Operating on the 146.880 MHz repeater, the Inland Empire VHF Radio Amateurs (IEVHFRA) hosts a weekly net, providing a consistent on-air gathering for amateurs within Eastern Washington and Spokane County. My experience with similar regional VHF nets confirms their value in fostering local ham radio community and sharing information, often covering topics from equipment troubleshooting to upcoming hamfests. The club, active for over **50 years**, also organizes the _Inland Empire VHF Tailgate Swap_, an event featuring vendors, emergency communication demonstrations by Spokane ARES-ACS, and POTA/SOTA activity setups. Such events are crucial for hands-on learning and direct interaction, which I've found invaluable for new licensees and seasoned operators alike. Beyond on-air activities and events, IEVHFRA supports the hobby through amateur radio classes and testing, facilitating new license acquisition and upgrades. They also maintain an online messaging group for members, ensuring continuous communication and information exchange.

1.5 dB of matched line loss can be calculated for a given transmission line using this online tool, which employs a model calibrated from empirical data. The calculator allows radio amateurs to input specific transmission line types, such as _RG-8_ or _RG-58_, and then determine the expected signal attenuation. This is crucial for optimizing antenna system efficiency and understanding power delivery to the radiating element, especially for HF and VHF operations where feedline losses can significantly impact performance. Beyond matched loss, the calculator also provides an estimate for mismatched loss if the Standing Wave Ratio (SWR) is specified. This feature helps operators quantify the additional power loss due to impedance discontinuities between the transceiver, feedline, and antenna, which is a common concern in amateur radio installations. Accurate loss calculations are vital for effective station design and for predicting actual radiated power. The tool's utility extends to various operating scenarios, from fixed station setups to portable deployments, aiding in the selection of appropriate feedline lengths and types to minimize signal degradation. Understanding these losses is a fundamental aspect of maximizing the effectiveness of any amateur radio antenna system.

This antenna was conceived mainly for high-speed digital transmission via satellite. The antenna is made of two full waves loops , mounted at right angles to each other. Then coupled together, 90 degrees out of phase over a horizontal circular reflector. With this configuration the antenna is omni directional and circularly polarized.

A distance of 1/8 lambda between the antenna and the vehicle roof is suggested for optimal performance, with slight adjustments possible to lower the take-off angle for terrestrial contacts. This resource details the adaptation of an _Eggbeater_ antenna for mobile use, specifically for VHF operation, leveraging the car's metal roof as a ground plane. It illustrates the mounting method, repurposing a magnetic ski carrier base, and describes the integration of coaxial relays for polarization reversal, a feature also applicable to UHF versions as discussed in "_Eggbeater Antenna VHF/UHF – Part 2_". This mobile configuration proves effective for satellite communications, such as through the International Space Station (ISS), while also maintaining strong performance for land-based radio contacts. The inclusion of switches with indicator lights for VHF and UHF polarization control, powered by the vehicle's battery, highlights practical considerations for field deployment. The system's adaptability for portable operations underscores its versatility beyond fixed mobile installations.

The HB9CV antenna calculator aids amateur radio enthusiasts in designing antennas for VHF and UHF bands. By inputting the working frequency, users can obtain crucial dimensions like dipole lengths and distances. The tool, based on the HFSS antenna model, provides data on impedance, VSWR, and gain, optimizing front/back radiation ratios. It includes tips for fine-tuning using a Г-matching balun and compensating capacitor, ensuring effective performance and minimal VSWR for enhanced radio communications and direction finding.

Monitoring radio communications through web-accessible Software Defined Radios (SDRs) has become a popular facet of the hobby, and Receiverbook serves as a centralized directory for locating these remote assets. The platform aggregates listings for both **OpenWebRX+** and **KiwiSDR** installations, providing a gateway to a diverse array of frequencies and operating modes. My own experience with similar directories highlights their utility for casual listening, DXing, and even troubleshooting local RFI by comparing signals across different geographic locations. The directory details specific receiver locations, from Bedford, England, to Marahau, New Zealand, and Berlin, Germany. Each entry often specifies the supported frequency ranges, which can span LF, MF, HF, VHF, and UHF bands, including dedicated segments like 80m, 40m, 2m, and 70cm. Many listings explicitly note support for HAM radio, broadcast services, and public two-way radio, making it a versatile tool for various listening interests. Beyond general frequency coverage, some entries provide granular details about the underlying hardware, such as the **SDRPlay RSP1A** or RTL-SDR Blog V3, and even the antenna types employed, like the Sirio Gain-Master. This level of detail is invaluable for serious SWLs and hams looking to understand the capabilities and limitations of a particular remote receiver before tuning in.

Presents an interactive online **Moxon antenna designer** tool, enabling radio amateurs to configure and analyze lightweight Moxon antennas for HF and VHF bands. Users can specify design frequency, element lengths, wire diameter, insulation, and support height. The tool visualizes the antenna in interactive 3D graphics and generates comprehensive performance charts, including azimuth, elevation, 3D, and polarization radiation patterns, VSWR charts, antenna current diagrams, and Smith charts. It also allows selection of various ground types (e.g., very poor soil, salt water, free space) to model environmental effects on antenna performance. The designer provides insights into how physical dimensions and ground conditions influence key antenna parameters like forward gain, front-to-back ratio, and feed-point impedance, which is typically close to 50 ohms. It also includes a feature to model the effect of coaxial cable losses on **VSWR** at the transmitter end, distinguishing it from the feed-point VSWR. This helps operators understand the actual radiated power efficiency versus the apparent match at the transceiver, offering a practical perspective on antenna system performance in portable operations.

A 5/8 λ antenna, often thought to be ideal for all frequencies, has unique characteristics that don't universally apply. First introduced for medium-wave radio, it works optimally at 225° antenna length over ideal ground, yielding high efficiency. However, at VHF and higher frequencies, it offers no advantage over other antennas due to real ground conditions and complex matching requirements. DIY calculators provide only rough estimates, useful as a starting point for simulations, not for precise builds.
