The KD1JV "Melt Solder" Digital QRP SWR/Power Meter operates across the 160m to 6m bands, featuring 9.9-watt and 990-milliwatt power scales, a peak hold mode for SSB, and a VSWR scale from 1:1 to 9.9:1. It utilizes a _Stockton directional coupler_ wound on a single binocular core and an _Atmel AVR ATtiny26L_ microcontroller for processing. The design incorporates _W7EL diode compensation_ in a non-inverting amplifier feedback loop to address diode voltage drop and non-linear behavior at low power levels, with software corrections applied for improved accuracy, particularly at QRP power levels up to 5 watts. Construction details include parts placement, transformer winding instructions for #26 magnet wire, and calibration procedures using a 1.5V alkaline battery or an oscilloscope with a 50-ohm dummy load. Packaging options are discussed for fitting the board into an Altoids tin or a deeper Whitman’s Sampler tin, with considerations for battery life extension by adding a third or fourth battery. Accuracy tests performed at 7 MHz compare readings against a True RMS power meter based on an _Analog Devices AD8361_ chip, showing typical deviations of 0-5% across various power levels.

The Q-signal **QRP** signifies a request to reduce power, and in amateur radio, it defines operating with 5 watts or less for CW and 10 watts or less for SSB. This article addresses common inquiries from new hams regarding the practice, its benefits, and implementation methods. It explains how a 5-watt QRP signal, compared to a 100-watt signal, typically results in only a 13dB drop in signal strength, equating to about two S-units, still providing solid copy under most conditions. Hams choose QRP for various reasons, including seeking a greater challenge in DXing or contesting, reducing band interference, or enabling portable field operations with lightweight, battery-efficient equipment. A modern single-band CW transceiver, key, and antenna can fit into a pocket, offering receiver performance comparable to commercial rigs and extended operation on a small battery. This portability facilitates operations in remote locations where higher-power setups are impractical. Operating QRP can involve simply reducing power on an existing commercial HF rig or building a dedicated QRP transceiver from a kit, such as the **Wilderness Radio SST** with its 2-watt output and 15mA receive current draw. While SSB is viable, CW remains the most popular and efficient mode for QRP due to its superior signal-to-noise ratio. The article lists common QRP calling frequencies across 160m through 10m bands for both CW and SSB, and highlights organizations like QRP ARCI and NorCal that support the QRP community.

A 50-ohm 10W resistor forms the core of this portable QRP antenna, designed by _K0EMT_ for convenient operation on 160m and 80m. The construction involves soldering the resistor to a BNC connector, with one lead to ground and the other to the center conductor, then insulating the assembly. This minimalist design aims to provide a highly portable solution for low-band QRP operations, acknowledging the inherent trade-offs between antenna size and efficiency. Testing with an antenna analyzer revealed low SWR on both 160m and 80m, with a Yaesu FT-817 confirming good matching. While 40m and 30m showed higher SWR, the primary focus remains on the lower bands. The author successfully tested the antenna with **2.5W CW** output, demonstrating its practical application for QRP field operations where ease of deployment is paramount, even if it means sacrificing some **gain** compared to full-sized antennas.

The MFJ-971 portable antenna tuner, as stock, lacks a bypass switch and sufficient inductance for efficient 1.8 MHz operation. This modification addresses these limitations by integrating a DPDT switch for direct signal bypass, enhancing operational flexibility. Furthermore, the guide details the addition of a T130-2 iron powder toroid, wound with **29 turns** of enamelled copper wire, to augment the tuner's internal inductance. This increases the maximum inductance from approximately 17µH to around **27µH**, enabling effective impedance matching on the _160-meter band_. The modification involves cutting the wire after the 'L' tap on the original inductor and inserting the additional toroid, ensuring the entire original coil plus the new inductance is engaged when 'L' is selected. This preserves the functionality of other inductance settings while extending low-band performance. The article also highlights a potential RF burn hazard from the variable capacitor nuts on the MFJ-971, even at QRP power levels.

The ZS1J/B beacon operates on 28.2025 MHz with 5 Watts output to a half-wave, end-fed vertical antenna, initially installed in 1977 as ZS5VHF near Durban. The 10-meter transmitter is a modified 23-channel CB radio, and the identification keyer uses a diode matrix unit with TTL ICs from the same era. After relocation to Plettenberg Bay in 1993, the beacon has been in continuous service, with additional QRP transmitters later installed for other bands. In 1994, a single-transistor, 80-meter, 0.5-watt QRP transmitter with a half-wave dipole was added on 3586 kHz, followed by a 160-meter, 0.5-watt unit on 1817 kHz. A 30-meter, 0.5-watt transmitter was installed in 1996, operating on 10.124 MHz. In 2002, a 40-meter QRRP beacon on 7029 kHz, with an output of 100 microwatts, achieved DX reports up to 1100 km from ZS6UT in Pretoria. Best DX reports for the 80m and 160m beacons came from 9J2BO.

The design achieves flexible functionality through simple hardware implementation and efficient software architecture, making it particularly suitable for QRP and portable amateur radio applications.

Details the construction and performance of a phase-controlled receiving array, specifically a **MicroSWA** variant, optimized for QRP low band fox hunting on 40M and 80M. The resource documents the author's iterative design process, addressing significant regional noise challenges encountered during 0100-0230 UTC fox hunt periods. Initial experiments involved a director wire on a 40M vertical, yielding limited improvement, prompting a shift towards advanced null-steering techniques. The project leverages concepts from Victor Misek’s "The Beverage Antenna Handbook" and Dallas Lankford’s extensive work on phased receiving antennas for urban lots. A key modification involved integrating a new passive phase control box and a push-pull **Norton common base preamp** using 2N5109 transistors, designed for high third-order intercept performance to maintain weak signal integrity amidst strong adjacent signals. The system incorporates Faraday-shielded transformers with RG174 primaries on -75 ferrite cores, housed in ABS plastic pipe. Performance tests confirmed the MicroSWA's ability to produce deep, steerable nulls, achieving approximately 30 dB noise reduction on 160M, 80M, and 40M. This enabled detection of QRP signals undetectable on conventional transmit antennas. The final unit includes front panel controls, a 10-11 dB preamp, and a robust power conditioner, demonstrating effective noise mitigation for challenging low band QRP operations.

This technical document details the modification of an _Elecraft K2_ QRP HF transceiver to function as a 2-meter IF radio for microwave transverters. The project replaces aging _Yaesu FT-290R_ units, which provided 100 mW output and 6.8 V DC for T/R switching. The _K2_ modification incorporates a DEMI 144-28DC transverter board, configured for a 28 MHz IF. The _K2_ requires the K160M module for a separate receive-only antenna input and the KSB2 SSB module for SSB operation. The modified _K2_ provides a 1-watt output for the 2m IF, utilizing the QRP antenna jack for transmit and the K160M input for receive. The document outlines the physical integration and electrical interfacing, including PTT control for the transverter chain. This resource targets amateur radio operators engaged in custom hardware integration for microwave operations.
