This PDF article from April 2001 QST details the construction of the "NJQRP Squirt," a reduced-size 80-meter inverted-V dipole antenna. The resource provides a general construction sketch, a photograph of the assembled antenna, and specific dimensions for PC-board insulators. The antenna consists of two wire legs, each approximately **34 feet long**, separated by 90 degrees, fed at the center. It is designed for operation on 80 meters (3.5-4.0 MHz) as a quarter-wavelength antenna, requiring a low-loss feedline and an external antenna tuner due to its non-resonant feedpoint impedance. Construction utilizes readily available materials, including 1/16-inch glass-epoxy PC board for end and center insulators, and #20 or #22 insulated hookup wire for the elements. The feedline specified is 300-ohm TV flat ribbon line, with a note on potential trimming for tuner compatibility. N2CX reports the antenna's center should be elevated to at least **20 feet**, with ends no lower than seven feet above ground, resulting in a ground footprint of approximately 50 feet wide. The design prioritizes NVIS propagation for local 80-meter contacts. DXZone Focus: PDF Article | 80m Inverted-V Dipole | Construction Notes | 34 ft element length

Theory, Modeling, and Practical Applications By W5JCK, presentation in PDF File. This presentation focuses on Near-Vertical Incidence Skywave (NVIS) antennas, which are crucial for short-range radio communications, particularly in military and emergency contexts. It explores NVIS theory, antenna models, and installation criteria while debunking common myths about reflectors. Key topics include usable frequency bands, optimal installation heights, and the impact of soil quality on performance. The presentation outlines the best bands for daytime and nighttime use, emphasizing the importance of understanding propagation characteristics to enhance communication effectiveness within 200 to 300 miles.

Deploying robust antenna infrastructure for both fixed and portable operations often requires specialized support structures capable of withstanding environmental stresses while providing optimal radiating element placement. SMC offers a range of solutions, including pneumatic masts and push-up masts, designed to facilitate rapid deployment and reliable long-term support for various antenna types. Their product line encompasses antenna mounts, poles, and complete antenna systems, addressing the critical need for stable and efficient RF communication. The company's offerings extend to HF antennas, including dipoles and _NVIS_ (Near Vertical Incidence Skywave) antennas, which are crucial for short-range regional communications on bands like 80m and 40m. These systems are engineered for durability and performance, ensuring signal integrity across diverse operating conditions. With over **65 years** of experience, SMC has established itself as a global manufacturer in this niche. Their product portfolio also includes antenna support towers, catering to more permanent installations requiring significant height and load capacity for multiple arrays.

A presentation of the Yagi Antennas, and other interesting tid-bits by Brian Mileshosky. The document provides an in-depth exploration of the Yagi-Uda antenna, detailing its historical development, design principles, and performance characteristics. Originally described in the 1920s, the Yagi antenna features a driven element and parasitic elements, including reflectors and directors, which collectively determine its behavior. The document highlights how element lengths, diameters, and spacing influence gain, impedance, and directivity. It also discusses the antenna's reciprocal nature and presents data on typical gain values for various element configurations. Additionally, the text covers practical considerations, such as the construction of a "Tape Measure Yagi" for amateur use, and touches on related antenna types like dipoles and their application in Near Vertical Incident Skywave (NVIS) communication.

Designing and constructing a two-element receiving loop antenna array for HF operation involves specific considerations for achieving high directivity and noise reduction. This resource details a homebrew system comprising two 30-inch diamond-shaped loops, spaced 20 feet apart, which are fed through mast-mounted preamplifiers and passive signal combiners. The operational principle relies on adjusting phase delays between elements via precise _Belden 8241_ coaxial cable lengths, optimized for specific bands from 160m to 20m. Performance data, derived from _EZ-NEC_ modeling, illustrates consistent 90° azimuth-plane beamwidth and low take-off angles across the target bands, with _Receiving Directivity Factor_ (RDF) values comparable to a 300-foot Beverage antenna. The article presents detailed elevation and azimuth plots for 20m, 30m, 40m, 80m, and 160m, demonstrating the array's ability to provide strong response at low DX angles while also supporting _NVIS_ signals. Key components like the _DX Engineering RPA-1_ preamplifier and _DXE RSC-2_ signal combiner are discussed, alongside the importance of impedance matching to preserve antenna patterns. The construction emphasizes self-contained elements that do not require ground radials, offering a compact solution suitable for suburban environments and stealth installations, with a focus on optimizing receive performance independently from transmit antennas.

When operating Parks on the Air (POTA) in public spaces, maintaining a low profile can be advantageous, as VA3KOT discovered. This antenna design draws inspiration from several established concepts: Peter Waters G3OJV's _Invisible HF Vertical_, which uses a 13ft vertical wire and ground radials; Greg KJ6ER's _POTA PERformer_ antenna, known for its raised vertical and reduced radial count; and ideas from Jim Heath W6LG and Frank K4FMH regarding telescoping whips on photographer's tripods. The resulting antenna combines a shortened portable design with a raised feedpoint and two raised radial wires, making it suitable for multiple bands. The construction incorporates a 4:1 impedance transformer, similar to a _Rybakov_ antenna, and necessitates an external tuner for optimal performance across the bands. This approach aims to minimize visual impact while still providing effective HF communication capabilities. VA3KOT built and field-tested this antenna, reporting positive results during POTA activations. The article provides practical insights into its design and operational considerations for fellow activators seeking discreet yet efficient portable setups.

The LKJ Wednesday Night Special Antenna, designed by John Whiteman K5LKJ, is a compact 50-foot coil-loaded dipole for 80-meter operation, ideal for space-limited hams in residential areas. Using two 1-inch diameter PVC coils with 87 turns of #16 magnet wire each—placed 10 feet from the center—it tunes to 3.910 MHz for local nets like BVARC Rag Chew. Constructed with #14 wire, ceramic insulators, and Mini-8X feedline, it handles 1000W, performs well at low heights for NVIS, and requires a tuner for bandwidth. Collaborative tuning by club members ensured success.
