Over 30 distinct shortwave (SW) receiver models are reviewed, offering insights into their performance, features, and user experiences. These evaluations, contributed by readers of the Usenet newsgroup **Rec.radio.shortwave**, cover a wide array of portable and tabletop radios, including popular units like the Grundig YB-400, Sony ICF-SW77, and various Realistic DX series models. Each review details aspects such as frequency range, tuning steps, SSB functionality, antenna performance, and construction quality, often comparing them to other receivers or ham transceivers like the Icom 725. For instance, the Grundig YB-400 review highlights its 144-30000 kHz AM/SSB coverage, direct keypad entry, and 40 station memories, noting its useful narrow bandwidth and tone switch for adjacent signal separation. It also discusses the **SSB mode** stability and the limitations of its 1 kHz frequency resolution for precise zero-beating. The review further details antenna performance, including the effectiveness of the built-in whip, the provided 7m reel antenna, and the potential for overload with larger outdoor antennas. Other reviews delve into specific issues, such as the Sony ICF-SW77's frequency display inaccuracies and timer malfunctions, or the Realistic DX-342's compact size and surprisingly good MW DXing capabilities despite its analog tuning. The collection provides practical, user-generated feedback on sensitivity, selectivity, audio quality, and ergonomic features, helping shortwave listeners understand the real-world performance and quirks of these receivers.

Eham.net review of ICOM IC-2720H

Examines the Icom IC-2100H 2-meter mobile transceiver, detailing its operational characteristics and user experience. The review highlights the clear, easy-to-read display with internal labels, the button-filled microphone's functionality, and the rig's physical construction, including its weighty heat-sink and lack of a cooling fan. It also discusses memory programming, the unique amber-to-green backlight color options, and the radio's performance against _intermodulation_ in urban environments, noting it performs "pretty darn good" compared to other rigs. The analysis delves into a significant low-voltage cutoff problem, where the microphone ceases to function below approximately **12.6 VDC**, rendering the radio receive-only or causing it to stick in transmit. The author describes testing the voltage cutoff, observing it fluctuate from _12.38 VDC_ to 12.69 VDC. An update from Icom involved a "factory update" to the CPU's control code, which is strongly recommended for early-serial number units to prevent operational failure in low-power emergency scenarios.

The Receiver Test Data resource is a detailed review database focusing on the performance metrics of various radio receivers. The methodology involves rigorous lab measurements, often adhering to standards such as the ARRL RMDR (Reciprocal Mixing Dynamic Range) and BDR (Blocking Dynamic Range). Specific test equipment and protocols are utilized to assess parameters like noise floor (dBm), AGC threshold (uV), and LO noise (dBc/Hz). For example, the _Icom IC-7300_ is evaluated with a noise floor of **-133 dBm** and an LO noise of **-141 dBc/Hz**, providing insights into its performance under different operational conditions. The resource includes a wide range of models, from the _Elecraft K3S_ to the _Yaesu FTdx-101D_, each tested for dynamic range, sensitivity, and selectivity. The data is sorted by key metrics such as third-order dynamic range and phase noise limitations, with RMDR values calculated by subtracting 27 dB from LO noise figures. This structured approach allows users to compare different receivers' capabilities, focusing on technical specifications and performance outcomes in various scenarios. DXZone Focus: Review Database | Lab Measurements | -133 dBm | ARRL RMDR

The X80 multi-band HF vertical antenna, a commercial iteration of the Rybakov design, exhibits a physical length of 5.5 meters, or approximately 18 feet, and is constructed from aluminum tubing. It operates as a non-resonant vertical, requiring an external antenna tuner for impedance matching across its intended operating frequencies. The antenna's design incorporates a 1:4 UNUN at its base, facilitating a nominal 50-ohm feed point impedance for the coaxial cable. Performance observations indicate effective operation on 40 meters, 20 meters, 15 meters, and 10 meters, with reduced efficiency on 80 meters and 160 meters due to its relatively short electrical length for these lower bands. Comparative analysis with a G5RV dipole and a half-wave end-fed antenna reveals the X80 offers a lower take-off angle, beneficial for DX contacts, particularly on the higher HF bands. Field tests conducted with an Icom IC-706MKIIG transceiver and an LDG AT-100ProII autotuner demonstrate the X80's ability to achieve acceptable SWR across 80m through 10m. The antenna's compact footprint and ease of deployment make it suitable for restricted spaces or portable operations, though its performance on 80 meters is noted as a compromise compared to full-size resonant antennas.

Demonstrates various practical amateur radio projects and technical discussions through video episodes. One episode details cutting and retuning a _1/4 wave shorted stub_ from 101.7 MHz to 107.5 MHz to safeguard a transmitter's driver stage, alongside insights into advanced _160-meter antenna systems_ like eight-circle arrays and beverage antennas. Another segment covers upgrading firmware on an _ATS-20+_ receiver using AverDudes for improved display and functionality, and a detailed guide on using D-Star DR mode on an _ICOM ID-52A_ for international repeater programming. Additional content includes a deep dive into _OpenHamClock_ as a potential replacement for the HamClock project, updates on _Raspberry Pi 5_ running Trixie OS, and a review of the Choyong LC90 Internet radio with AI integration. The series also features "Ham College" episodes, which meticulously prepare viewers for the Technician Exam by covering topics such as antenna and transmission line measurements, SWR interpretation, and the functions of basic electronic components like rectifiers, relays, and transistors. Practical advice on coaxial cable characteristics, dummy loads, and proper soldering techniques is also provided.

Jose B Rivera, N2LRB, shares his initial experiences with the Icom IC-7300, recounting a shift from skepticism to appreciation for the transceiver. He details how the radio's impressive Sherwood Engineering test results, ranking it #12, significantly influenced his decision, especially considering its competitive price point against higher-end options like the Elecraft K3s. The review highlights the IC-7300's strong receive capabilities, a key factor in N2LRB's purchasing decision, and notes the advantages of its SDR architecture for future updates. He describes the straightforward setup process, from unboxing and connecting PowerPole connectors to making a first contact with N0HQ, a special event station. N2LRB expresses satisfaction with the radio's clear audio and ease of tuning, even if the pan-adapter's utility for his operating style remains to be fully explored. He concludes that the IC-7300 offers exceptional value, providing SDR features and receive performance comparable to more expensive rigs at half the cost.
