Becoming a licensed ham radio operator requires passing an examination to demonstrate knowledge of radio theory, regulations, and operating practices. These exams ensure operators understand how to use their stations responsibly and effectively on the amateur bands. Many hams start with the Technician license, which grants privileges on VHF/UHF bands, before upgrading to General or Extra class for broader HF band access and more power.

New hams can find numerous resources to prepare for their exams, from online study guides like HamStudy.org and Ham Test Online to video courses and practice tests. Many Volunteer Examiner Coordinators (VECs), such as the ARRL VEC, organize exam sessions and provide information on licensing requirements and vanity call signs. Operators can also locate nearby exam sessions and even find resources for learning Morse code, which is still a popular mode for many QSOs.
