Sixty-four years of operating experience inform Glynn E. "Buck" Rogers Sr., K4ABT's, insights into the J-Pole antenna, which he describes as a direct descendant of the _Windom_ or _ZEPP_. His first article on the J-Pole appeared in HRC magazine in 1958, and he has since published numerous pieces in publications like CQ Magazine, consistently referring to the J-Pole as a Windom with a folded-back short section forming the parasitic element. He emphasizes that both the Windom and J-Pole are powerful multi-band antennas, performing exceptionally well at harmonics of their fundamental design frequency, and advocates for 50-ohm coaxial cable with a _BALUN_ at the feed-point to avoid RF energy losses. K4ABT details the J-Pole's features, noting its ease of erection, lack of radials, low angle radiation, greater bandwidth, and immunity to terrestrial noise. He highlights its suitability for local nets and distant repeaters, claiming more gain and durability than most ground planes, and its ability to meet stealth antenna requirements. The guide provides specific dimensions for 2-meter (145.000 to 146.000 MHz) and 6-meter (50.500 to 51.500 MHz) J-Pole antennas, including measurements for the long driven element, short tuning stub, and spacing. The construction section illustrates a modified feed technique using an SO-239 chassis-mount coax connector soldered into a copper tee, deviating from the usual hose clamp method. The author also discusses the use of _EMT_ (electrical metallic thin-wall conduit) as an alternative to copper in earlier days. He cautions against building a 75-meter J-Pole due to its impractical length, reinforcing the antenna's optimal application for VHF and UHF bands.

Builing a triple ration balun, that match resonant antennas from 9 ohms to 75 ohms with 1.5:1 or less SWR

The document details the optimization and construction of the _Maria Maluca_ antenna, a compact 6-band (20m-6m) directional beam. It presents a comparative analysis of shortwave antenna principles, highlighting the efficiency gains achieved by using an open feeder line and tuner as a resonant unit, contrasting this with the losses associated with traps or capacitive loads in multiband antennas. The resource specifically revisits an older South American 2-element design for 10, 15, and 20 meters, applying modern NEC-based software to develop a six-band version. Performance data is meticulously tabulated, showing impedance, free space gain, gain at 12m height, elevation angle, and front-to-back (F/B) ratio for each band from 20m through 6m. For instance, on 15m, the antenna achieves 5.1 dBd free space gain and 13.72 dB F/B ratio. The construction section provides practical guidance on element assembly using aluminum pipes and hose clamps, detailing the use of a heavy-duty glass fiber reinforced polyamide rod for electrical separation and bending strength. It also specifies the use of 450-ohm _Wireman_ line CQ 552 for the transmission line. The document includes diagrams for rod fixing, an air-wound balun, and a vertical elevation diagram for the 15m band, illustrating its DX qualification. It also discusses the antenna's suitability for portable and expedition operations, noting its compact transport dimensions (max 1.50m length, 12 lb weight) and quick assembly time (under 15 minutes). The author, Dipl.Ing. Helmut Oeller, DC6NY, is identified as a source for material kits.

Demonstrates a practical modification to convert a standard G5RV antenna into a _160-RV_ for effective operation on the 160-meter band. This project addresses the challenge of achieving Top Band resonance with a common multi-band wire antenna, providing a solution for hams with limited space or resources for dedicated 160m antennas. The design utilizes a specific length of 450-ohm ladder line and a 1:1 current balun, acting as a matching section to bring the G5RV's impedance into a usable range for 1.8 MHz. The document includes a parts list, detailed construction steps, and tuning instructions, emphasizing the importance of precise measurements for the ladder line and coaxial cable sections. It also outlines the expected SWR characteristics and power handling capabilities, making it suitable for QRO operation up to 1.5 kW. The _AD1B_ design offers a straightforward approach for extending the utility of an existing G5RV.

Operational testing of a 10.07-meter portable HF vertical antenna, constructed from telescoping aluminum tubing (36, 32, 22, 17 mm diameters), yielded SWR measurements below 1.5 across multiple bands. Initial trials on 14.150 MHz showed an SWR of 1.6, while 7.075 MHz was problematic. Subsequent adjustments, including a 13 cm extension to the radiating element, improved performance, enabling operation on 6, 15, and 40 meters without a balun, and adding 12 meters with a balun. The design prioritizes portability, allowing transport in a standard vehicle and single-person deployment. Four 10.07-meter radials are connected at the base to enhance ground plane effectiveness. The article details the mechanical assembly, including custom adapters for tube transitions and a PVC sanitary tube sleeve for base insulation, ensuring robust field deployment. Final SWR measurements, documented with an _MFJ-259_ antenna analyzer, confirm operational ranges: 6.800-7.500 MHz (SWR < 1.5), 20.800-22.500 MHz (SWR < 1.5), and 48.800-51.500 MHz (SWR < 1.5) without a balun. With a balun, the antenna achieved SWR < 1.5 on 13.750-15.000 MHz and 24.890-28.350 MHz, demonstrating its versatility for portable _DXpeditions_.

Presents a detailed construction guide for a **Quadrifilar Helix Antenna** (QHA) optimized for 137 MHz, specifically for receiving weather satellite transmissions. The resource outlines the author's experience building previous QHA designs, highlighting challenges with tuning and nulls, and then focuses on a refined design by John Boyer, documented by Steve Blackmore, which proved easier to build and yielded superior reception. The guide provides precise element dimensions, including 1.5m of 32mm PVC pipe for the mast and 8mm soft copper tubing for the helix elements. It specifies lengths for horizontal tubes (190mm, 90mm) and helix elements (903mm, 1002mm), along with instructions for drilling, assembly, and forming a **balun** by wrapping RG58 coax around the mast. The text emphasizes critical steps like ensuring elements are square and twisting in the correct direction to avoid phase issues. It includes references to original QST articles by Buck Ruperto (W3KH) and the WxSat program for decoding satellite transmissions, contextualizing the antenna's purpose. The article concludes with a sample NOAA 12 image from September 1998, demonstrating the antenna's reception capabilities.

A GSM1800 Moxon Square antenna project is presented, detailing its construction using three 1.5mm copper wire pieces for the reflector and dipole elements. The design inherently offers a 50-ohm feedpoint impedance, allowing direct connection to 50-ohm coax without complex matching networks like baluns or gamma matches, which are prone to high attenuation at 1.8 GHz if not precisely built. The resource includes a construction plan, expected **SWR plots**, and **radiation patterns** for the GSM 1800 band, specifically covering the 1710-1785 MHz transmit (red zone) and 1805-1880 MHz receive (blue zone) segments. The SWR remains below 2:1 across the entire GSM 1800 band, with the main lobe consistently achieving 5-6 dBi gain. While the radiation pattern shows some changes across the band, these primarily affect the back of the antenna, maintaining consistent forward gain. Practical considerations for high-frequency operation are emphasized, such as minimizing coax length (e.g., under 1 meter for RG-174) and selecting appropriate connectors like N, SMA, or BNC to mitigate significant attenuation. The article also discusses direct connection to the phone's RF PCB for minimal loss and notes observed signal strength variations with antenna orientation despite crossed polarization at cell sites.

This QRZ.com callbook entry by DL6GD details the construction and performance of a **40m/80m Morgain folded dipole antenna**. The resource includes a schematic diagram, construction photos, and tuning notes. The antenna, with a total length of **20.30m**, was mounted at a height varying from 4m to 6m above ground. Construction utilizes 0.75 sq mm transparent insulated copper wire, with Plexiglas spreaders (5mm thick, 70x10mm) spaced at 25mm intervals, secured with hot glue. A waterproof junction box houses the feedpoint and balun. Tuning involved adjusting wire bridges for resonance on each band. On 80m, an SWR of **1.1:1** was achieved at 3.657 MHz, with an SWR of 2.7:1 at 3.580 MHz and 2.5:1 at 3.755 MHz, yielding a bandwidth of 175 KHz. For 40m, an SWR of **1.1:1** was measured at 7.100 MHz, with 1.5:1 at 7.000 MHz and 1.3:1 at 7.200 MHz, providing a 200 KHz bandwidth. DL6GD notes that 80m tuning exhibits slight height sensitivity, while 40m tuning is less affected by height or 80m adjustments. Long-term observations from 2014 and 2022 document SWR degradation due to environmental factors like spiderwebs and ice accumulation, which can cause HF-conductive paths between elements. Demonstrates the construction of a double bazooka antenna, detailing its historical development from MIT radar applications in the 1940s to amateur radio use in the 1950s. It explains the antenna's operation as a 1/2 lambda coaxial section with open-ended stubs, acting as a shortened quarter-wave stub at resonance, presenting high impedance. The resource provides formulas for calculating total length (LT = 140/Freq) and coaxial length (LC = 99/Freq) for RG58 CU, along with specific instructions for cutting and soldering components, including a central insulator and end wires. Compares the double bazooka to a standard dipole, highlighting its 98% efficiency and twice the bandwidth. It claims a +3.6dB gain over a dipole (dipole gain 2.15dB) and a 6dB reduction in reception noise due to its closed design, which also minimizes harmonics and TVI. The antenna handles over 1.5kW (2kW PEP) without performance degradation and is effective for DX with a low radiation angle, especially when configured as an inverted V between 90° and 120° with ends 2 meters above ground. It eliminates the need for a balun and can be fed directly with 50-ohm coaxial cable.

A fractional bandwidth of up to 30:1 characterizes spiral antennas, making them highly effective across a very wide frequency range, often from 1 GHz to 30 GHz. The resource details two primary types: the **Log-Periodic Spiral Antenna** and the **Archimedean Spiral Antenna**, defining each with specific polar functions and illustrating their planar configurations. It explains that spiral antennas are typically circularly polarized, with a Half-Power Beamwidth (HPBW) of approximately 70-90 degrees, and a peak radiation direction perpendicular to the spiral plane. The content elaborates on critical design parameters affecting radiation, including the total length (outer radius) for lowest frequency, the flare rate ('a' constant) for optimal radiation versus capacitive behavior, the feed structure (often an infinite balun) for high-frequency operation, and the number of turns (typically 1.5 to 3 turns). It also discusses the theoretical impedance of 188 Ohms for Log-Periodic spirals, derived from Babinet's Principle, noting actual impedances are often 100-150 Ohms. The article presents a simple construction method for an Archimedean spiral, demonstrating VSWR and efficiency measurements. Measurements from a constructed spiral antenna show a VSWR that is fairly constant across the band, albeit with a mismatch loss of about 3 dB. The antenna efficiency remains around -5 dB (31.6%) across its operating range, indicating a decent wideband radiator despite opportunities for optimization.

The AE6AC 17-meter Moxon antenna project details the construction of a wire beam using readily available materials. This design utilizes four 16-foot fiberglass crappie poles for support, joined at the center with 3/4-inch Schedule 40 PVC pipe and "T" slip fittings. Wire segment lengths for 18.135 MHz were calculated using _Moxgen_ software by AC6LA, with specific dimensions provided in feet and inches for precise cutting. Key construction decisions include joining the crappie pole bases into a central hub and attaching the 16-gauge silver-plated copper wire to the pole ends. Dacron cord with a fisherman's knot secures the wire to the pole tips, while small wire loops at the corners maintain antenna shape. Plexiglas pieces serve as insulators for sections "A" and "C." The finished antenna, weighing less than 10 pounds, mounts on a fiberglass windsurfer mast and incorporates a 1:1 current mode ferrite bead balun. Performance measurements with an _MFJ-259B_ show an SWR better than 1.5:1 across the 17m band, with good front-to-back ratio and reported signal strength improvements of 2-4 S-units over vertical dipoles. Initial contacts included VK2AXB, ZF6GS, and KL1M.

Presents the construction of a shortened _Morgain_ dual-band wire antenna for 40 and 80 meters, specifically designed for installations with limited physical space. The design achieves a compact footprint of approximately 10 x 0.5 meters, utilizing 64 meters of 1.5 mm² insulated electrical wire. The article details an alternative configuration that reduces the antenna's physical length while maintaining its electrical characteristics for dual-band operation. Author _Remo - IM0JZJ_ conducted tests from Sant'Antioco, Sardinia, reporting SWR measurements of 1.2:1 to 1.4:1 on 40 meters. On 80 meters, SWR ranged from 1.1:1 to 1.5:1 across 3620 kHz to 3720 kHz, with a 1:1 current balun recommended for coaxial feed due to the antenna's approximately 50-ohm feed-point impedance. The installation used two 11.50-meter galvanized steel poles, supporting the antenna at about 10 meters above ground. Construction involves three wooden boards and sixteen fiberglass laminate spacers, with specific instructions for routing the 32-meter wire arms. The design eliminates jumpers for 40-meter tuning but requires two jumpers approximately 1.45 meters from the ends for 80-meter operation, which are tuned and then permanently soldered.
