The author, WB8ERJ, shares insights into building these devices, noting their application in amateur radio for projects like Hinternet or HSMM (High-Speed Multimedia) networks. The article outlines the necessary components and steps, emphasizing the DIY aspect for hams interested in digital modes and local area networking. The resource explains how to determine the correct probe placement within the can, a critical dimension for optimal performance at 2.4 GHz. It references specific measurements, such as the 1.25-inch distance from the can's bottom, derived from calculations for the 2.4 GHz band. This precision ensures the antenna functions effectively for its intended purpose of signal amplification. Readers gain actionable knowledge for fabricating a functional antenna from common materials, suitable for experimentation or practical deployment in a ham shack or field environment. The focus remains on the hands-on construction and the measurable results of improved signal strength.

Constructing a high-gain, compact antenna for 2 meters often involves balancing theoretical performance with practical build challenges. WB8AHT recounts his journey in building a 6-element _Super Duper Moxon_ antenna for 144 MHz, inspired by designs from M0PXS and GW3YDX. He initially encountered discrepancies in published dimensions for the _HAARP Antenna_ and the _Super Moxon_, leading to on-air SWR issues and suboptimal performance. His methodical approach involved cross-referencing, direct communication with Phil Simpson (M0PXS), and iterative adjustments to element lengths based on observed results and a _SARK-110 Antenna Analyzer_ scan. After modifying the reflector/driven element and third director dimensions, the antenna achieved a respectable 1.35:1 SWR at 144.200 MHz. Field testing with 50 watts yielded contacts up to 500 miles, suggesting performance close to the 15 dBi gain predicted by _4NEC2_ software, despite its compact 40-inch boom. The article includes specific construction notes, such as tubing sizes (1/2-inch and 3/8-inch aluminum) and feedpoint spacing (50mm). The author's experience highlights the importance of real-world validation for antenna designs, even those with strong theoretical backing. He provides a table of tubing lengths for 6m, 4m, and 2m versions, along with his final, optimized dimensions, offering a practical blueprint for fellow hams interested in replicating or further experimenting with this high-performance, small-footprint VHF antenna.

A copper pipe Hentenna for 144 MHz. The Hentenna, a compact, high-gain loop antenna developed in Japan in the 1970s, offers approximately 5.1 dBd gain, comparable to a three-element Yagi. Adapted for 2 meters, it is crafted from copper pipe for simplicity, affordability, and broadband performance. Requiring no feed-point tuning, its construction involves soldering standard copper fittings. Installation demands non-conductive materials to minimize signal disruption. Versatile for vertical or horizontal polarization, it is ideal for FM, repeater, SSB, or CW applications. This design emphasizes practicality and performance for amateur radio enthusiasts

Constructing a portable, high-gain antenna for _AO-40_ satellite operations presents unique challenges, particularly regarding mechanical stability and parabolic accuracy. This resource details the build of a 1.2-meter "brolly dish" antenna, utilizing a non-conducting fiberglass umbrella frame as its foundation. The project outlines a method for achieving a parabolic shape using stressed aluminum fly screen mesh, guided by practical geometry and a temporary dowel template. Key steps include selecting an appropriate umbrella with a suitable f/D ratio (ideally >0.25), removing the original fabric, and precisely cutting and attaching eight segments of fly screen to the struts to form the reflective surface. The construction process, which took approximately five hours for the author, _G6LVB_, resulted in a dish with an f/D of 0.27 (depth=270mm, diameter=1160mm, f=310mm). The article also describes a modification to a _TransSystem AIDC_ feed, incorporating a PCB reflector behind the dipole for easier mounting. Performance tests at a squint angle of 15 deg and a range of 50,000km yielded a signal-to-noise ratio of 33dB on the S2 beacon and 23dB for SSB signals, indicating strong reception. The author notes that the modified umbrella may not close fully without risking surface disfigurement.

The collinear antenna, or Marconi-Franklin antenna, is an omnidirectional, high-gain antenna composed of in-phase half-wave dipoles aligned vertically. By using quarter-wave transmission line segments, it maximizes gain at a low horizon angle, outperforming a half-wave dipole. Adding segments increases gain but narrows bandwidth. A popular DIY version, the CoCo antenna, uses half-wave coaxial cable segments connected by non-radiating transmission lines. Built with stable velocity factor cables, a matching quarter-wave sleeve balun, and ferrite rings for attenuation, the antenna achieves performance comparable to commercial models.

Demonstrates optimizing an **ON4UN-type 4 Square antenna** for enhanced performance across the lower HF bands, specifically 160m through 10m. The article details a design that utilizes a single support structure for the vertical elements, significantly reducing construction complexity and cost compared to traditional multi-tower setups. It emphasizes the use of **elevated radials** to achieve improved gain and a lower receive noise floor, providing insights into the design principles and practical installation tips for this directional array. K0UO shares his experience with this low-cost, high-gain solution, including the integration of a hybrid coupler phaser.
