Presents a practical design for a **crossed-dipole turnstile antenna** specifically engineered for 2-meter Amateur Radio Direction Finding (ARDF) events. The author, WB6RDV, details a robust, omnidirectional, horizontally-polarized antenna, addressing the international ARDF rules requiring such characteristics at a height of two to three meters above ground. This contrasts with the vertical polarization often used in Southern California, highlighting the design's adherence to specific event requirements. The electrical design employs a classic crossed-dipole with a 75-ohm phasing section, resulting in a slight impedance mismatch and an SWR of approximately 1.3:1 with a 50-ohm feedline. Construction utilizes readily available and inexpensive PVC plumbing components and 1/8-inch bronze welding rod for elements. The guide provides step-by-step instructions for mechanical assembly, including drilling element holes at precise 90-degree spacing and preparing the RG-179 matching section. WB6RDV shares insights from his own build experience, discussing the use of plated brass versus aluminum spacers for element attachment and the effectiveness of crimping as an alternative to soldering. The document also covers final assembly, including the integration of ferrite beads as a choke balun and options for weatherproofing and alternative mounting configurations, emphasizing the adaptability of the design for other VHF bands through scaling.

Demonstrates the construction of a 144 MHz turnstile antenna, detailing its design for omnidirectional, horizontally polarized VHF operation. The resource outlines the physical dimensions and materials required, including specific lengths for the radiating elements and the use of _RG-58_ coaxial cable for phasing. It covers the assembly process, emphasizing the critical spacing and connection points to achieve the desired radiation pattern and impedance matching for the _2-meter band_. The article presents measured _SWR_ performance across the 144-146 MHz segment, showing a low SWR of 1.2:1 at 144.5 MHz, which is suitable for general VHF use. It compares the turnstile's performance to a 9-element Yagi, noting the turnstile's advantage in providing consistent signal strength from all directions without requiring a rotator. Practical application for local FM simplex and repeater operations is implied, offering a simple yet effective antenna solution for fixed or portable stations.

A 2-meter Moxon beam antenna, designed for the _144 MHz_ band, is detailed, originating from a desire to participate in the PW 2m QRP contest. The design, based on a Moxon Rectangle, offers a compact directional solution for VHF portable operations. The author, G0KYA, constructed the antenna using readily available materials like 15mm plastic conduit for the frame and 1.5mm copper wire for the elements. Initial testing with an MFJ-259B antenna analyzer showed a **1.2:1 SWR** at 144.300 MHz, indicating good resonance. The antenna's compact size, approximately 70cm x 40cm, makes it highly suitable for portable QRP work, providing a significant advantage over an omnidirectional vertical. The project includes practical advice on element spacing and construction techniques, emphasizing ease of assembly for field deployment. Field results from a local hilltop demonstrated the Moxon's directional characteristics, allowing for effective nulling of local noise and improved signal reception from specific directions.

An omnidirectional and horizontally polarized VHF antenna by EA4EOZ

A 144 to 148 MHz J-pole antenna, optimized for base station use, is presented with detailed construction plans. This slim, omnidirectional, half-wave antenna is fed at the end through a quarter-wave shorted transmission line, drawing inspiration from the classic _Zepp antenna_. The design emphasizes achieving a 1:1 VSWR and good efficiency on the 2m band, noting that even a one-percent error in calculation can significantly impact performance. The article provides specific dimensions in inches for the radiator, quarter-wave section, and feed point, along with a parts list for construction from inexpensive materials, estimated at approximately **$10** total cost. The resource offers practical construction tips covering copper pipe selection, L and T joint variations, and detailed soldering instructions using a propane torch. It addresses feedline attachment, the critical role of a four-turn, _5-inch diameter_ choke to prevent coax radiation, and proper antenna fastening techniques, including grounding for lightning protection. The author explicitly advises against scaling the design for other bands due to potential efficiency loss and offers guidance on corrosion protection. The antenna design has been released into the public domain for private amateur use.

The Bazooka antenna, a coaxial dipole, functions as an omnidirectional antenna with vertical or horizontal polarization. Patented in 1939 and refined in 2006, it features a quarter-wavelength coaxial cable with separated conductors. The outer conductor connects to a sleeve, while the inner conductor extends vertically. Initially complex, it has been simplified for versatile use, including military applications. Adding elements can modify its behavior for NVIS or Yagi-Uda configurations. Experiments in 2007 at the Campus de Pesquisas Geofísicas in Paula Freitas-PR demonstrated consistent VHF and UHF performance, showing reliable return loss measurements despite variable weather.

While calculations are provided for a 146 MHz design, adjustments are necessary for different frequencies. Safety precautions and potential result variations are emphasized.

Operating amateur radio satellites presents unique challenges, particularly concerning antenna design and signal propagation. Juan Antonio Fernández Montaña, EA4CYQ, recounts his three-year journey into satellite communication, starting with initial guidance from EB4DKA. His early experiments involved a portable 1/4 wave VHF antenna with four 1/4 wave ground planes, designed for hand-held use to adjust polarity. This setup, paired with an FT-3000M transceiver, allowed full-duplex operation on **VHF** transmit and **UHF** receive, proving effective for early contacts on satellites like AO27, UO14, and SO35. EA4CYQ's experience highlights the critical role of coaxial cable loss and antenna polarization. After encountering significant signal degradation with longer RG213 runs, he experimented with a 1/2 inch commercial cable, noting improved reception but persistent fading due to varying satellite polarities. This led to the construction of an **Eggbeater II** antenna, an omnidirectional UHF design offering horizontal polarization at the horizon and circular right polarization at higher elevation angles. Subsequent modifications resulted in the directional **TPM2** antenna, which provided sufficient gain for LEO satellites with a wide 30-degree lobe, enabling consistent contacts from his home station. The article concludes with practical insights on the performance of the Eggbeater II for both UHF and VHF, and the TPM2 for UHF, emphasizing their utility for portable and fixed operations. EA4CYQ's journey underscores the iterative process of antenna development and the importance of adapting designs to overcome real-world propagation challenges in satellite communications.
