This article describes how to make a quadrifilar helix (QFH) antenna easily, from inexpensive materials: uPVC plumbing pipe and RG-58U co-axial cable. A low-cost, easy-to-build Quadrifilar Helix (QFH) antenna for weather satellite reception using uPVC plumbing pipe and RG-58U coaxial cable. Unlike traditional designs requiring copper pipe and plumbing skills, this approach enables construction with basic tools and minimal technical expertise. The antenna's shorter, wider proportions favor higher elevation angles, reducing interference from horizon-level pager transmitters. Electrical connections are simplified at the antenna's apex, with the coaxial cable forming the radiating elements. Testing demonstrated consistent signal strength throughout satellite passes, proving effective weather satellite reception is achievable without precision engineering to sub-millimeter tolerances.

The Waterway Net, sponsored by the Waterway Radio and Cruising Club, is dedicated to enhancing amateur radio communications for recreational boaters. Meeting daily at 0745 ET on 7.268 MHz LSB, the net focuses on safety and weather updates, providing a vital link for live-aboards and cruising boats to stay connected with families and friends. Position Reports and Float Plans are essential components that ensure safety for offshore passage makers. Established in the early sixties, the Waterway Net is one of the longest-running nets in amateur radio history. Open to all amateur radio operators with a General class license or higher, it encourages participation without requiring WRCC membership. Newcomers are advised to listen initially to understand net procedures before checking in. In emergencies, FCC regulations allow anyone, licensed or not, to use any frequency to call for help, with the 20-meter frequency of 14.300 MHz available for emergency assistance approximately eighteen hours a day.

This project introduces the Loggi, a hybrid antenna merging the wide frequency coverage of log-periodic dipole arrays (LPDA) with the high gain and front-to-back ratio (F/B) of Yagi antennas. Traditional LPDAs span broad frequencies with moderate gain and low VSWR, while Yagis provide high gain and F/B over narrow bands. By analyzing high-Tau LPDA designs, it was found they could nearly match the gain of VHF/UHF Yagis while maintaining excellent patterns, F/B, and front-to-rear ratios (F/R). Optimizing specific elements for target frequencies (e.g., 144.1 MHz) led to the Loggi, which uniquely features all driven elements without passive directors or reflectors. This design effectively functions as a narrowband optimized LPDA, with front elements acting like Yagi directors and rear elements like Yagi reflectors, thus enhancing gain and directional characteristics while retaining broad frequency versatility.

This article describes an HF upconverter for the FunCube Dongle Pro. Designed for radio amateurs, the converter extends reception capabilities to lower frequencies (0 Hz to 30 MHz) by mixing them with a higher oscillator frequency (100 MHz). This translates the desired signal into a range detectable by the FunCube Dongle (64 to 1,700 MHz). Key components include a double-balanced mixer and a low-pass filter to suppress unwanted signals. The project provides schematics, filter specifications, and design considerations for construction.

The article details the repair of an Elecraft K3 transceiver experiencing an "ERR 12V" issue, causing reduced output power. The problem, common in these units, stems from inadequate pin strips carrying high DC current to the PA unit, leading to overheating and poor conduction. The author identified the faulty connectors and implemented a bypass using existing PCB pads, effectively rerouting the power and resolving the error. This straightforward fix highlights the importance of robust electrical connections in high-current applications, restoring the K3's full functionality.

The FF-501DX LPF, a high-performance VHF and 10m filter, was obtained at a friend's SK sale. After becoming more active on 10m, the author reexamined the LPF and discovered it to be of high quality. The filter's efficiency was outstanding and the return loss/VSWR was better than estimated. The LPF was connected to a Bird 50R dummy load to evaluate insert loss, cutoff, attenuation over 70MHz, and return loss. The original specifications were found in an old radio magazine, along with a link to the original one-page information sheet. Comparing the results to the original specs confirms the LPF's quality.
