Kenwood announce the imminent release in the market of a new version of the two-years old TS-590S, HF/50 MHz transceiver.
The new release will be named TS-590SG.
This new version offer some new features like a 500 Hz/2.7 kHz Roofing Filter as standard, Advanced AGC control through digital signal processing from the IF stage onward, CW decoder function visible on the display and via PC, and other features available as Firmware upgrade to TS-590S version owners too.
Estetically, looks like no changes from the 590S have been made.

Icom unvealed the new special edition top-class transceiver, at the Tokyo HamFair 2014.
Created on the base of IC-7800 the new IC-7850 will be very similar to Icom’s top of the range transceiver IC-7800.
However interface and platform, parts of the logic sections and I/O interfaces and RF circuitry have been improved.
In particular the receive circuit is has been redesigned to be the best industry class 1st LO phase noise performance with a 20dB improvement over the IC-7800.
Basically, externally the radio boasts gold colour dials, buttons and side strips, the front panel is made witha a very clear piano black, all models carries a special 50th Anniversary serial-number, and a plaque with on top with Mr Inoue’s signature.

It’s Arduino time !
[quote_center]Arduino is the new game with which many homebrewers are playing nowdays.[/quote_center]
Basically Arduino is an integrated computer on a chip, placed in a simple circuit board.
This small microcontroller can be easily used to develop interactive tools, by taking inputs from a variety of sensors or switches, and by permitting to control a variety of lights, motors, and other devices.
Several different projects has been realized to assist ham radio operations, including SWR meters, Antenna Analyzers, Software oscilloscopes, TNC, CW Keyers and more.

According to the CQ OHM blog site, Yaesu will stop production of the popular quadriband transceiver FT-897D in June 2014.
The transceiver presented in 2002 has quicky gained the popularity thanks to the possibility to operate in HF , 6 Meters, VHF and UHF bands. Similar to the FT-897 the japanese company released also the FT-857 and the QRP vertion FT-817.

We have now a new section dedicated to the new emerging trends of ham radio homebewing and experimenting…. the Raspberry Pi Ham Radio Projects.
According to the Raspberrypi.org web site [quote_box_left]The Raspberry Pi is a low cost, credit-card sized computer that plugs into a computer monitor or TV, and uses a standard keyboard and mouse[/quote_box_left]
We selected a good number of ready-to-play ham radio projects in the web that can inspire you some more ideas to develop with this small personal computer.
Some interesting projects includes , an APRS iGate with Raspberry-Pi, an IRLP Node or a SSTV Slow Scan TeleVision transmitter made with a Raspberry Pi.
These are just some of the projects some hams have published on the internet made using this small PC.
If you want to know more about the Raspberri Pi you can visit the official web site
We have just setup a new category in our main index.
The YL Young Ladies Amateur Radio Clubs that represent a list of links to amateur radio clubs dedicated to the promotion of ham radio among women.
The origin of YL term:
Typically YL is a ham radio term for a girl friend (Young Lady), while a Wife would be a XYL
“Many OMs have used XYL (meaning Ex-Young Lady) to describe a wife versus a single lady, but some women, though not all, take offense at this term feeling that getting married does not mean a female is no longer a Young Lady.”
You may read a more detailed and exaustive article on origin of these terms at the YLRL history page, where you can learn how the term was born and how it has assumed the nowdays meaning.
