Understanding antenna gain is crucial for optimizing an amateur radio station's performance, particularly when evaluating shortened or compromised antenna designs. This resource provides a simplified explanation of antenna gain, focusing on the concept of _capture area_ to demystify the often-complex mathematical formulas found in antenna theory texts. It contrasts full-size dipoles with shortened versions, illustrating how physical length directly impacts an antenna's ability to intercept or radiate RF energy. The article presents practical examples, such as a 20m dipole with **0 dB/d** gain and a shortened 20m antenna exhibiting **-6 dB** less gain due to reduced capture area. It further details the significant efficiency losses in various shortened ground plane antennas for 40m and 160m, showing how a 40m center-loaded ground plane might only radiate **7%** of input power. These comparisons highlight the trade-offs involved in using physically small antennas and underscore the importance of minimizing coil losses for effective operation.

This resource presents a detailed analysis of the W6NL 2-element 40-meter **Moxon Yagi** antenna, covering its design, construction, and measured performance characteristics. It outlines key specifications such as a free-space gain of 6 dBi, 11 dBi at 70 feet, and a direct 50-ohm feed. The document highlights the antenna's physical attributes, including 52-foot elements, a 27-foot boom, and a weight of 75 pounds, engineered to withstand 125 mph winds. Modeling was performed using **AO6** and K6STI software, with a focus on the unique functions of the transverse tip elements for Moxon coupling, physical balance, efficient capacitive loading, and reduced wind load. The presentation includes comparative data, showing the Moxon's superior front-to-back (F/B) ratio and wider bandwidth compared to traditional loaded Yagis. Performance graphs illustrate the SWR, gain, and F/B across the entire 40-meter band (7.0-7.3 MHz), comparing measured results against calculated values. Azimuth and elevation patterns demonstrate high F/B, with the antenna's pattern matching that of a full-size 3-element Yagi on a 30-foot boom. It also notes a gain difference of 1.5 dB down relative to a K3LR 4-element Yagi on a 50-foot boom, providing practical benchmarks for performance evaluation.

VE3NEA presents a detailed account of designing and constructing a **helical filter** specifically for 144 MHz satellite reception, addressing severe SDR receiver overloading from nearby Land Mobile Radio Network signals between 141 MHz and 143 MHz. The author's experience with RTL-SDR, RSP1a, and Airspy Mini receivers demonstrated the necessity of a narrowband solution to enable reception in the 145.8-146 MHz range with only 3 MHz separation from strong interference. The resource delves into the theoretical underpinnings of helical resonators, drawing upon Anatol I. Zverev's "Handbook of filter synthesis." It explains the equivalent circuit of a two-resonator passband filter, highlighting the critical role of stray capacitance (C3) in determining the coupling coefficient (K) and emphasizing the importance of **critical coupling** (K=1) for optimal filter performance. Misconceptions regarding tap positions and impedance transformation are clarified, with tap placement shown to control resonator loading and the trade-off between bandwidth and losses. Construction details include sourcing materials like 1/4" copper tubing and PCB, precise assembly techniques, and the use of tuning screws for frequency and coupling adjustments. Measurements performed with a NanoVNA revealed discrepancies from initial Coil64 calculations, necessitating adjustments to helix turns and tap positions to achieve the desired 3.5 dB passband loss and 40-50 dB suppression of interference.

You can shorten a vertical antenna by using a loading coil. This online calculator tells you how the amout of inductance your loading coil will need to have.

A 60-foot available space, for example, might necessitate a shortened multiband dipole array to cover 80, 40, and 15 meters effectively. This resource details the construction of such an antenna, combining full-size and coil-loaded dipoles on a single feedline. It addresses the common challenge of fitting multiple HF bands into restricted physical footprints, providing practical guidance for hams with smaller backyards or portable operations. The core of the offering is an interactive calculator that determines required loading coil inductance and dipole lengths for various amateur bands from 160m to 10m. Users input their available space, and the tool provides dimensions, coil turns, and an efficiency rating (Good or Fair) based on the antenna's electrical length relative to a quarter-wavelength. It also suggests suitable _PVC_ pipe diameters for coil forms. The article further illustrates a center feed-point assembly using an 18-inch section of 2-inch _PVC_ pipe, detailing eye-bolt spacing and coaxial connector installation. It emphasizes the importance of adequate spacing between parallel dipoles and offers customization options for the feed-point, including the addition of a _Balun_ for improved feedline isolation.
