This resource details the construction of a versatile CW/QRSS beacon, designed around a Microchip _PIC16F84_ microcontroller. The project provides a flexible platform for transmitting either standard CW or very slow QRSS signals, making it suitable for LF, VHF, UHF, and SHF applications. It supports two distinct messages, each configurable for speed (from 0 to **127** WPM for CW, or up to **127** seconds per dot for QRSS) and repetition within a six-phase sequence. The core functionality relies on the PIC's EEPROM, which stores all operational parameters, including message content, transmission speeds, phase configurations, and relay control settings. This design allows for parameter modification directly via programming software like _ICProg_ without altering the main program code. The project includes a detailed schematic, a component list, and an explanation of the EEPROM memory mapping for messages, speeds, phase settings, and inter-phase delays. General-purpose outputs (OUT1, OUT2, OUT3) provide dry relay contacts for external control, enabling functions such as power switching, antenna selection, or frequency changes. A 'TRIGGER' input facilitates controlled starts or continuous free-run operation. Sample EEPROM configurations illustrate how to program specific beacon sequences, including message content and relay states.

The _Italian VHF Beacons_ resource provides a detailed listing of active and QRT amateur radio beacons operating across VHF, UHF, and SHF bands within Italy. Each entry specifies the beacon's callsign (e.g., IQ1SP/B), operating frequency (e.g., 144.411 MHz), QTH locator (e.g., JN44VC), effective radiated power (ERP) in watts, and antenna configuration (e.g., Big Wheel, 4x Dipole, Yagi). This data is crucial for radio amateurs involved in propagation studies, equipment testing, and long-distance (DX) communication on these higher frequency bands, offering fixed signal sources for monitoring. This compilation, last updated in October 2005, serves as a historical snapshot of Italian beacon activity. For instance, it lists several 144 MHz beacons with ERPs ranging from **0.1W** to **10W**, and higher frequency beacons such as I8EMG/B on 1296.880 MHz and I3EME/B on 24192.132 MHz. The inclusion of QRT (Quiet Radio Teletype) status for many entries indicates the dynamic nature of beacon operations over time. Users can utilize this information to identify potential signal sources for band openings or to calibrate their receiving equipment against known transmissions.

The site offers access to downloadable information files, including an Abbreviations List, NDB List Country List, and NDB Publications List, which serve as foundational materials for newcomers to the hobby of beacon monitoring and DXing. It covers specialized topics such as DGPS beacons, GMDSS DSC mode, and NAVTEX mode, with dedicated sections providing in-depth explanations. A Beacon Photo Gallery showcases diverse radiobeacon types from around the globe, offering visual context for different systems encountered in the field. The platform also facilitates participation in unique monthly Coordinated Listening Events (CLEs), providing guidelines and schedules for these activities. The resource outlines various associated Groups.io lists, including the primary NDB List for radiobeacons (NDBs, Propagation Beacons, VOR systems), the DGPS List for DGPS DXing, Time Signals, LORAN, and WeFAX modes, and specialist groups like NavtexDX and DSC List for GMDSS-DSC. It details how to join these communities for further engagement and information exchange.

BeaconSpot.uk provides an accurate, real-time picture of microwave and VHF/UHF beacons operating across Europe, alongside a worldwide listing of 6-meter beacons. The platform allows users to retrieve detailed data for individual beacons, facilitating in-depth analysis of signal characteristics and propagation paths. Interactive maps visualize beacon distribution by frequency band and display spot coverage for each station, offering a clear geographical overview of active beacons. The system integrates real-time DXCluster spots, sourced from contributors like Alain, ON4KST, and Pascal, F5LEN, and enables users to submit outgoing spots directly to the DXCluster. Beacon keepers can manage their beacon data, receive email alerts upon being spotted, and track their station's ODX (Outstanding DX) records. For every received spot, the distance to the beacon is automatically calculated and displayed, aiding propagation studies.

The worlds oldest vhf-uhf beacon

The ZS1J/B beacon operates on 28.2025 MHz with 5 Watts output to a half-wave, end-fed vertical antenna, initially installed in 1977 as ZS5VHF near Durban. The 10-meter transmitter is a modified 23-channel CB radio, and the identification keyer uses a diode matrix unit with TTL ICs from the same era. After relocation to Plettenberg Bay in 1993, the beacon has been in continuous service, with additional QRP transmitters later installed for other bands. In 1994, a single-transistor, 80-meter, 0.5-watt QRP transmitter with a half-wave dipole was added on 3586 kHz, followed by a 160-meter, 0.5-watt unit on 1817 kHz. A 30-meter, 0.5-watt transmitter was installed in 1996, operating on 10.124 MHz. In 2002, a 40-meter QRRP beacon on 7029 kHz, with an output of 100 microwatts, achieved DX reports up to 1100 km from ZS6UT in Pretoria. Best DX reports for the 80m and 160m beacons came from 9J2BO.

The software also offers a Watch List for callsign alerts and Sun/Moon Az/El widgets for satellite and EME operations. The application provides extensive contest and logging context through integration with _N1MM Logger+_ UDP, Cloudlog API, QRZ Logbook, and ADIF file support, allowing recent QSOs to be mapped directly. A Special Event mode is available for club stations, enhancing field day operations. DXChrono Desktop runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Raspberry Pi 4/5, requiring a 64-bit OS and at least 4 GB RAM for optimal performance, distinguishing it from simpler HamClock-style appliances.

John Lemay’s (G4ZTR) review of the Yaesu FT-847 offers a practical look at this all-mode transceiver, spanning 160m to 70cm, including 4m. While it falls short in dynamic range and sensitivity, its "shack-in-a-box" design shines for VHF DXing and multi-band use. Lemay shares hands-on tweaks, like calibrating 70cm with beacons and integrating footswitches for SSB and CW. The TX Inhibit feature simplifies sequencing with external gear. Despite minor flaws, the FT-847’s versatility and mod-friendly nature make it a solid pick for amateur radio enthusiasts craving flexibility.

Open Signal, a software application for Windows 10/11 and 64-bit Linux, facilitates the transmission of color pictures, photo files, and text over HF and VHF amateur radio bands. It integrates its own error-corrected OFDM digital picture mode, delivering pixel-exact images in under a minute, with classic analog SSTV across six families: Martin, Scottie, Robot, Wraase, PD, and MMSSTV's MP/MR, featuring automatic VIS mode detection on receive. The application offers four distinct sending methods, including byte-exact JPEG transfer, a hybrid mode utilizing internet for full quality with a short RF link, and its proprietary digital waveform. This self-contained executable eliminates the need for external software like FLDIGI, Hamlib, or virtual audio cables, simplifying setup. It includes a self-filling logbook that integrates with Wavelog/Cloudlog, eQSL, and provides UDP ADIF broadcast. Built-in spotting features include PSK Reporter, DX cluster announcements, and APRS-IS position beacons. The receive-only version is permanently free, while a full license, enabling transmit capabilities and access to the live network, is available for an annual or lifetime fee. The software is actively maintained, unlike EasyPal, which has not seen updates since 2014.
