The HB9ABX mobile HF antenna, developed by _Felix Meyer_, offers a high-performance alternative to commercial mobile antennas for 80 through 10 meters. Constructed from fiberglass rods and enamelled copper wire, this design incorporates a loading coil with multiple taps, allowing for band-specific tuning. The article provides detailed instructions for winding the coil, connecting the antenna elements, and integrating it with a vehicle's chassis ground. Field tests conducted at 100W consistently showed the HB9ABX antenna outperforming a HUSTLER mobile antenna by up to **10 dB** (1 S-point) and a YAESU ATAS-100/120 by **18 dB** (2-4 S-points) across distances from 5 km to 1000 km. The design emphasizes a robust ground connection and the use of an antenna tuner, such as an _MFJ-901B_, for optimal SWR on all bands, particularly 40 and 80 meters. Initial adjustment involves setting whip length and coil tap positions to achieve resonance without a tuner, followed by fine-tuning with the tuner during operation. Specific measurements are provided for checking resonance on 21.0 MHz and 14.2 MHz, with precise turn counts for the lower (79 turns) and upper (120 turns) antenna sections. Safety precautions for handling fiberglass dust are also highlighted.

Demonstrates a **shunt-feed** matching technique for Hustler mobile HF antennas, specifically the MO-3 mast with RM series resonators, to achieve optimal **SWR** on the 40-meter and 20-meter bands. It details the construction of a loading coil using 20 turns of #12 solid wire, 1.25-inch ID, spread to 5 inches, and provides tap points: 8 turns for 40m and 4 turns for 20m, connecting one end to the feed point and the other to ground. The resource presents specific SWR results, noting a 1:1 match at 7.258 MHz on 40m and 14.275 MHz on 20m, with SWR remaining below 1.5:1 across significant portions of the General phone segments. It highlights a noticeable improvement in both transmit and receive performance compared to a straight antenna setup, emphasizing the practical application of this matching method for mobile installations, particularly on a fender-mounted ball mount.

The ARRL page, titled "The HF Mobile Antenna," serves as a curated index to various _QST_ articles focusing on constructing mobile HF antennas. It presents several projects for the mechanically inclined amateur, suggesting that homebrewed antennas can achieve efficiency comparable to commercial versions. For instance, one entry details a **five-band** antenna for RVs, utilizing a fold-over Hustler 4BTV, while another describes a "Bug Catcher" design for 80 through 10 meters. Further projects include a budget-friendly $20 HF mobile antenna made from PVC and wire, covering 20 through 6 meters, and the "Alpha Special," a multiband horizontal antenna originally for 1960s station wagons, now suggested for mini-vans. The resource also addresses antenna mounting solutions specifically for travel trailers and campers, providing practical insights for those operating from recreational vehicles. Rounding out the collection are the "Connecticut Longhorn," a 75-meter horizontal whip with remote tuning, and its redesign, the "Connecticut Shorthorn," adapted for smaller vehicles post-1970s. This compilation offers a historical perspective on mobile antenna innovation and practical construction guides for various HF bands and vehicle types.

A vertical dipole for 10, 15, 20 and 40 meters made adapting two Hustler Model 6-BTV antennas by w6sdo

The resource details the construction of a **Hustler-compatible** HF mobile antenna mast, utilizing 1/2-inch copper water pipe and common hardware. It provides a bill of materials, specifying one 10-foot copper pipe, four 1/2-inch copper end caps, and 3/8-inch fine-thread hex bolts and nuts, totaling $8.75 for two masts. The construction process outlines preparing bolts by rounding their heads, drilling 3/8-inch holes in end caps, soldering bolts into caps, and then soldering these cap/bolt assemblies to 5-foot sections of copper pipe to achieve a final length of 54-1/4 inches per mast. The method emphasizes precise soldering techniques to ensure structural integrity and proper fit. The resulting masts are presented as functional alternatives to commercial units, with the author noting their performance is comparable to the "real thing." Installation tips are provided, including the use of braces connected to a trunk lid to mitigate stress on the antenna mount, contrasting this approach with WA8WTE's spring-based method. Photos illustrate the completed mast mounted on a vehicle, demonstrating practical application and support strategies for mobile HF operation, particularly with larger coils and longer whips at highway speeds.

Installing a mobile rig in a vehicle requires careful planning and execution to ensure optimal performance and safety. The process begins with selecting the right equipment, such as the ICOM IC706MKII for low bands and the ALINCO DR-610 for VHF/UHF operations. Proper mounting is crucial; both radios are strategically placed under the back seat of the Silverado, allowing for a clean installation while maintaining passenger comfort. The Hustler antenna, equipped with various resonators, ensures coverage across multiple bands, while the LDG automatic antenna tuner fine-tunes the match for efficient operation. A remote head for the tuner enhances accessibility, making adjustments easier while driving. Each step of the installation is documented to provide insights and tips for fellow operators looking to enhance their mobile setup. The experience shared here reflects practical knowledge gained through hands-on work, aiming to inspire others in the ham community to undertake similar projects.

The _G3TSO_ Mobile Antenna Page details construction and tuning methods for mobile antennas operating across **10 to 160 metres**. The content describes a Hustler-based design, optimized for RF performance and vehicle speeds, featuring centre loading. For optimal operation on various bands, the loading coil placement requires clearance from the vehicle body. Antenna resonance is critical for efficient mobile operation. A mobile antenna's base impedance may be as low as 27 ohms, requiring specific matching to achieve maximum radiation, as a minimum SWR at the transmitter does not always indicate resonance or maximum output. Tuning involves physical adjustment of antenna length to achieve resonance at the operating frequency. The _G3TSO_ page outlines a tuning procedure utilizing a low-power signal source and a field strength meter to identify maximum radiation before impedance matching. Loading coil placement, either at the base, center, or top of the antenna, influences radiation efficiency and mechanical stability for mobile installations. Centre-loaded whips, such as the Hustler design, offer a compromise between efficiency and stability, often for single-band operation. Helically wound antennas, including those for **28 MHz**, may present base impedances around 17 ohms, resulting in a 3:1 SWR at resonance. Low resistance grounding at the antenna base is also specified for optimizing performance and minimizing RFI during mobile operation. DXZone Focus: Mobile | Any | Antenna Tuning | HF
