Over 40 years of experience inform the reviews and commentary presented on Dave's Radio Receiver Page, covering a wide array of radio receivers and transceivers. The resource details specific models such as the **ICOM IC-R8600** SDR Communications Receiver, which is lauded as Icom's best wide-band receiver, even surpassing the IC-R9500 in performance. Other notable reviews include the ICOM IC-7300 HF Transceiver, highlighting its direct sampling SDR technology and spectrum scope capabilities, alongside numerous models from Japan Radio Co. (JRC), Kenwood, Yaesu, and various portable shortwave receivers. The content provides practical insights into the performance and characteristics of each radio, often drawing comparisons between models. For instance, the early issues with the AOR AR7030 receiver's Bourns mechanical encoders are thoroughly documented, including AOR's eventual switch to higher-quality Alps encoders. The page also features reviews of antennas like the MFJ-1026 Noise Canceling Signal Enhancer and various power supplies, offering a holistic view of radio monitoring setups. The author's "2 ear / 2 eye method" emphasizes real-world listening experiences over laboratory measurements, providing a unique perspective on equipment utility.

The Elecraft K3, a popular HF transceiver, is often benchmarked against new market entrants. This article critically compares the Kenwood TS-590S to the K3, focusing on key technical specifications and operational aspects relevant to serious amateur radio operators. The author proposes three distinct evaluation methods: a circuit diagram comparison, an independent review analysis (referencing Peter Hart, G3SJX, in RadCom), and a real-world "ear test" by experienced contest operators on 40 and 80 meters. The analysis delves into specific receiver components, including the first mixer design, RF and IF amplifier performance, and the presence of an image noise filter. It highlights the K3's switched mixer and the potential for the TS-590S to utilize similar or improved designs, such as a classic filter with enhanced selectivity. The article also scrutinizes the second mixer stage, noting the K3's SA612 chip and its associated IP3 limitations, suggesting Kenwood might achieve benefits with a different mixer architecture. Further points of comparison include DSP capabilities, where the K3's high-performing DSP with KK7P's involvement is noted against the TS-590S's potential reliance on newer IC technology but possibly less refined software. The discussion extends to DDS and PLL implementations for phase noise and spurious emissions, and the utility of a second receiver for DX chasing and contesting, acknowledging its importance for some operators while being less critical for others. The article concludes by emphasizing personal preference in equipment selection.

The **70cm Moxon Beam** project outlines the construction and testing of a compact, directional antenna for the 432 MHz band. G3XBM recounts his early 1980s experience with a 4W FM321 transceiver and a Jaybeam 48-element TV antenna, which provided a baseline for his later UHF antenna experiments. This project focuses on a simpler, yet effective, design for local and regional contacts, emphasizing ease of construction and practical field results over complex theory. The article details the specific dimensions and materials used for the Moxon rectangle, including 6mm diameter aluminum tubing for the elements and a PVC boom. G3XBM notes that the antenna was built for portable use, making it lightweight and easily deployable for field operations. The feedpoint impedance was measured at 50 ohms, ensuring a direct match without the need for an external tuner, which simplifies setup. Performance tests included comparisons against a commercial 5-element Yagi, revealing that the Moxon provided comparable forward gain and an excellent front-to-back ratio, crucial for reducing local QRM. The author's observations confirm the Moxon's reputation as a robust performer for its size, suitable for both fixed and portable 70cm operations.

A Magnetic Loop Controller project details the construction and operation of an automatic tuning system for magnetic loop antennas, which are resonant circuits using an oversized inductor and an adjustable capacitor. The system employs a stepper motor to precisely adjust the variable capacitor, maintaining optimal resonance across the HF bands. It integrates with various transceivers, including _Icom_, _Kenwood_, and _Yaesu_ models, by monitoring the VFO frequency and adjusting the loop's tuning accordingly. The project provides comprehensive building instructions, a PowerPoint-style presentation, and the full source code for the controller's firmware, enabling hams to replicate and customize the design. The controller's firmware offers diverse functionality, including automatic frequency tracking, manual tuning, and SWR monitoring, significantly enhancing the operational efficiency of magnetic loop antennas, particularly for QRP and portable operations. The design emphasizes accurate capacitor positioning, crucial for achieving low SWR and maximum radiated power. Comparisons with manual tuning methods highlight the benefits of real-time adjustment, especially when operating across different bands or making frequent QSYs. The project's detailed documentation and available source code facilitate experimentation and modification by advanced builders, allowing for tailored performance characteristics.

In this article, the current consumption for a selection of popular HF transceiver was examined to determine, via an on the field comparison, whether they were right for portable operation. The radios evaluated include the Yaesu FT-857D, Kenwood TS-590SG, Icom IC-7100, and Kenwood TS-480SAT. The measurements were taken beginning frok 5W in 5W increments up to 100W. The results showed that the Kenwood TS-590SG had the highest current use while the Yaesu FT-857D had the lowest. The current consumption of all radios increased as the power output increased.

This resource presents the design and characteristics of the K9AY Terminated Loop, a compact directional receiving antenna system. The document details the antenna's physical and electrical configuration, consisting of a wire loop, a 9:1 impedance-matching transformer, and a terminating resistor. It describes how the antenna achieves directionality, favoring signals from the feed point end and rejecting signals from the terminating resistor end by several S units. The system is designed for low-band operation, specifically mentioning its application for improving reception on bands where space is a constraint. A four-direction system, utilizing two loops oriented at right angles with a relay-controlled switching system, is discussed. The resource includes a comparison of the K9AY loop's footprint to that of an equivalent EWE array, indicating the K9AY system requires approximately 1/7 the area while maintaining similar directional patterns. The design prioritizes signal collection sufficient for use with modest preamps, such as those integrated into HF transceivers. The article was originally published in QST in 1997.
