The journal consistently features diverse content, from exploring the capabilities of modern transceivers like the Icom IC-9700 for digital modes to discussions on antenna theory, such as building a vertical HF antenna without radials. It also addresses contemporary issues, exemplified by an article unpacking the FAA's "CW interference" directive concerning Boeing 787 transponders, clarifying that the interference is not related to amateur radio Morse code but rather unmodulated carrier signals impacting aviation frequencies around 1030 MHz and 1090 MHz. Furthermore, the publication includes lighter fare like "No-ham Recipes," club meeting minutes, and member profiles, providing a holistic view of the amateur radio community. It offers multiple access options for each issue, including full and lower-resolution PDF downloads, an online magazine reader, and an experimental AI-LLM audio podcast version, making its extensive content readily accessible to a global audience in over 165 countries.

The article offers practical guidance for setting up Field Day antennas, emphasizing the unpredictability and need for quick adaptations. It provides a comprehensive table of wire lengths for various bands and antenna types, using 1mm bare wire, in both metric and Imperial units. The author highlights the benefits of this table in saving time and reducing errors. While acknowledging potential variations due to construction and environmental factors, the article presents the table as a reliable starting point, with plans for future updates to include more bands and antenna types. This resource is valuable for ensuring efficient and accurate antenna setup during Field Day events.

Inverted L antenna, even if not completely freestanding, it only requires one line to be lauched into a tree to support the end of the horizontal wire. This project is done with a 31-foot Jackite pole for a support and uses six 15-foot radials and one 33-foot radial.

Details the construction of a portable 6-meter 4-element quad antenna, specifically designed for VHF and Field Day operations. The design emphasizes portability and rapid field assembly, utilizing a 10-foot boom, #12 bare wire elements, and fiberglass electric fence post spreaders. It presents specific dimensions for reflector, driven element, and directors, including spreader lengths, circumferences, and corner marks, all derived from a G0KSC design and modeled in EZNEC. The resource outlines the fabrication of synthetic lumber hubs that allow post-assembly adjustments along the boom, and describes spreader clamps made from ¾” OD fiberglass rod, drilled and tapped for 8-32 nylon thumbscrews to secure element wires. It provides instructions for reducing spreader ends to 0.370” OD for proper fit and details the assembly of the boom from two 1½” OD x 6’ aluminum tubes. Performance data from EZNEC modeling indicates a gain of 10.25 dBi (8.1 dBd) and a 20 dB F/B ratio at 50.150 MHz, with SWR values of 1.08, 1.09, and 1.11 at 50, 50.15, and 50.5 MHz respectively. The document includes a field test report from Field Day 2010, where the antenna was deployed at 21 feet, showing an SWR resonance 200 KHz below EZNEC predictions. It notes successful 5-watt QSOs into New York and Canada from Tennessee, highlighting the antenna's excellent directivity and gain compared to a 4 dBd Moxon. The antenna breaks down into easily transportable components, including two 5’ boom sections, a 3’ boom connector, 16 spreaders, and four element/spreader clamp assemblies.

The author tested the antenna design using MMANA and NEC2 software, based on a solution published in QST. Detailed diagrams and instructions are provided for constructing the antenna on top of a 12 meter mast, with specific wire lengths and positioning to ensure optimal performance. This resource is valuable for hams looking to build a directional antenna for the 20m band and improve their field day setup.

This is a theoretical look at propagation on 630-Meters and 2200-Meters using ray tracing software. It expands on the brief discussion in the ARRL Handbooks. The Earth's magnetic field affects 630-Meter and 2200-Meter band propagation. Lower ionization reduces absorption, aiding low-frequency propagation. Differences exist between bands, limited daytime sky-wave propagation. Sunrise/sunset show promise, yet mechanisms are unclear. Ducting possible at night in specific conditions. Negative ions enhance propagation. Inefficient antennas and high man-made noise are anticipated. Groundwave propagation is significant on 2200-Meters.

This page details a portable setup for the Yaesu ATAS-120 antenna, designed for Field Day and similar portable operations. The setup utilizes a modified music instrument stand as a base, providing a stable, low-to-the-ground platform. An antenna mounting plate secures the ATAS-120, with a PVC tube adapter fitting into the stand. The radial system consists of fifteen 0.1 wavelength radials for 40 meters (4m/13'), grouped into five sets of three wires, each attached to a ground lug. These lugs connect to bolts on the mounting plate with wingnuts, allowing the radials to spread out at 24-degree angles. The author successfully used this setup with a Yaesu FT-897D on 40m, 20m, and 15m SSB during Field Days in Western Washington, achieving East Coast contacts during daylight hours. The design emphasizes stability without the need for guy wires.
