The project details modifications to an ARK-40 QRP CW transceiver kit, specifically replacing its original thumbwheel frequency selectors with a **BASIC STAMP BS-II microcontroller** and an optical shaft encoder. The redesigned control circuitry outputs a BCD code to the ARK-40's synthesizer, enabling more convenient knob-type tuning. This modification significantly alters the user interface, moving from discrete frequency selection to continuous tuning. Operating frequency is presented on an LCD readout, offering two distinct display modes: a "bandspread dial" mode that simulates an analog dial scrolling across the display in 1 kHz increments, and a conventional digital readout with 100 Hz resolution. Pushing the main tuning knob toggles between these modes, providing both rapid band traversal and fine-tuning capabilities. The software for the BASIC Stamp is written in P-Basic, addressing the challenge of accurate analog dial simulation. Physical modifications include fabricating a custom PC Board for the STAMP, mounting it with an L-bracket to the optical encoder, and creating a new front panel. The front-mounted speaker was relocated to accommodate the new tuning knob and display, transforming the **ARK-40 transceiver** into a more user-friendly rig with its built-in CW keyer and 5 watts of power.

This is a 200 Watt PEP step up transformer for end fed full and half wave antennas without radials, designed as a 200 Watt PEP

The Baofeng UV-5R handheld transceiver, introduced around 2012, operates across the 2-meter (144-148 MHz) and 70-centimeter (420-450 MHz) amateur bands, offering dual-band receive and transmit capabilities. This review provides an early assessment of the radio's form factor, user interface, and general performance, noting its compact size and the inclusion of a **VFO/Memory mode** button for frequency management. The device supports both FM and narrow FM modes, with a reported power output of 4 watts on VHF and 3 watts on UHF, making it suitable for local simplex and repeater operations. Key features discussed include its 128-channel memory capacity, a built-in VOX function, and a **DTMF keypad** for tone dialing and repeater access. The review highlights the radio's ability to scan frequencies and memories, along with a dual-watch function allowing simultaneous monitoring of two frequencies. Battery life is addressed, with the standard 1800 mAh Li-ion pack providing several hours of operation depending on transmit usage. Initial impressions cover the radio's construction and the clarity of its LCD display, which shows both A and B band frequencies.

WB8LZR details the construction and initial field results of a multi-band vertical wire antenna, designed to complement his existing horizontal loop for improved DX on 80 meters. The antenna utilizes a 67-foot vertical wire, configured as a quarter-wave radiator on 80m, and employs a 1:1 current balun for RF isolation on 80m, 30m, and 17m. For bands like 40m, 20m, and 10m, where the wire acts as a half-wave or full-wave radiator, an additional impedance transforming _unun_ is integrated to manage the significantly higher feedpoint impedance and voltage. The author notes the vertical's performance as a receiving antenna, observing reduced noise compared to his main horizontal loop, particularly on 80m, and even hearing some long-path signals the loop missed. Initial QRP contacts, including a **1-watt** QSO with a _VP2 station_ on 30m, demonstrate its transmit capability. While the radial system is currently rudimentary, the project outlines practical considerations for multi-band vertical deployment and impedance matching.

The 1/4 wavelength vertical antenna project, initially designed for 20 meters, has evolved into a versatile portable solution covering 10 through 60 meters. K0BXB details its construction, emphasizing a bottom-loaded design with a tapped loading coil and four 10-foot counterpoise wires. The author shares personal experiences and field results, including **18 QSOs** during a park activation on 17m and 30m with 10 watts, and a **2,435-mile** contact with a contest station in Bonaire on 20m using 5 watts. Comparisons are drawn to commercial offerings like the _Wolf River Coils TIA_ and _QRPGuys Triband Vertical_, highlighting the DIY antenna's small footprint, light weight, and ease of tuning for POTA activations. The resource includes insights into using test equipment such as the _NanoVNA_ for SWR optimization and discusses various radiator lengths, from 17-foot wire to a 102-inch whip, demonstrating adaptability for different portable setups. Construction tips cover coil winding, tap placement, and connecting feedlines and radials using common components.

Constructing a **J-Pole antenna** from 450 Ohm ladder line for 2-meter (144 MHz) and 70-centimeter (440 MHz) operation involves specific calculations and assembly steps. The design, based on an earlier KD6GLF concept using 300 Ohm twinlead, features a ¾ wavelength radiator and a ¼ wavelength matching stub, functioning as an end-fed half-wave antenna without requiring ground radials. It offers a gain of 2.4 dB over isotropic. The resource provides the formulas for determining the lengths of the ¾ wave radiator and ¼ wave stub, incorporating a velocity factor of 91% for 450 Ohm ladder line. For 146 MHz, the radiator measures 55 3/16 inches and the stub 18 3/8 inches. Construction details include cutting a 57¾-inch piece of ladder line, stripping 4 inches from one end, and attaching a 24-inch section of RG58 or RG8X coax with a 3-5 turn RF choke. SWR adjustment is achieved by sliding a shorting bar or by incrementally trimming the elements at a 1:3 ratio (stub to radiator). The goal is a 1:1.1 SWR at 146 MHz, which typically yields 1:1.2 at 446 MHz. The article also discusses power handling, noting that while 10-15 watts is fine, 50 watts may increase SWR to 1:2.1, and advises keeping the antenna away from other objects to prevent coupling and SWR degradation.
