CW Skimmer 2.1 employs a high-sensitivity CW decoding algorithm based on Bayesian statistics, enabling simultaneous decoding of up to 700 CW signals within a receiver's passband on a 3-GHz P4 system when paired with a wideband receiver. The software features a fast waterfall display with sufficient resolution for visual Morse Code interpretation, automatically extracting and labeling callsigns on the waterfall traces. Extracted callsigns are exported as DX cluster spots via an integrated Telnet cluster server. The application includes a DSP processor with a noise blanker, AGC, and a variable-bandwidth CW filter, alongside an I/Q Recorder and player. It supports both 3 kHz radio passbands and wideband SDR receivers like SoftRock, RF Space SDR-IQ/SDR-14, SRL QuickSilver (QS1R), HPSDR Mercury, and Microtelecom Perseus. System requirements specify Windows XP/7/8/10 (32-bit or 64-bit), a Pentium-4 2.5 GHz for wideband operation or 1 GHz for 3-kHz radios, a COM port for CAT control, and a stereo sound card supporting 48 kHz sampling. It integrates with Elecraft KX3, Icom IC-7300/IC-7610, and Flex 6000 series radios, with documentation available for various setup configurations.

HotPaw MorseDecoder, an iOS application, provides real-time translation of Morse Code audio signals into plain text, leveraging the device's microphone or headset input. It incorporates a DSP narrow-band audio filter, adjustable from 300 to 2400 Hz, to mitigate background noise and QRM, enhancing signal clarity for decoding. The application offers both an automatic decoding mode and manual controls for fine-tuning parameters such as audio filter frequency, WPM dot/dash speed, noise threshold, and Farnsworth timing. The WPM detection automatically adapts from 8 to 40 WPM, with a QRQ High Speed mode extending this range to 30-80 WPM for faster code. A built-in spectrogram aids in identifying the precise audio frequency of the CW tones. User feedback indicates effective performance with various transceivers like the Yaesu FT-857 and Icom IC-R8600, particularly when manual settings are optimized. The app's ability to visually tune stations within the passband and decode speeds beyond an operator's manual capability has proven beneficial during contests and general QRP operation.

Details the construction of an **HF converter** designed by M1GEO, George Smart, specifically to extend the frequency range of the FunCube Dongle Pro (FCD) for amateur radio reception. The FCD natively covers 64 to 1,700 MHz, but this project enables reception from 0 Hz to 64 MHz by up-converting signals to the FCD's operational range. It employs a **double-balanced mixer** with a 100 MHz local oscillator (LO) to translate incoming HF signals; for instance, a 1 MHz signal appears at 101 MHz within the FCD's passband. The design incorporates a 7th-order Chebyshev low-pass filter with a 62 MHz cutoff frequency at the input to mitigate image frequencies, ensuring cleaner spectral presentation. George provides the schematic, PCB masks, and Gerber files for replication, noting that Far Circuits also offers PCBs. The resource includes test results for the low-pass filter and measurements of LO leakage, identifying -36.8 dBm at 100 MHz as a potential sensitivity concern. M1GEO discusses potential improvements, such as adjusting the mixer's LO drive, adding a balance pot, or incorporating a post-mixer high-pass filter to reduce LO breakthrough. Audio recordings from 40m and 17m demonstrate the converter's performance with WRplus SDR software.

VE3NEA presents a detailed account of designing and constructing a **helical filter** specifically for 144 MHz satellite reception, addressing severe SDR receiver overloading from nearby Land Mobile Radio Network signals between 141 MHz and 143 MHz. The author's experience with RTL-SDR, RSP1a, and Airspy Mini receivers demonstrated the necessity of a narrowband solution to enable reception in the 145.8-146 MHz range with only 3 MHz separation from strong interference. The resource delves into the theoretical underpinnings of helical resonators, drawing upon Anatol I. Zverev's "Handbook of filter synthesis." It explains the equivalent circuit of a two-resonator passband filter, highlighting the critical role of stray capacitance (C3) in determining the coupling coefficient (K) and emphasizing the importance of **critical coupling** (K=1) for optimal filter performance. Misconceptions regarding tap positions and impedance transformation are clarified, with tap placement shown to control resonator loading and the trade-off between bandwidth and losses. Construction details include sourcing materials like 1/4" copper tubing and PCB, precise assembly techniques, and the use of tuning screws for frequency and coupling adjustments. Measurements performed with a NanoVNA revealed discrepancies from initial Coil64 calculations, necessitating adjustments to helix turns and tap positions to achieve the desired 3.5 dB passband loss and 40-50 dB suppression of interference.

This PDF article introduces a series of dual-tuned bandpass filters designed for input tuning in amateur band receivers. Developed by Stefen Niewiadomski, these filters feature 50-ohm input/output impedance and can be cascaded for improved roll-off outside the passband. The designs use readily available TOKO coils, with taps on the tuned winding for matching input circuits with impedances around 1k ohm. The inductors are core-tuned, with average inductance values provided for easier matching to other inductors.

TFilter is a free online tool for designing linear phase, optimal, equiripple finite impulse response (FIR) digital filters. It utilizes the Parks-McClellan algorithm implemented in JavaScript. Users can specify the sampling frequency, desired number of taps, passbands, and stopbands to generate a filter. An example configuration is provided for easy testing.

A homebrew spectrum analyzer, the Specan, provides a crucial measurement capability often missing from the typical amateur radio shack, allowing for detailed analysis of RF signals up to 70 MHz. This double-conversion superheterodyne receiver design incorporates 112 MHz and 12 MHz intermediate frequencies, utilizing an _Si570_ as the local oscillator for fine tuning down to 1 Hz steps. It offers two resolution bandwidths: 300 KHz for broad spectrum sweeps and 1 KHz for precise close-in distortion measurements, achieving an 80 dB spur-free dynamic range at 1 KHz resolution. The project, a reboot of the classic _W7ZOI/K7TAU_ design from November 1998 QST, integrates an _Arduino_ microcontroller for controlling the Si570, managing a front-panel LCD, and communicating with a PC for spectrum plotting. This approach significantly reduces cost compared to commercial units, making advanced RF diagnostics accessible to homebrewers. The Specan can measure carrier suppression, VFO cleanliness, antenna VSWR, transmitter harmonics, and filter passband shapes, providing insights beyond what an oscilloscope or frequency counter can offer. Construction emphasizes modularity and careful shielding, with each stage built and tested individually on unetched copper clad board. The design includes detailed instructions for integrating the Arduino, building the Si570 oscillator, and aligning the various modules, often using the Specan itself for calibration. It requires a well-regulated linear power supply and can be built with common tools and readily available components, making it a practical and rewarding endeavor for those looking to enhance their RF test bench.
