Building a 2 metre 144MHz VHF Yagi beam antenna, designed for portable use.

Demonstrates the construction of a 144 MHz turnstile antenna, detailing its design for omnidirectional, horizontally polarized VHF operation. The resource outlines the physical dimensions and materials required, including specific lengths for the radiating elements and the use of _RG-58_ coaxial cable for phasing. It covers the assembly process, emphasizing the critical spacing and connection points to achieve the desired radiation pattern and impedance matching for the _2-meter band_. The article presents measured _SWR_ performance across the 144-146 MHz segment, showing a low SWR of 1.2:1 at 144.5 MHz, which is suitable for general VHF use. It compares the turnstile's performance to a 9-element Yagi, noting the turnstile's advantage in providing consistent signal strength from all directions without requiring a rotator. Practical application for local FM simplex and repeater operations is implied, offering a simple yet effective antenna solution for fixed or portable stations.

The _Italian VHF Beacons_ resource provides a detailed listing of active and QRT amateur radio beacons operating across VHF, UHF, and SHF bands within Italy. Each entry specifies the beacon's callsign (e.g., IQ1SP/B), operating frequency (e.g., 144.411 MHz), QTH locator (e.g., JN44VC), effective radiated power (ERP) in watts, and antenna configuration (e.g., Big Wheel, 4x Dipole, Yagi). This data is crucial for radio amateurs involved in propagation studies, equipment testing, and long-distance (DX) communication on these higher frequency bands, offering fixed signal sources for monitoring. This compilation, last updated in October 2005, serves as a historical snapshot of Italian beacon activity. For instance, it lists several 144 MHz beacons with ERPs ranging from **0.1W** to **10W**, and higher frequency beacons such as I8EMG/B on 1296.880 MHz and I3EME/B on 24192.132 MHz. The inclusion of QRT (Quiet Radio Teletype) status for many entries indicates the dynamic nature of beacon operations over time. Users can utilize this information to identify potential signal sources for band openings or to calibrate their receiving equipment against known transmissions.

G/T (Gain-to-Noise Temperature) is a critical figure of merit for evaluating the receive performance of VHF/UHF antennas, particularly for weak-signal work like EME (Earth-Moon-Earth) or meteor scatter. This resource presents extensive simulation data for numerous 2-meter and 6-meter Yagi antenna designs, originally compiled by _VE7BQH_ (Lance Johnson). The lists, updated as of October 2017, include various antenna models from designers such as _DK7ZB_, G0KSC, and K1FO, providing key performance parameters. Each entry details the antenna's G/T value, gain, front-to-back ratio, beamwidth, and VSWR at specific frequencies like 144.1 MHz or 145.0 MHz. The data facilitates comparison of different Yagi configurations, including those with folded dipoles and varying intrinsic impedances, aiding radio amateurs in selecting optimal antennas for their specific operational needs on the 2-meter and 6-meter bands.

A 4 elements Yagi-Uda antenna for 144.3 MHz plan with dimensions and yagimax dimension calculation

A 2m band Moxon antenna design is presented, centered at 145.2 MHz, with dimensions derived from Moxgen software. The design features a calculated 6 dBi gain, an 80-degree beamwidth, and an impressive 43 dB front-to-back ratio with minimal back lobes, concentrating RF energy in the forward direction. The antenna is balanced to 50 Ohms, facilitating direct feed. SWR sweep data from 144 MHz to 146 MHz demonstrates a near 1:1 SWR at the center frequency, maintaining healthy SWR values across the entire 2m amateur band. This performance is comparable to a 3-element Yagi, yet the Moxon offers advantages in compact size and ease of mast mounting, making it suitable for various operating environments.

A great and efficient monoband VHF portable antenna. The article consist of two version of a 12.5 Ohm 3 elements yagi beam antenna plans for the two meter band, a full sized and a shortened version expecially designed for the SSB and CW on 144 MHz.

Constructing a directional antenna for VHF operations, particularly for 2-meter band contests or local communication, often involves balancing performance with ease of build. The Moxon rectangle, a compact two-element beam, offers a good front-to-back ratio and gain in a smaller footprint compared to a Yagi, making it suitable for portable or temporary setups where space is limited. This design typically uses a driven element and a single reflector, bent into a rectangular shape to achieve its unique radiation pattern. The article details the construction of a 2-meter Moxon antenna, specifically for 144 MHz, utilizing readily available materials like PVC pipe for the frame and copper wire for the elements. It outlines the dimensions for the driven element at 970mm and the reflector at 910mm, with a spacing of 140mm between them, and a 50mm gap at the element ends. The feedpoint is a direct 50-ohm connection, simplifying matching requirements. The project includes a parts list, a basic diagram illustrating the element layout and dimensions, and photographs of the completed antenna. The author notes the antenna's performance during a QRP contest, achieving contacts up to 100km with 5 watts, demonstrating its effectiveness for low-power VHF work.

144MHz 2m Portable Yagi VHF Beam Antenna. This page contains construction details on a 2 metre 144MHz VHF Yagi beam antenna, designed for portable use.

This project introduces the Loggi, a hybrid antenna merging the wide frequency coverage of log-periodic dipole arrays (LPDA) with the high gain and front-to-back ratio (F/B) of Yagi antennas. Traditional LPDAs span broad frequencies with moderate gain and low VSWR, while Yagis provide high gain and F/B over narrow bands. By analyzing high-Tau LPDA designs, it was found they could nearly match the gain of VHF/UHF Yagis while maintaining excellent patterns, F/B, and front-to-rear ratios (F/R). Optimizing specific elements for target frequencies (e.g., 144.1 MHz) led to the Loggi, which uniquely features all driven elements without passive directors or reflectors. This design effectively functions as a narrowband optimized LPDA, with front elements acting like Yagi directors and rear elements like Yagi reflectors, thus enhancing gain and directional characteristics while retaining broad frequency versatility.

A home made project for a 7 element yagi antenna for the two meters band based on the DK7ZB original desing.

Presents the design and construction of a folding 5-element Yagi antenna specifically engineered for 144 MHz portable operation, particularly for VHF contest Rover categories. It details element dimensions, boom construction using ¾-inch pine, and a folding mechanism that reduces the 52-inch boom to 26 inches for transport. The document provides a table with precise element distances and lengths, including a 2.4 mm length correction for solid parasitic elements, and specifies the use of 3/16-inch solid aluminum for parasitic elements and brass tubing for the driven element. It also covers the bent dipole driven element design for impedance matching, balun implementation with Type 31 ferrite beads for common mode current suppression, and weatherproofing for the feed point. The resource includes predicted performance data from 4NEC2 modeling, showing SWR and return loss characteristics, as well as gain and front-to-back ratios at various frequencies across the 2-meter band. It reports a measured SWR of 1.2:1 at 144.2 MHz and 1.5:1 at 147 MHz, corrected for 25 feet of RG-8/M coaxial cable loss. The design offers approximately 1.5 dB more gain than a previous 4-element design, maintaining a decent SWR up to 147 MHz, and was successfully deployed in a winning June 2016 ARRL VHF Contest Rover entry.
