The latest update, dated April 3, 2026, includes corrections for magnitude values and various speed and stability optimizations.

This resource, a blog from the Penang Amateur Radio Club (PARC), offers insights into various aspects of amateur radio in Malaysia. One post details monitoring Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS) on the 2m band, providing specific frequencies like 122.750 MHz AM for Butterworth and 126.400 MHz AM for Penang, along with sample aviation weather and operational data. Another entry critiques the lengthy and costly process of obtaining an amateur radio license in Malaysia, contrasting it with the more streamlined FCC licensing system in the United States, citing a 1-year wait and RM 414 (USD 125) for 10 years in Malaysia versus 3 weeks and USD 14 for 10 years in the US. The blog also covers internal club matters, such as the 2007 Annual General Meeting (AGM) attendance and council elections, highlighting member dissatisfaction with outdated newsletters and a call for "reformasi." Additionally, it presents local phonetic alphabets in Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese, and discusses monitoring AM broadcast bands for international stations like Voice of America on 1575 kHz and Zhong Yang Ren Min Guang Bo Dian Tai on 1134 kHz, offering alternatives to local 2m repeater chatter. The author, "firstclass," shares personal observations and criticisms regarding the Malaysian ham radio landscape.

The International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend (ILLW) is an annual amateur radio operating event, typically held on the third full weekend in August, spanning **48 hours**. Originating in 1998 as the _Scottish Northern Lights Award_ by the Ayr Amateur Radio Group, the ILLW has evolved into a major international event. It encourages amateur radio operators to activate stations from lighthouses and lightships worldwide, fostering contacts and promoting maritime heritage. The event is characterized by its minimal rules, making it accessible and enjoyable for participants without the competitive pressure of traditional contests. Over 500 lighthouse entries from more than **40 countries** participate annually, contributing to August becoming recognized as "Lighthouse Month" within the amateur radio community. Unlike typical contests, the ILLW emphasizes participation and enjoyment over scoring or prizes for high contact counts. The site provides registration forms, entrant lists for upcoming years like 2026 and 2027, and reports from previous events, alongside historical context for the ILLW and related lighthouse activities such as the US National Lighthouse Week and the International Lighthouse Heritage Weekend.

Presented is a historical collection of short-wave listening (SWL) QSL cards, primarily from the late 1930s and early 1940s, offering a glimpse into early international broadcasting and the technical pursuits of SWL operators like Les Miles during that era. The resource showcases specific QSLs from stations such as _Broadcasting Corporation of Japan_, _XGOY - The Central Broadcasting Administration_ in Chungking, China, and _Australian broadcasting ship, Kanimbla VK9MI_, each with reception dates and frequencies like 11.90MHz or 9.525MHz. It highlights the self-sufficiency of SWL enthusiasts who constructed and maintained their own radio and test equipment, evoking the sensory experience of vintage valve receivers. The collection provides concrete examples of international broadcast stations active before and during World War II, including _2RO3 - Rome_ and _WRUL - World Wide Broadcasting Foundation_ from Boston. Each QSL entry details the station, location, reception date, and often the frequency, such as 9.63MHz or 11.26MHz, allowing for historical verification of broadcast schedules. The resource also briefly mentions the operational details of the _VK9MI_ offshore radio station, directing readers to further information on its history. This compilation serves as a tangible record of global radio communication during a pivotal historical period.

The Spartan Sprint Special 40m CW Transceiver, originally documented in 2002 and reproduced in 2019, details a **QRP** direct conversion rig designed for portable operation. This project evolved from an experimental CMOS digital IC receiver, which proved too noisy for weak signals, into a dedicated 40-meter CW transceiver. The author, VE3SMA, aimed for reduced size, lower weight, and decreased receive current drain compared to earlier iterations, drawing on his extensive contesting experience and even his time operating million-watt transmitters at Radio Canada International. This compact transceiver delivers approximately 200 mW output, VFO-tunable over 15 kHz within the 40m band, and weighs a mere 73 grams (0.16 lb) including its balsa wood case. It features fast semi-break-in and sidetone, with a receive current draw of about 14 mA (no signal) and transmit current draw around 125 mA key down. The design incorporates various construction techniques, including knife-cut surface mount boards and through-hole components, often salvaged from junked cordless phones and cellphones. Despite its direct conversion architecture, which offers usable but not superheterodyne-level selectivity, the rig proved effective, achieving a fourth-place finish in a June 2001 Spartan Sprint contest when paired with a 26-foot vertical antenna. The article provides comprehensive circuit details, including an unconventional VFO using a high-speed CMOS inverter chip and a balanced mixer utilizing a 74HC4053.
