Optimizing low-band signal performance for contesting and DXing often involves complex antenna systems. This resource presents the FVR Spitfire Array, a "poor man's 4-square" design specifically engineered for the 80-meter and 160-meter bands. The core content is a PowerPoint presentation originally delivered at the 1998 Dayton Hamvention, outlining the design principles and practical considerations for this phased vertical array. The FVR Spitfire Array aims to provide directional gain and improved signal-to-noise ratio on the lower HF bands without the need for a large, rotatable Yagi. The design focuses on achieving effective directivity and pattern control using vertical elements, a common approach for enhancing receive and transmit capabilities on 160m and 80m, where full-sized Yagis are impractical for many stations. The presentation likely covers construction details, phasing networks, and expected performance characteristics. Further information is provided through an additional FAQ document, addressing common questions and offering clarifications on the array's operation and implementation. This supplementary material helps operators understand nuances of the design and troubleshoot potential issues, making the project more accessible for those looking to build or adapt the FVR Spitfire Array for their own station.

QRPPAL, developed by WB2QAP, functions as a freeware QRP logging application for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95, initially introduced at the 1996 Dayton Hamvention FDIM QRP symposium. The software integrates the original "Logger" program, which was specifically designed for ARCI contest dupe checking and logging, alongside versions tailored for NW-QRP, MI-QRP Club, and Colorado QRP Club contests. It is distributed as a self-extracting archive, _qrppal!.exe_, approximately 1.2 MB in size, which unpacks _qrppal.exe_ and _setup.exe_ for installation. The program's modular design incorporates extensive QRP-centric databases, covering ARCI awards, QRP club listings, QRP periodicals, kit/vendor directories, and detailed rig reviews, often with photos. Noted reviewer Bob Gobrick, _VO1DRB_, described it as a "QRP Internet Web Site in a box" due to its comprehensive data modules, which are also user-modifiable. Installation involves running _setup.exe_ to create batch files like _setup95.bat_, which then establish a c:\qrppal directory and deploy the program files. Users initiate the application by typing "qrp pal.tkn" after setup. The Colorado QRP Club contest version should be avoided due to specific first name exchange requirements not supported by that module.

The Yaesu FT-1000MP Mark-V, introduced at Dayton 2000 Hamvention, features a higher RF power of **200 W PEP** and a Class-A amplification SSB mode at 75 W. Key enhancements include an _Interlocked Digital/Analog Bandwidth Tracking system (IDBT)_, a Variable Front-End Filter (VRF) preselector, and improved ergonomics, notably a multi-function shuttle jog dial. This model, a successor to the 1996 FT-1000 and FT-1000MP, was designed to compete with high-end transceivers, despite its retail price of $4200 initially. The transceiver's physical dimensions are 406 x 135 x 348 mm (16 x 5.3 x 13.7 inches) with a weight of 14 kg (31 lbs), making it substantial. Its rear panel offers over 20 connections, including power, external DSP speaker, BAND DATA I/O, ALC, and multiple interface jacks for DVS-2, Packet, and RTTY. The unit also provides two keyer inputs, a DB9M serial interface for CAT, and two PL female antenna connectors, plus additional receive antenna jacks. Despite its advanced internal architecture, including two independent receivers with their own IF filters and AGC loops, the display technology, utilizing fluorescent discharge rather than LCD, contributes to an older aesthetic. The control panel is extensive, featuring 92 knobs and buttons, alongside numerous LED indicators for various modes and functions.

The AT-AUTO automatic antenna tuner handles 1.5kW CW operation, employing stepper motors under microprocessor control to precisely position a roller inductor and air-dielectric variable capacitor, avoiding relay-switched discrete components. This design choice prevents loud relay clacking and burning contacts, a common issue with competing products. The tuner features auto-retuning capabilities and receives periodic firmware updates, ensuring continuous improvement and added user-requested features. Its companion product, the _CX-AUTO_ coaxial switch, also features an embedded microprocessor controller. It enables selection of 1-of-8 coaxial outputs via a serial data interface. When integrated with the _AT-AUTO_, the tuner can associate specific coaxial outputs with amateur radio bands, automatically commanding the _CX-AUTO_ to select the correct antenna when the operator QSYs to a different band. Don Kessler began designing the AT-AUTO in 2005, with its debut at the 2006 Dayton Hamvention. Kessler Engineering also offers custom RF product design and electrical engineering consulting, specializing in Class-E RF amplifiers.

The Elecraft KX2 is presented as a highly portable QRP transceiver, covering 80-10 meters with SSB, CW, and data modes. Key specifications include its remarkably light weight of only **13 ounces** (0.3 kg), an optional internal 2.6 Ah Li-ion battery, and an internal wide-range automatic antenna tuner (ATU). This _software-defined radio_ (SDR) architecture incorporates advanced DSP features such as dual watch, noise reduction, noise blanking, and autonotch, alongside built-in PSK31/RTTY data mode operation without requiring an external PC. Designed for maximum portability, the KX2 measures 5.8 x 2.8 x 1.5 inches and delivers up to **10 watts** of output power. Its low current drain of 135 mA allows for up to 8 hours of typical operation on a single battery charge, making it suitable for field deployment. The transceiver also features a built-in microphone for HT-style use and is compatible with the KXPA100 amplifier, offering versatility for various operating scenarios from desktop to mobile or handheld.
