Sixty-four years of operating experience inform Glynn E. "Buck" Rogers Sr., K4ABT's, insights into the J-Pole antenna, which he describes as a direct descendant of the _Windom_ or _ZEPP_. His first article on the J-Pole appeared in HRC magazine in 1958, and he has since published numerous pieces in publications like CQ Magazine, consistently referring to the J-Pole as a Windom with a folded-back short section forming the parasitic element. He emphasizes that both the Windom and J-Pole are powerful multi-band antennas, performing exceptionally well at harmonics of their fundamental design frequency, and advocates for 50-ohm coaxial cable with a _BALUN_ at the feed-point to avoid RF energy losses. K4ABT details the J-Pole's features, noting its ease of erection, lack of radials, low angle radiation, greater bandwidth, and immunity to terrestrial noise. He highlights its suitability for local nets and distant repeaters, claiming more gain and durability than most ground planes, and its ability to meet stealth antenna requirements. The guide provides specific dimensions for 2-meter (145.000 to 146.000 MHz) and 6-meter (50.500 to 51.500 MHz) J-Pole antennas, including measurements for the long driven element, short tuning stub, and spacing. The construction section illustrates a modified feed technique using an SO-239 chassis-mount coax connector soldered into a copper tee, deviating from the usual hose clamp method. The author also discusses the use of _EMT_ (electrical metallic thin-wall conduit) as an alternative to copper in earlier days. He cautions against building a 75-meter J-Pole due to its impractical length, reinforcing the antenna's optimal application for VHF and UHF bands.

This resource provides fundamental guidelines for optimizing mobile amateur radio antenna installations. It addresses critical factors such as achieving an adequate ground plane, minimizing common mode current, and reducing ignition noise. Specific recommendations include mounting antennas on the vehicle's roof for superior radiation patterns and utilizing proper feedline routing to mitigate RF interference within the vehicle's electrical system. The content details the impact of antenna placement on Standing Wave Ratio (SWR) and overall radiated power, emphasizing the importance of a solid electrical connection to the vehicle chassis. It also discusses strategies for noise suppression, such as bonding body panels and employing ferrite chokes on power leads. The information presented is practical for hams seeking to improve their mobile station's efficiency and reduce RF-related operational issues.

Understanding the operational impact of Broadband over Power Line (BPL) on amateur radio communications is crucial for any radio amateur, especially given the potential for significant radio frequency interference (RFI). This ARRL tutorial delves into the technical aspects of BPL, explaining how the technology operates by transmitting data over existing electrical power lines, which can inadvertently radiate broadband noise across various amateur bands. My own field experience, particularly on the lower HF bands, has often involved tracking down noise sources that exhibit characteristics consistent with BPL emissions, making this a pertinent topic for maintaining clear receive conditions. The resource further details the specific FCC rules and regulations implemented to restrict BPL deployment. These regulations aim to protect licensed radio services, including amateur radio, from harmful interference. It outlines the technical standards and operational limitations imposed on BPL systems to minimize their impact on the electromagnetic spectrum, a critical aspect for contesters and DXers alike. For those engaged in RFI mitigation, the tutorial provides a foundational understanding of the regulatory framework that can be leveraged when addressing BPL-related interference issues. It serves as a valuable reference for hams seeking to comprehend the technical challenges and regulatory solutions surrounding this pervasive noise source.

Active antennas can be very useful, in particular they can help reduce local electrical noise by allowing the antenna to be installed in a corner of the garden well away from house wiring. The original PA0RDT antenna uses a very small patch for the antenna and relies on the antenna being installed quite high.

Understanding how radio frequency interference (RFI) is coupled into equipment and subsequently detected is crucial for amateur radio operators. This guide delves into the fundamental mechanisms of RFI, particularly focusing on detection at semiconductor junctions and the unintended antenna action of system wiring. It explains that most RFI detection follows a square law, meaning a 6 dB reduction in RF signal can result in a 12 dB drop in detected audio, offering a practical approach to mitigation. The resource also clarifies the concept of common mode versus differential mode signals, detailing how cable imperfections can convert common mode antenna current into differential signals. It addresses the critical "Pin 1 Problem" in audio interfacing, a common design flaw where cable shields connect to the circuit board instead of the shielding enclosure, leading to significant RFI issues. Practical solutions, such as proper shielding, using twisted-pair cables, and strategic bonding of equipment, are discussed to effectively reduce or eliminate RFI. The guide emphasizes the importance of proper filtering and the often-misunderstood concept of "ground" in electrical systems, distinguishing between earth ground, equipment ground, and circuit common. It provides insights into minimizing loop area in wiring to reduce inductively coupled noise and antenna action, drawing on the author's extensive engineering background and ham radio experience.
