This study details a reception comparison between vertical and horizontal active loop antennas, specifically two identical _Wellgood active loop antennas_, on various HF bands. The experiment, conducted in a densely populated QRM-prone area, monitored FT8 signals over a 24-hour period using two identical receivers. The methodology involved direct comparison of signal reception across the HF spectrum, aiming to identify performance differences based on antenna orientation. The results indicate that vertical loops demonstrated superior performance on higher bands (10m, 15m, 20m), while horizontal loops excelled on lower bands (30m, 40m, 160m), particularly for receiving long-distance (DX) signals. The horizontal loop's advantage on lower bands is attributed to potentially better low-angle performance and reduced sensitivity to man-made noise, yielding a **2-3 S-unit** improvement on 160m. The study provides practical insights for optimizing antenna placement in challenging urban environments, noting that the horizontal loop consistently showed a **10-15 dB** signal-to-noise ratio improvement on lower bands.

The author's experience with low-power transmissions and WSPR testing highlights the band's capabilities and the need for a narrow, speech-free amateur allocation to encourage experimentation. Discover the world of 8m ISM radio exploration and its future possibilities.

Single Sideband (SSB) operation requires careful attention to the relationship between a radio's displayed frequency (suppressed carrier) and the actual 3 kHz wide audio signal. This resource clarifies how Upper Sideband (USB) and Lower Sideband (LSB) signals occupy spectrum above or below the indicated frequency, respectively. It provides practical examples for General Class operators on the **20m** and **40m** bands, such as setting a VFO to 14.226 MHz for USB on 20m or 7.178 MHz for LSB on 40m, to maintain a safe margin from band edges. The resource emphasizes the critical importance of staying within allocated band limits to prevent out-of-band emissions, particularly when operating close to band edges. It includes relevant excerpts from **FCC Regulation Part 97**, specifically section 97.307, which details emission standards, necessary bandwidth, and spurious emission attenuation requirements. The text explains that unused sidebands are considered spurious emissions and notes that modern HF equipment typically exceeds the 43 dB spurious emission reduction standard, often achieving 60 dB or more.

During radio's early days, high frequencies were under 30 MHz due to technical limitations. As understanding grew, components improved, allowing for higher frequencies like VHF and UHF up to 3 GHz. The HF band's long wavelengths provide unique propagation challenges influenced by solar activity. VHF and UHF bands face diffraction and reflection issues but offer diverse applications, from amateur radio to 5G and GPS technologies.

VE2AZX's 2013 Radio Talk presentation details the technical aspects of baluns, including reasons for their use, various types, and methods for performance verification using an SWR analyzer. The document specifically examines 1:1 voltage baluns and 4:1 voltage baluns, outlining their winding configurations and typical impedance transformations. It presents empirical SWR measurements for W2AU 1:1 baluns and Unadilla 4:1 baluns, tested with both 50-ohm and 200-ohm resistive loads across the HF spectrum. The presentation further explores the measurement of ferrite impedance and their application in mitigating common-mode currents on feeders and household conductors. Key concepts addressed include balanced-to-unbalanced transformation, ensuring feeder independence from the antenna, and reducing unwanted feeder radiation. The content emphasizes practical testing procedures to ensure optimal antenna system performance and minimize RF interference. Discussions also cover open-circuit tests with SWR analyzers and VNAs to assess winding inductance, distributed capacitance, and insulation quality. The presentation differentiates between voltage and current baluns, explaining how current baluns, particularly those utilizing ferrite cores, reduce outer shield currents without affecting internal coaxial cable currents, thereby preserving the antenna's intended radiation pattern.

The author discusses ways to display VHF and higher bands using a K3/10 as  transverter, NooElec Upconverter, SDR, and SDR-Console. He observed that the results were remarkable, with the tuned frequency visible at +/-100kHz. The K3 Interface Option (KXV3A) produces a buffered IF output at 8.213MHz, which is received using a NooElec NESDR SMArt SDR dongle and Ham It UP Upconverter. The SDR-Console program is utilized, with Omnirig synchronizing the SDR and K3. To configure the system, particular parameters are required, such as adjusting the IF frequency to 133.213MHz (125MHz + IF frequency) and inverting the spectrum. The Panadapter demonstrated ES activity at 10m, and modest software tweaks may be required for improved performance.
