KaWin is a legacy digital RF data communications program designed to harness the full potential of Kantronics Terminal Node Controllers (TNCs) via their proprietary Host Mode. Serving as a central hub for the digital shack, it gave operators running packet radio or DX clusters a native graphical interface to seamlessly manage RF traffic across up to four simultaneous TNCs. The primary limitation today is extreme software obsolescence. KaWin is a completely unsupported, discontinued product running exclusively on legacy operating systems, peaking at Windows 95. Modern shacks cannot run it natively; it strictly demands antiquated hardware like physical RS-232 serial ports with 16550 UARTs, dedicated IRQ assignments to prevent RX/TX buffer overruns, and specific legacy TNC firmware EPROMs. Despite being a relic, its benefits for the dedicated digital DXer were substantial. By fully exploiting Kantronics Host Mode rather than basic KISS configurations, it maximized on-the-air throughput and station efficiency. For retro-computing hams restoring vintage packet stations, KaWin still provides a robust environment that successfully bridged raw RF data routing with a highly functional, multitasking graphical user interface.

Introduction to packet radio and answers to common questions about this digital mode and about services you can use by VKFAQ

High Speed Multimedia (HSMM) radio, as introduced by John Champa, K8OCL, represents a significant advancement in amateur radio's digital capabilities, moving beyond traditional keyboard modes like packet radio. This initiative, driven by ARRL's Technology Task Force, focuses on developing high-speed digital radio networks capable of up to 20 megabits per second. HSMM primarily facilitates digital voice (DV) and digital video (ADV), enabling real-time video transmission from emergency scenes to an EOC without expensive ATV gear, often requiring only a laptop, a PCMCIA card, a digital camera, and a small antenna. The working group's initial efforts concentrate on cultivating microwave skills within the amateur community to build and support portable and fixed high-speed radio-based local networking, or **RLANs**. These networks prove invaluable for RACES and ARES organizations, as well as homeland security and other emergency communications. Field Day exercises and simulated emergency tests (SETs) are encouraged to hone skills in rapid site surveys and deploying broadband HSMM microwave radio networks, with examples like linking Field Day logging stations or antenna test results at the Midwest VHF-UHF Society Picnic 2003. Getting started with HSMM often involves adapting off-the-shelf **IEEE 802.11** (WiFi) equipment to comply with amateur radio regulations, typically operating in the 2.4 GHz ISM bands. While consumer WiFi gear has range limitations under Part 15 rules, proper setup under amateur regulations can extend coverage significantly, with test networks like the Hinternet achieving 5-15 mile ranges at 54 M bit/s using small mast-mounted dish antennas. Careful selection of equipment with external antenna ports, high transmit power, and low receive sensitivity is crucial, along with using low-loss coaxial cable like LMR-400 for optimal performance at these frequencies.

Ground Station offers real-time satellite tracking and radio communication capabilities, primarily for amateur radio operators engaged in satellite operations. It utilizes **TLE data** from sources like CelesTrak and SatNOGS for precise orbital prediction and integrates with various SDR devices, including RTL-SDR, SoapySDR, and UHD/USRP radios, to receive live signals. The software provides automated antenna rotator control and **Hamlib-compatible** rig control with Doppler correction, crucial for maintaining signal lock on fast-moving LEO satellites. It supports IQ recording in SigMF format and decodes several digital modes such as SSTV, FSK, GFSK, GMSK, and BPSK with AX25 USP Geoscan framing. Dedicated interfaces are available for satellite tracking, SDR waterfall displays with live transcription and packet decoding, and telemetry packet viewing. Users can manage TLE data synchronization and SDR hardware, along with browsing decoded outputs through an integrated file browser. An observations dashboard and DSP topology view further enhance the operational experience, providing comprehensive tools for monitoring and analyzing satellite passes.
