Facilitates reliable two-way communication under challenging propagation conditions, WSJT-X provides a suite of digital modes optimized for weak-signal operation across the amateur bands. These modes, including FT8, FT4, and Q65, are designed to decode signals significantly below the noise floor, enabling DX contacts, EME (Earth-Moon-Earth), and meteor scatter QSOs with modest station setups. The software supports various T/R sequence lengths and tone spacings, tailored for specific propagation phenomena and band characteristics, such as JT9 for MF/HF with **2 dB** greater sensitivity than JT65, and MSK144 for VHF meteor scatter. WSJT-X also integrates specialized tools like _MAP65_ for wideband EME reception with polarization matching to counter _Faraday rotation_, and QMAP for wideband Q65 reception with Earth-Moon-Earth Doppler correction. These companion programs extend the software's capabilities for advanced weak-signal work, particularly on VHF, UHF, and microwave frequencies. The project, maintained by Joe Taylor, K1JT, and the WSJT Development Team, is the official home and reference implementation for these weak-signal digital communication protocols. Recent releases, such as _WSJT-X 3.0.2_, introduce enhancements like the QMAP program, Q65 Pileup, and SuperFox mode, which offers approximately **+10 dB** system gain for Fox-and-Hound operations.

Argo, developed by I2PHD and IK2CZL, functions as a specialized freeware viewer for various weak signal modes, specifically MTHELL, Slow CW, QRSS, and DFCW. It processes audio input to visualize and decode these extremely low-speed transmissions, which are often imperceptible to the human ear. The software's capabilities extend to EME (Earth-Moon-Earth) operations, where its sensitivity to weak signals is particularly advantageous for detecting faint lunar reflections. The application provides a visual representation of the received signals, allowing operators to discern patterns and decode information from signals buried deep within the noise floor. Its design focuses on extracting data from signals with very narrow bandwidths and long integration times, characteristic of QRSS and similar modes. This tool is distinctively useful for experimenters and DXers engaged in challenging weak signal communication, offering a dedicated platform for modes not typically supported by general-purpose digital mode software. Its specialized focus on _Slow CW_ and _MTHELL_ makes it a niche but effective utility for specific operating scenarios.

Deciphering weak or noisy **CW** (Continuous Wave) signals often presents a challenge for amateur radio operators, particularly in contest environments or during DXpeditions. CWLab04X addresses this by providing a software solution that leverages **DSP** (Digital Signal Processing) capabilities of a soundcard to decode Morse code. It functions as both a receiver and a sender, supporting traditional CW and a unique "CCW" mode designed to enhance copyability of signals struggling against high noise floors. The program offers two installation methods: a Windows-specific installer for straightforward setup or a zipped package compatible with Windows and Linux systems running Wine. Users must first download and review the accompanying PDF documentation, CWLab04.pdf and CWLab04_Hardware.pdf, which detail the software's operation and the necessary soundcard interface circuit. The hardware PDF outlines a direct connection from the receiver audio output to the soundcard input, with optional conversion of the soundcard output for hard-keying or microphone input. CWLab04X is intended as an operational aid rather than a replacement for skilled human copy, particularly highlighting the effectiveness of its CCW mode in adverse signal conditions. The software was last revised in April 2009, with installation requiring the LV Runtime 602.

The Receiver Test Data resource is a detailed review database focusing on the performance metrics of various radio receivers. The methodology involves rigorous lab measurements, often adhering to standards such as the ARRL RMDR (Reciprocal Mixing Dynamic Range) and BDR (Blocking Dynamic Range). Specific test equipment and protocols are utilized to assess parameters like noise floor (dBm), AGC threshold (uV), and LO noise (dBc/Hz). For example, the _Icom IC-7300_ is evaluated with a noise floor of **-133 dBm** and an LO noise of **-141 dBc/Hz**, providing insights into its performance under different operational conditions. The resource includes a wide range of models, from the _Elecraft K3S_ to the _Yaesu FTdx-101D_, each tested for dynamic range, sensitivity, and selectivity. The data is sorted by key metrics such as third-order dynamic range and phase noise limitations, with RMDR values calculated by subtracting 27 dB from LO noise figures. This structured approach allows users to compare different receivers' capabilities, focusing on technical specifications and performance outcomes in various scenarios. 137 kHz propagation analysis details ground wave and sky wave mechanisms, drawing heavily from **CCIR Rec. 368-6** for ground wave field strength predictions and **CCIR Rep. 265-7** for sky wave modeling. The resource presents field strength values for 1 W ERP at varying distances, considering ground conductivity and permittivity for ground wave, and ionospheric height (70km daytime, 90km nighttime) for sky wave. Key factors like ionospheric focusing (factor "D"), reflection coefficient ("RC"), and antenna ground pattern factors ("Ft", "Fr") are quantified for 137 kHz, enabling calculation of sky wave field strength. Practical coverage ranges are derived for 137 kHz, showing useful ground wave coverage up to 1600 km over seawater and 1100 km over average ground, assuming a -9 dBuV/m noise floor. Sky wave coverage extends beyond 2200 km during night-time and winter daytime, but is negligible during summer daytime at solar minimum. The document also compares ground wave and sky wave strengths, identifying crossover distances at 550 km (night-time), 750 km (winter daytime), and 1250 km (summer daytime), where interference fading can occur. Adjustments for solar maximum conditions are provided, indicating 2-11 dB higher sky wave values depending on distance and season.

Monitoring extremely weak signals in the QRSS (Very Slow Morse) mode requires specialized receiving and processing capabilities to extract information below the typical noise floor. This project provides a software solution, _QrssPiG_, designed to run on a Raspberry Pi, enabling it to function as a dedicated QRSS grabber. It interfaces with various Software Defined Radio (SDR) devices, including the popular _rtl-sdr_ dongles and _HackRF_ units, to acquire raw I/Q data streams. The software then performs the necessary signal processing to visualize and decode these faint, long-duration CW transmissions, often operating with milliwatts of power. The system leverages the computational power of the Raspberry Pi for real-time signal analysis, allowing hams to participate in QRSS experiments and monitor distant beacons. It supports different SDR hardware, offering flexibility in setup and deployment for home stations or remote monitoring sites. The project includes detailed instructions for installation and configuration, making it accessible for those familiar with Linux environments. This grabber is particularly useful for tracking propagation on the LF and HF bands where QRSS activity is common, providing a visual representation of signal presence over extended periods.

The "Beginner’s Guide to Small-station EME" by Paul Bock, K4MSG, offers an insightful look into Earth-Moon-Earth communication, a fascinating aspect of VHF and above amateur radio. This presentation demystifies moonbounce, explaining how two-way radio contacts are made by reflecting signals off the Moon. K4MSG highlights the historical context of EME, noting the substantial investment and technical challenges that once characterized these operations, often requiring setups like the W5UN "Mighty Big Array" (MBA). Historically, path loss exceeding 250 dB, spatial polarization offset, Faraday rotation, and galactic noise made EME a formidable pursuit, with CW being the mode of choice for signals that had to be audibly detectable. Equipment limitations in noise figure and coax performance further compounded the difficulty for early moonbouncers. However, the landscape of amateur EME dramatically shifted around 2003 with the introduction of the JT65 software. This innovation, specifically designed for EME, allowed for signal decoding well below the noise floor, making small-station EME a practical reality for more hams using common transceivers and less complex antenna systems.

Demonstrates the application of Software-Defined Radios (SDRs) as effective tools for conducting Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) site surveys. The resource details the methodology for capturing and analyzing RFI, specifically focusing on the 80-meter band over a 24-hour period. It outlines the setup of an SDR-based survey tool, utilizing software like _S-Meter Lite_ and _Spectrum Lab_ to visualize and quantify noise sources. The article emphasizes the SDR's wideband capabilities, which allow for comprehensive identification and documentation of RFI across broad frequency ranges, crucial for effective mitigation strategies. The analysis presents practical results, illustrating how continuous monitoring can reveal intermittent RFI sources that might otherwise go undetected. For instance, the survey identified noise peaks exceeding **S9+20dB** on 80 meters during specific hours, correlating with local appliance usage. The methodology provides a repeatable process for hams to characterize their local noise floor, enabling targeted RFI suppression efforts and improving weak-signal reception, particularly for DXing and contesting.

The Olivia digital mode, a **Multi-Frequency Shift Keying (MFSK)** radioteletype protocol, is specifically engineered for robust communication under difficult propagation conditions on shortwave radio bands from 3 MHz to 30 MHz. Developed by Pawel Jalocha in 2003, Olivia signals can be decoded even when the noise amplitude exceeds the digital signal by over ten times, making it highly effective for transmitting ASCII characters across noisy channels with significant fading and propagation phasing. Early on-the-air tests by Fred OH/DK4ZC and Les VK2DSG on the Europe-Australia 20-meter path demonstrated intercontinental contacts with as little as one-watt RF power under favorable conditions. Common Olivia modes are designated as X/Y, where X represents the number of tones and Y is the bandwidth in Hertz, with examples including 8/250, 16/500, and 32/1000. The resource clarifies that Olivia, unlike some other digital modes, produces a constant envelope, allowing RF power amplifiers to achieve greater conversion efficiencies and making it less prone to non-linearity. Operators are advised that **Automatic Level Control (ALC)** can be set higher than no meter movement for MFSK modulation, as long as it's not driven past its high limit, contrary to common misinformation about other digital modes. The Olivia community encourages voluntary channelization on suggested calling frequencies, such as 14.0725 MHz for 8/250, to facilitate initial contacts, especially for signals below the noise floor. The Olivia Digital DXers Club provides links to Groups.io, Facebook, and Discord for community engagement and offers details on QSO parties.
