Details the construction and optimization of antenna systems for amateur radio satellite operations, focusing on practical, homebrew solutions for VHF/UHF bands. It covers building _groundplane antennas_ from salvaged materials, recycling old beam antennas into new configurations like a 2-meter crossed yagi, and constructing a 10-meter horizontal delta loop. The resource also explains antenna matching techniques, including folded dipole driven elements and quarter-wave transformers, along with the importance of accurate SWR measurements and minimizing coax loss. Demonstrates how to achieve a **1:1 SWR** by carefully trimming elements and adjusting radial angles on groundplane antennas. It provides insights into selecting appropriate coax and connectors, highlighting the benefits of Belden 9913 for low loss and the proper installation of _N-connectors_. The article also addresses RFI mitigation from computer birdies and presents a design for a silent triac antenna control circuit, offering practical solutions for common satellite station challenges.

Presents the K9AY Loop, a compact, directional receiving antenna system optimized for low-band operation, demonstrating its design and construction. The resource details the physical and electrical simplicity of the terminated loop, which consists of a wire loop, a ground rod, a 9:1 impedance-matching transformer, and a terminating resistor. It compares the K9AY system's real estate requirements to an equivalent EWE array, showing it needs only one-seventh the area while providing identical directional patterns. The article includes schematics for the relay box and control unit, specifying components like DPDT relays, steering diodes, and a 43 material toroid for the matching transformer. The resource provides practical construction steps, including material lists for two 85-foot wire loops, insulators, a copper ground rod, and a 25-foot support. It discusses the critical role of the terminating resistor (RTERM), with values ranging from 390 to 560 ohms for 160m and 80m optimization, respectively. Performance evaluation methods are outlined, suggesting listening tests with local AM stations or WWV to verify front-to-back (F/B) ratios of 2 to 3 S units. EZNEC modeling results for vertical and horizontal radiation patterns are presented, showing a broad front lobe and a deep rearward null at 30-40 degrees elevation, crucial for reducing local noise and QRM.

The "Shortish Guide to Using an Oscilloscope" elucidates the fundamental operation of oscilloscopes, detailing the purpose and function of vertical, horizontal, and triggering controls. It explains how vertical gain in Volts/cm and horizontal scale in sec/cm enable measurement of signal amplitude and timing, respectively. The resource differentiates between analog and digital scopes, noting that digital scopes often feature "soft" controls and are inherently storage scopes capable of capturing non-repetitive events. The guide dedicates a significant section to the critical role of oscilloscope probes, emphasizing their design to transmit waveforms without distortion or added noise. It explains the concept of a 10x passive scope probe, which reduces circuit loading by a factor of ten and eliminates waveform distortion through probe compensation, typically adjusted using a 1kHz square wave reference output. The document also provides practical advice on probe care and compensation procedures. Further sections address grounding considerations, explaining how a scope measures voltage relative to its chassis ground, which is tied to the protective earth. It offers troubleshooting steps for a blank screen and outlines essential good practices, such as checking input gain and probe attenuation, while explicitly warning against misusing probes or connecting the ground clip to mains voltage.

Presents RigOne, a radio controller application designed for Windows 10 (later releases) and Windows 11, with a macOS version under active development. The software provides core operational controls such as tuning, VFO following, signal metering, and audio management, emphasizing a clean interface for everyday use. It supports native Icom direct control, with the **IC-7300** serving as the primary tested profile, and integrates **Hamlib** for broader compatibility across various transceivers. The resource details specific features, including frequency and mode read/write, VFO A/B switching, quick mode/band selectors, and switchable analog-style or horizontal-bar signal meters. For the IC-7300, RigOne offers an integrated panadapter, waterfall display, native VOX control, and Twin PBT controls, leveraging live scope data for an enhanced visual operating experience. The application focuses on essential functions, avoiding unnecessary clutter. It outlines the latest version, v1.2.5.1, highlighting updates like a compact layout selector for Tall mode, direct frequency entry, and refined fixed 16:9 panel layouts. The page also clarifies hardware compatibility, noting extensive testing with the IC-7300 via USB/COM CI-V, and invites user feedback for expanding Hamlib support to other radio models, ensuring the software evolves based on real-world amateur radio station use.

This project describes a high-performance EME antenna array consisting of two home-designed 9-element Yagis, each about 2.5 wavelengths long, combined into a 25-ohm system and matched to 100 ohms using 9/4λ sections of 50-ohm coax. The array supports rotatable polarity from 0° to 180°, allowing both horizontal and vertical polarization to optimize moonbounce performance under varying conditions. Despite operating for years without a balun—something another designer called “disastrous”—the system has delivered strong results, including copying very weak DX such as VK3KH at about -25 dB with only 120 W (around 2 kW ERP). The builder continues to refine the mechanics, having installed new gear motors and an upgraded follow-up control system in 2011.
