators setting up digital mode stations.

This online project documentation details the construction of a hands-free microphone interface unit designed for _mobile_ amateur radio operation. The curriculum covers the integration of electret microphone elements with amateur radio transceivers, specifically addressing **VHF** band communication. It outlines the circuitry for a switch box that provides an interface between various radio models and microphone types. The guide specifies the inclusion of a **1750 Hz** tone-burst generator for accessing amateur radio repeaters, an operational protocol for many VHF systems. Design considerations include the reduction of ambient vehicle noise through an adjustable audio input level control. The project provides schematics and wiring diagrams for connecting the interface unit to specific amateur radio transceivers, including the Yaesu FT-817. It addresses the selection and adaptation of readily available electret microphone and earpiece assemblies, initially sourced from mobile phone accessories, and later from dedicated headset units. The design incorporates a control mechanism for radio functions, enabling hands-free operation during _mobile_ excursions. Circuit details cover power supply considerations for the electret microphone and signal routing for both transmit audio and received audio monitoring. The documentation specifies component selection for the switch box, ensuring compatibility with common amateur radio microphone input impedances and output levels. This includes considerations for PTT line switching and audio path isolation. SWLTools, an iOS application for iPhone and iPad running iOS 17+, provides real-time decoding of various digital modes. It automatically locks onto CW tones, measures sending speed, and collects callsigns, distinguishing valid entries from misreads for a reliable log. For RTTY and SITOR-B, the app allows users to set shift and speed, then automatically tunes to the two tones for text reception, supporting marine bulletins, press agencies, and NAVTEX. The application also decodes WEFAX, building charts line by line for direct saving to the photo library, and processes ACARS aircraft messages, including CRC checks for data integrity and mapping of position reports. Beyond decoding, SWLTools integrates a GPU-accelerated FFT spectrum analyzer, a scrolling waterfall display with frequency cursors, and an adjustable FIR bandpass filter to isolate signals. It supports IQ signal analysis from receivers via two-channel audio interfaces, correcting mirror images. Flexible audio input options include the built-in microphone, USB audio dongles, and Bluetooth sources, with diagnostics for audio routing and buffer status. The app records audio, plays it back, and converts recordings into shareable videos, while decoded texts and charts are also savable and shareable, with all timestamps in UTC.
