A 15-pin data switch, typically a rotary-knob type designed for DB-25 connectors, forms the basis for this microphone selector project. The resource details the conversion process, which involves replacing the original DB-25 connectors with **RJ-45** or **RJ-12** jacks to accommodate modern amateur radio microphones. It specifically addresses wiring for radios like the Icom IC-706 series (including the IC-7000 and IC-703) and Yaesu transceivers such as the FT-857, FT-897, FT-817, FT-7800, FT-7900, FT-8800, FT-8900, FTM-100, and FTM-400. The design ensures all microphone lines are switched straight through, with separate contacts for external speaker/headphone jacks, allowing simultaneous switching. The project emphasizes the practical application of switching between a headset for net control and a hand mic for rag-chewing without repeatedly plugging and unplugging cables. It highlights modifications to the original concept, such as eliminating a separate PTT jack by integrating PTT into headset cables and building the external speaker cable directly into the selector. The article provides guidance on managing the non-color-coded wiring often found in these data switches by soldering wires one by one from old to new connectors, ensuring correct pin alignment. This approach simplifies the conversion, making it accessible for hams seeking a functional and cost-effective mic switching solution.

Designed for the FT-817, this audio speech compressor, centered on the Analog Devices SSM2165, offers a 40 dB compression range, enhancing signal power. Built externally with the SMD version to preserve warranty, the circuit interfaces smoothly with electret microphones. Testing shows a 6 dB average power increase. Adaptable to rigs with electret microphones, it maintains unity gain and 40 dB compression.

Inspired by Heathkit, author aimed to enhance his Yaesu FT-817 with audio and RF processing. Design goals included a compact enclosure, PCB simplicity, matching jacks, a visual meter, and a built-in signal generator. Despite challenges in finding a suitable compressor IC for a 5V DC mic jack, he chose the Analog Devices SSM2165/2166 series. If your FT-817 has stopped powering up from the internal battery but works from external power, then maybe the internal battery fuse has blown. There is a small PCB mounted fuse to protect the battery and radio. This fuse can blow, if it does your radio will not work from battery power. This page will describe how to test the fuse and describe how to make a repair.

An FT-817 ceased transmission on the VHF 2m band, despite the other HF, UHF, and 50 MHz bands operating correctly. Suspecting an excess of input signal during FT-8 mode transmission, they conducted measurements with an oscilloscope, revealing a burnt-out PIN diode, identified as D3003, type HSU277, on the PA unit board. Following the replacement of this surface-mounted diode, their FT-817 resumed operation on the 144 MHz band.

This study analyzes the antenna pattern of the Utah Amateur Radio Club's 146.760 MHz repeater following antenna relocation in 1997. Noting degraded transmission toward the north, a customized signal mapping system using a Yaesu FT-817, GPS, and software was developed to log real-time signal data. Calibration techniques extended the radio's signal range, enabling precise field measurements. The method allowed continuous signal strength monitoring while driving, revealing anomalies in coverage likely due to tower modifications. Findings helped assess and visualize the antenna’s actual radiation pattern and highlighted environmental impact on signal distribution.
