Optimizing antenna portability for QRP field operations often involves trade-offs between efficiency and physical footprint. The PAC-12 antenna project addresses this by presenting a **multi-band portable vertical** design, specifically tailored for amateur radio operators who travel frequently and utilize compact QRP transceivers like the Elecraft K1/K2 or Yaesu FT-817. This design emphasizes ease of homebrewing using readily available hardware store components, allowing for customizability and repair in the field. The project details the construction of a sectional aluminum rod base, interchangeable loading coils for various HF bands, and a telescoping whip. Key components include 1/4-inch aluminum rod, PVC risers for coil forms, and a BNC feedpoint insulator. The design prioritizes a breakdown length of 12 inches or less, making it highly packable for travel, while still achieving competitive efficiency, as demonstrated by its first-place finish in the HFPack antenna shootout at Pacificon 2001 against a 1/4-wavelength wire vertical. Comprehensive instructions cover whip preparation, **loading coil construction** with specific dimensions for bands from 40m to 10m (with an untested 80m approximation), base section fabrication, and feedpoint insulator assembly. The resource also includes guidance on radial deployment, threading aluminum rod, and showcases various PAC-12 builds by NJQRP Club members, illustrating its adaptability and widespread adoption among QRP enthusiasts.

A self-supporting vertical antenna design for stationary-mobile HF-VHF operation is presented, emphasizing ease of construction with common materials like a fiberglass fishing rod and PVC pipe. The design focuses on creating a set of no-tuner monoband radiators for bands such as **2m**, **6m**, 10m, and 12m, with an overall radiator support length of 3.3m. The construction process details the assembly of the antenna base using a magnetic mount, PL-259 connector, and PVC pipe sections, which then supports the telescopic fishing rod. Radiator extensions are cut to achieve quarter-wave resonance on specific bands, with detailed instructions for 6m (50-51 MHz), 10m (28.5 MHz), and 12m (24.9 MHz). For lower HF bands like 15m, 17m, and 20m, the design incorporates base-loading coils, with specific turn counts provided (e.g., 21 turns for 20m). The project also suggests using an _antenna analyzer_ for precise tuning of extensions and coils, moving beyond theoretical values to achieve optimal performance. The author, _IK1ZYW_, notes that for 80m and 160m, the antenna becomes less efficient as a vertical, suggesting alternative configurations like an inverted-V dipole or asymmetrical inverted-L.

A **mobile HF multiband antenna** project details the construction of a center and top-loaded design, optimized for 10 through 80 meters. This antenna incorporates a capacity hat positioned high on the whip for enhanced efficiency, differing from commercial bugcatcher designs. The coil construction prioritizes high Q and minimal loss through an air core, open spacing, and heavy gauge wire, contributing to its lightweight nature and suitability for portable operation with a proper counterpoise. Band switching is achieved by manually moving a jumper plug to various tap points on the coil, allowing for operation across multiple bands, with 17m being resonant when the coil is bypassed. The design, a result of nine months of experimentation by N1LO, includes detailed instructions for modifying a Hamstick antenna base, creating a jumper wire, and assembling the capacity hat using stainless steel wire and silver-bearing solder for robust connections. The loading coil utilizes nylon grommet strips around a PVC pipe for an air-core winding, ensuring high efficiency. Tap sockets are fashioned from silver-plated 5-way binding posts, providing low-resistance RF joints for band selection. Guidance on tap point determination emphasizes using an antenna analyzer like the MFJ 259B or 269 to achieve resonance, especially on 40m and 80m where feedpoint resistance can be low. The document also covers the installation of monofilament stays to maintain antenna uprightness at highway speeds, with specific attachment points for stability.

WB2VUO presents a practical examination of effective HF mobile antennas, focusing on the inherent efficiency challenges encountered on the lower bands, specifically 160, 80, and 40 Meters. The resource delves into the necessity of loading coils for mobile operation below 21 MHz, where full-sized antennas are impractical. It contrasts base-loaded and center-loaded designs, noting that base-loaded antennas are simpler for the average ham to construct but offer lower efficiency compared to center-loaded configurations. The author provides specific data for an 8-foot whip, detailing its electrical length and _radiation resistance_ across various HF bands, from **0.08 ohms** on 160 Meters to **16.1 ohms** on 12 Meters. This data highlights the extremely low radiation resistance on lower frequencies, which significantly impacts feedpoint impedance due to ground and feedline losses. The discussion includes practical considerations for feedpoint impedance, noting that a typical 8-foot whip on 10 Meters might present 30-45 ohms, allowing for acceptable SWR without an ATU. Construction sketches illustrate both base-loaded and center-loaded mobile antennas, with advice on material selection like galvanized steel for rugged bottom sections. The article also includes coil value charts from the _ARRL Mobile Manual_ for both base and center loading, emphasizing the importance of using large diameter wire to minimize losses and suggesting capacity hats to reduce coil inductance and improve performance on 160-40 Meters.

A 3.42-meter (11-foot 2-inch) extended-length mobile antenna project is presented, detailing its evolution from an initial 1.65-meter design. W5JGV shares his journey in optimizing mobile HF performance, noting that increasing the top whip length significantly improved radiation efficiency by reducing coil losses and allowing for larger wire gauges. The article includes a comparative table illustrating substantial gain increases, with the 3.42-meter version showing up to 40.6% efficiency on 21.2 MHz compared to a half-wave dipole. Construction details are thoroughly documented, from the use of hard-wall copper pipe for mast sections to the fabrication of custom loading coils. The author explains the necessity of an insulating brace for self-supporting coils and details a unique rotational alignment mechanism for off-center mounted coils to prevent snagging on overhead obstructions. He also describes a "Z" winding technique for 75-meter and 160-meter coils, which minimizes copper losses and manages dielectric losses. The resource provides specific loading coil data, including wire gauge, number of turns, coil length, and inductance values for bands from 18 MHz down to 2 MHz. It emphasizes that these coils may require fine-tuning based on individual vehicle and whip configurations, suggesting an antenna tuner for optimal mobile station operation across multiple HF bands.

Presents the design and construction of an automatically tuned 7-30 MHz mobile HF vertical antenna, originally published in _QEX / Communication Quarterly_ in 2003. The resource details a base-loaded vertical antenna system that mounts on a vehicle's roof, incorporating a variable inductor as its loading coil. A three-legged chariot, driven by a modified model airplane servo, travels inside the coil to adjust inductance. The control unit, featuring a _Basic Stamp microcontroller_ and SWR sensor, emulates a Kenwood AT-50 tuner for seamless integration with a _Kenwood TS-50_ transceiver, allowing automatic tuning across all ham bands from 40 to 10 meters. The project emphasizes practical application, providing a solution to the narrow-banded nature of mobile HF antennas and the inconvenience of manual band changes. It achieves a maximum SWR of 1.3:1 across its operating range. The mechanical design is thoroughly documented with detailed drawings, including a full-resolution GIF and AutoCAD R14 DWG files, illustrating components like the stainless steel whip, PVC coil tube, and the servo-driven chariot mechanism. Construction requires a lathe, but the author notes it can be accomplished with a hobby lathe, making it accessible to those with moderate mechanical skills.

The resource also mentions the use of an antenna analyzer for more precise tuning, contrasting it with the SWR method.

M0VEY shares insights into constructing a 160-meter mobile DX aerial, detailing the process of sourcing materials and assembly. The project began with a goal to avoid a £50 commercial antenna, instead utilizing a £10 reel of _enamelled copper wire_ and salvaged components like alloy tent poles and plastic water pipe. A friend fabricated a custom stainless steel tube for mounting, featuring a 3/8” thread for a mag-mount, enabling secure vehicle attachment. The aerial's design incorporates four alloy tubes, one plastic tube, and a five-foot whip, engineered to split into two pieces for convenient storage. The loading coil, wound with approximately 115 feet of 0.75mm wire onto a plastic former, was then sealed with blue heat shrink. M0VEY reports successful operation, making contacts across the UK and Europe, with the aerial standing about ten feet tall for local nets at 1.972 MHz and taller for the DX window around 1.845 MHz. Future plans include a base-loaded 160m aerial and an 80m version, leveraging components from the existing _160m DX Mobile Aerial_ to maintain a similar overall size with a smaller coil.

The K0RWU 75-meter mobile antenna design features a 7.5-foot overall length, incorporating a 2.5-foot loading coil wound with #20 enamel wire on a 1/2-inch fiberglass rod, subsequently covered with 1/2-inch shrink tubing to increase diameter to 3/4 inch. This configuration achieved resonance at 3965 kHz with a 5-foot stainless steel whip. The antenna integrates a matching transformer, identified by larger turns near the PL259 connector, and is constructed using a modified Radio Shack CB antenna base. Construction involves drilling and epoxying a 1/2-inch fiberglass rod into a PL259 connector, feeding #20 enamel wire through the rod, and winding 17 turns of #18 matching coil wire between the PL259 sleeve and the center feed point. The main loading coil fills the 2.5-foot rod section. The design allows the antenna to bend for garage clearance and emphasizes maintaining a 50-ohm feed impedance to prevent vehicle electrical damage. The author also discusses experiences with a Yaesu ATAS-100 motorized antenna and a 10-meter antenna project, noting issues with auto couplers and the ATAS-100's performance on 17 meters. Future modifications considered include adding a small servo for band spreading and increasing the fiberglass rod length for a 3-foot loading coil to improve bandwidth. The antenna's sharp tuning, between 3960 kHz and 3970 kHz, necessitates careful adjustment of coil turns for optimal VSWR.

A 5/8 wavelength mobile whip antenna for 2 meters can be constructed from a 5-foot CB helical whip, requiring the removal of original wire and installation of a new radiating element made from coax braid. The design incorporates an 8-turn loading coil with 5mm spacing, fabricated from the original whip wire, and utilizes approximately 1400mm of RG-58 coax braid for the radiating element to enhance flexibility and bandwidth. Final whip length is approximately **1350mm** from base to braid end, with tuning adjustments made by trimming the braid. Dual-wall 12mm heat shrink, such as _Jaycar WH5643_, is recommended for weatherproofing and stabilization, costing around $4.50 per 1200mm length. Achieving a 1.1:1 VSWR may not be feasible; a 1.5:1 VSWR is considered acceptable. Optimal mobile mounting is centered on the vehicle roof to minimize radiation pattern variations.

Practical application notes cover tuning adjustments by varying the whip length and coil tap points, emphasizing the importance of a good ground plane for effective operation.

A 60-foot available space, for example, might necessitate a shortened multiband dipole array to cover 80, 40, and 15 meters effectively. This resource details the construction of such an antenna, combining full-size and coil-loaded dipoles on a single feedline. It addresses the common challenge of fitting multiple HF bands into restricted physical footprints, providing practical guidance for hams with smaller backyards or portable operations. The core of the offering is an interactive calculator that determines required loading coil inductance and dipole lengths for various amateur bands from 160m to 10m. Users input their available space, and the tool provides dimensions, coil turns, and an efficiency rating (Good or Fair) based on the antenna's electrical length relative to a quarter-wavelength. It also suggests suitable _PVC_ pipe diameters for coil forms. The article further illustrates a center feed-point assembly using an 18-inch section of 2-inch _PVC_ pipe, detailing eye-bolt spacing and coaxial connector installation. It emphasizes the importance of adequate spacing between parallel dipoles and offers customization options for the feed-point, including the addition of a _Balun_ for improved feedline isolation.

The PAC-12 Antenna, a multi-band portable vertical, is meticulously detailed in this construction article by James Bennett, _KA5DVS_. The design emphasizes ease of homebrewing using readily available components from local hardware stores, including replaceable loading coils. It outlines the preparation of the 72-inch telescoping whip (originally from Radio Shack, with an alternate source now provided by _Pacific Antenna_), the construction of the loading coils from PVC risers, and the fabrication of the aluminum rod base sections. Specific instructions cover threading aluminum rod with a _1/4-20 threading die_ and assembling the feedpoint insulator with a BNC connector, along with recommendations for radial deployment. KA5DVS, an avid traveler and QRP enthusiast, developed the PAC-12 to address the bulkiness of random wire setups and the limitations of commercial portable antennas like the Outbacker or SuperAntennas MP1. His goal was a lightweight, packable antenna that disassembles into 12-inch sections, achieving an assembled length of approximately 8 feet. The design strategically places the loading coil away from the base for improved efficiency. The PAC-12 notably placed first in efficiency compared to a quarter-wavelength wire vertical at the HFPack antenna shootout during the Pacificon conference in October 2001, demonstrating its practical performance for field operations. Appendix C showcases various _NJQRP Club_ members' PAC-12 constructions, including a 20m beam made with multiple PAC-12 elements.

The _G3TSO_ Mobile Antenna Page details construction and tuning methods for mobile antennas operating across **10 to 160 metres**. The content describes a Hustler-based design, optimized for RF performance and vehicle speeds, featuring centre loading. For optimal operation on various bands, the loading coil placement requires clearance from the vehicle body. Antenna resonance is critical for efficient mobile operation. A mobile antenna's base impedance may be as low as 27 ohms, requiring specific matching to achieve maximum radiation, as a minimum SWR at the transmitter does not always indicate resonance or maximum output. Tuning involves physical adjustment of antenna length to achieve resonance at the operating frequency. The _G3TSO_ page outlines a tuning procedure utilizing a low-power signal source and a field strength meter to identify maximum radiation before impedance matching. Loading coil placement, either at the base, center, or top of the antenna, influences radiation efficiency and mechanical stability for mobile installations. Centre-loaded whips, such as the Hustler design, offer a compromise between efficiency and stability, often for single-band operation. Helically wound antennas, including those for **28 MHz**, may present base impedances around 17 ohms, resulting in a 3:1 SWR at resonance. Low resistance grounding at the antenna base is also specified for optimizing performance and minimizing RFI during mobile operation. DXZone Focus: Mobile | Any | Antenna Tuning | HF

7MHz to 30MHz operation is achieved with a magnetic-mounted HF antenna designed for car roof deployment, capable of handling 100 Watts without an external antenna tuner. The design incorporates a large base-loading coil with multiple taps, allowing for frequency selection across various HF bands. This coil effectively increases the electrical length of a short telescopic antenna element, compensating for its inherent capacitance. Construction involves 3D-printed components for the coil former and support structures, though conventional building methods using plastic drainpipes are also suggested. The car body serves as the ground plane, with the coil assembly mounted on a 500mm square metal plate secured by super neodymium magnets. Protection under the magnets is advised to prevent vehicle scratches. Detailed instructions cover winding the 30-turn coil with 2.5mm diameter household electrical cable, assembling the 3D-printed parts, and making soldered connections. Taps are staggered every five turns for precise frequency adjustment. Performance examples include a 7913km contact to Japan using a 1.5m element and 100 Watts, demonstrating low-angle radiation and omni-directional pattern with minimal S-point loss compared to a full quarter-wave.
