Restoring vintage amateur radio gear often presents challenges with accurate dial calibration due to the non-linear characteristics of analog tuning capacitors. This resource details the construction of a 100 kHz crystal calibrator, a crucial tool for precisely setting the frequency of older rigs lacking digital readouts. The design cleverly circumvents the scarcity and cost of 100 kHz crystals by utilizing a readily available 8 MHz microprocessor crystal, such as a _HC49U_ type, in conjunction with common _CMOS ICs_ like the 74HCT00 quad NAND gate and 74HCT393 dual 4-bit binary ripple counter. The circuit employs a two-stage frequency division process: the 8 MHz crystal oscillator output is first divided by 16 to yield 500 kHz, then further divided by 5 to achieve the desired 100 kHz output. A 5.1-volt Zener diode, _1N4733A_, regulates the power supply for the HCT series logic. The article also provides a modification to produce a 50 kHz calibrator by altering the counter reset logic. Installation involves feeding the output to the receiver front end, ensuring it's post-TR relay to prevent RF damage, and incorporating an ON/OFF switch for the 12V supply line.

This page displays a 404 error, indicating the original content describing a simple _RS232 interface_ circuit is unavailable. The circuit was reportedly designed for older Kenwood transceivers and featured in chapter 22 of the _ARRL Handbook_. It likely involved basic electronic components for level shifting and signal conditioning between a computer's serial port and the radio's control interface. The intended project would have detailed the construction of a hardware interface, enabling CAT control for specific Kenwood models. Such interfaces typically convert TTL or CMOS logic levels from the radio to the +/-12V levels required by RS232, often utilizing ICs like the MAX232 or discrete transistor circuits. While the specific schematics and bill of materials are absent due to the page error, the context suggests a DIY electronics project for enhancing legacy amateur radio station functionality through computer control.

An inexpensive rechargeable CMOS battery system that can be built from readily available parts.

This article describes a generalised unit for interfacing a transceiver's TTL/CMOS interface to RS-232.

Two cheap CMOS ICs and a few transistors was all that was required to rebuild an elderly TTL automatic morse keyer into a low current lightweight battery powered iambic morse keyer.

A synthesized 2.3 GHz Amateur Television (ATV) transmitter design, conceived by Ian G6TVJ, is presented, targeting broadcast-quality video performance on the 13cm band and extending up to 2.6 GHz. The core of the design utilizes a commercial Z-comm Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) that tunes from 2.2-2.7 GHz, providing a +10 dBm output and simplifying RF alignment. This VCO's stability, originally intended for narrowband applications, readily accepts high-frequency video modulation, contributing to the transmitter's robust performance. The exciter stage, incorporating a Mini Circuits VNA 25 MMIC amplifier, boosts the signal to +16dBm, while a Plessey SP4982 prescaler divides the output frequency for the synthesizer. The synthesizer employs a Motorola MC145151 CMOS parallel IC, favored over the common Plessey SP5060 for its superior video modulation characteristics and ease of programming without microprocessors. This choice addresses issues like LF tilt and distorted field syncs often seen with SP5060 designs, particularly when operating through repeaters or over long distances. The MC145151 divides the signal further, enabling precise frequency stepping, with programming handled by EPROMs for channel selection and LED display. The loop filter network, critical for video integrity, was developed through experimentation to prevent the PLL from reacting to video modulation, ensuring a clean transmitted picture. The transmitter incorporates a Down East Microwave commercial power amplifier module, delivering approximately 1.6W output, driven by the exciter through a 3dB attenuator. Construction involves surface-mount SHF components on micro-strip lines etched onto double-sided fiberglass board, housed within a tinplate box. The design boasts no AC coupling in the video path, preserving low-frequency response, a common failing in other ATV transmitters. Performance tests with a 50Hz square wave revealed no LF distortion, and a calibrated "Pulse & Bar" signal showed a near 100% HF response, demonstrating its capability for high-quality ATV transmissions.

The Spartan Sprint Special 40m CW Transceiver, originally documented in 2002 and reproduced in 2019, details a **QRP** direct conversion rig designed for portable operation. This project evolved from an experimental CMOS digital IC receiver, which proved too noisy for weak signals, into a dedicated 40-meter CW transceiver. The author, VE3SMA, aimed for reduced size, lower weight, and decreased receive current drain compared to earlier iterations, drawing on his extensive contesting experience and even his time operating million-watt transmitters at Radio Canada International. This compact transceiver delivers approximately 200 mW output, VFO-tunable over 15 kHz within the 40m band, and weighs a mere 73 grams (0.16 lb) including its balsa wood case. It features fast semi-break-in and sidetone, with a receive current draw of about 14 mA (no signal) and transmit current draw around 125 mA key down. The design incorporates various construction techniques, including knife-cut surface mount boards and through-hole components, often salvaged from junked cordless phones and cellphones. Despite its direct conversion architecture, which offers usable but not superheterodyne-level selectivity, the rig proved effective, achieving a fourth-place finish in a June 2001 Spartan Sprint contest when paired with a 26-foot vertical antenna. The article provides comprehensive circuit details, including an unconventional VFO using a high-speed CMOS inverter chip and a balanced mixer utilizing a 74HC4053.
