FT-240 toroids measurements. The data was measured using well-calibrated HP instrumentation. All plots have been adjusted to a frequency range of 1-100 MHz on the horizontal axis and a resistance/impedance range of 10-1,000 ohms on the vertical axis. This adjustment facilitates comparison among different materials and aids in determining their suitability for use on the HF ham bands.

Demonstrates optimizing an **ON4UN-type 4 Square antenna** for enhanced performance across the lower HF bands, specifically 160m through 10m. The article details a design that utilizes a single support structure for the vertical elements, significantly reducing construction complexity and cost compared to traditional multi-tower setups. It emphasizes the use of **elevated radials** to achieve improved gain and a lower receive noise floor, providing insights into the design principles and practical installation tips for this directional array. K0UO shares his experience with this low-cost, high-gain solution, including the integration of a hybrid coupler phaser. The author's field testing confirms the benefits of elevated radials in achieving better far-field performance. The optimized 4 Square design offers a practical alternative for hams seeking a directional array without the extensive infrastructure typically required. Comparisons are drawn to traditional ground-mounted radial systems, highlighting the superior gain and reduced noise characteristics observed with the elevated configuration, making it a compelling option for DXing and contesting on the lower HF frequencies.

A 5/8-wavelength vertical antenna for 2-meter FM operation is detailed, focusing on eliminating loading coils by utilizing a series inductor to cancel capacitive reactance at the feed point, thereby presenting a 50-ohm impedance match. The design illustrates three basic configurations, including a method employing a short-circuited coaxial stub for inductance, as implemented by K4LPQ. An alternative design is presented where the center conductor of the stub is extended one-quarter wavelength, creating a signal-frequency short and allowing for an insulated wire stub to develop the required series inductance. The article provides electrical theory and mechanical considerations for building the antenna, emphasizing the adjustment of stub length for proper impedance matching. This technical documentation is intended for amateur radio operators interested in homebrewing VHF antennas, offering practical insights into impedance matching techniques for vertical radiators.

HAMgpt offers a personalized amateur radio experience, leveraging AI to provide real-time operational guidance. It integrates live propagation data, current band conditions, and operator-specific context, including callsign, QTH, license class, and station equipment, to deliver relevant answers. The system can identify open HF, VHF, and UHF bands, suggest workable DXpeditions and POTA/SOTA activations, and provide accurate repeater offsets and CTCSS/DCS tones for local repeaters. Unlike general-purpose chatbots, HAMgpt avoids fabricating frequencies or license privileges, instead relying on actual data for its responses. It supports antenna design calculations for various types like Yagi, dipole, vertical, and magnetic loop antennas, offering to-scale dimensions. The platform also assists with license exam preparation and provides satellite pass predictions tailored to the user's location. It supports multiple countries, including the United States (FCC Technician, General, Extra), Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, and Argentina, incorporating their specific band plans and power limits.

The XW4DX DXpedition website documents the amateur radio operation from Laos, a country ranked #98 on Clublog's Most Wanted list. This resource provides insights into the planning and execution of a significant DXpedition, including antenna choices like _Hexbeams_ at 14m, a 4-square for 40m, and a top-loaded vertical for 160m. The team, comprising operators such as _F4BKV Vincent_ and _F2DX Patrick_, focused on challenging paths, particularly towards the North American East Coast, where Laos is #41 most wanted. Operational constraints included prohibitions on 6m, 30m, 60m, and 80m bands within Laos, necessitating a focus on other HF frequencies, especially 160m and 40m. The expedition utilized up to five stations simultaneously, with equipment transportation being a major logistical challenge, partially mitigated by direct shipments from _Spiderbeam_ and donor support. The expedition ran from November 16th to 27th, 2023, with the complete XW4DX log uploaded to LoTW by December 23rd, 2023. This site serves as a historical record of their efforts to put Laos on the air for DXers worldwide.
