Constructing a double bazooka antenna for the UHF band, specifically tuned for 435 MHz, involves a straightforward process detailed with step-by-step imagery. The design leverages readily available _RG213 coaxial cable_, cut to precise lengths derived from formulas: 140.208 / F (MHz) for the radiating element and 99.06 / F (MHz) for the coaxial section. This approach yields a highly effective vertical polarization antenna, suitable for local ragchewing or repeater access. My own field experience with similar coaxial designs confirms their robustness and ease of deployment. The article emphasizes critical steps like short-circuiting cable extremities, interrupting the braid at the center, and securing an insulating support. It also covers preparing the definitive mounting with a quality feedline, noting that RG58 is acceptable for temporary use but better options exist for permanent installations. Weatherproofing is crucial for longevity, achieved through PVC electrician's tube, glue, and heat-shrink tubing. The final assembly is designed for mounting on a small aluminum mast, with the feedline routed internally. The reported SWR measurement is very satisfactory, showing approximately **+/- 3%** HF return, indicating excellent impedance matching at the target frequency.

This page allows hams to design a vertical-plane delta-loop antenna for a single amateur HF band in different configurations. By choosing different feed-point positions, operators can observe variations in polarization properties, radiation patterns, and feed-point impedances. Users can generate radiation pattern plots, VSWR charts, antenna current diagrams, and Smith charts for their antennas over various ground types. Through adjusting the antenna's physical dimensions and refreshing the plots, hams can gain insights into the antenna's performance in the field. The page also discusses how elevation radiation patterns may change based on the antenna configuration and feed-point position.

Learn how to design a Hentenna antenna, a portable asymmetrical double-loop antenna ideal for amateur HF or VHF bands. This page provides details on constructing and optimizing the antenna for maximum performance in DX communications. Discover how altering the antenna's vertical feed section can adjust the VSWR resonant frequency and how changing the support pole's position can alter the beam direction. Originally developed by Japanese 6-meter operators, the 'Hentenna' offers a unique design that allows for horizontal polarization when vertically oriented. Explore radiation patterns, VSWR charts, and antenna currents diagrams to optimize your antenna's performance for long-distance contacts.

A vertical delta loop is a practical antenna for low bands, popular for its simple design requiring just one support. Its shape, an equilateral triangle in free space, yields optimal gain and radiation resistance. Deviating from this shape lowers performance. The delta loop can be polarized either horizontally or vertically based on the feed point location. In vertical polarization, it acts as two quarter-wave verticals with the baseline feeding one side. This design minimizes radiation from the baseline while maintaining effective operation.

Delta loop antennas, particularly the 30 meter variant, offer unique advantages in terms of vertical polarization and omni-directional coverage. The construction process detailed by VE3VN highlights common mechanical and electrical challenges faced by amateur radio operators. Key design considerations include minimizing interaction with existing contest band antennas, achieving low elevation angles for DX chasing, and ensuring the antenna remains off the ground for agricultural clearance. The article provides specific measurements, such as the loop's height and feed point impedance, which are critical for optimizing performance. The use of NEC modeling software illustrates the importance of accurate resonance calculations, revealing how proximity to the tower affects both pattern and impedance. This practical account serves as a resource for hams looking to build effective antennas while navigating typical construction hurdles.

A detailed guide presents a simple 2-element quad antenna for 2m, offering ease of construction, portability, and efficient performance across the 144-148 MHz band. The design allows quick disassembly for storage and features adjustable polarization, making it ideal for various applications, including transmitter hunting and SSB operations.

Testing of real antennas is fundamental to antenna theory. The most common and desired measurements are the antenna radiation pattern including antenna gain and efficiency, the impedance or VSWR, the bandwidth, and the polarization. The procedures and equipment used in antenna measurements are described in this page.

Operating amateur radio satellites presents unique challenges, particularly concerning antenna design and signal propagation. Juan Antonio Fernández Montaña, EA4CYQ, recounts his three-year journey into satellite communication, starting with initial guidance from EB4DKA. His early experiments involved a portable 1/4 wave VHF antenna with four 1/4 wave ground planes, designed for hand-held use to adjust polarity. This setup, paired with an FT-3000M transceiver, allowed full-duplex operation on **VHF** transmit and **UHF** receive, proving effective for early contacts on satellites like AO27, UO14, and SO35. EA4CYQ's experience highlights the critical role of coaxial cable loss and antenna polarization. After encountering significant signal degradation with longer RG213 runs, he experimented with a 1/2 inch commercial cable, noting improved reception but persistent fading due to varying satellite polarities. This led to the construction of an **Eggbeater II** antenna, an omnidirectional UHF design offering horizontal polarization at the horizon and circular right polarization at higher elevation angles. Subsequent modifications resulted in the directional **TPM2** antenna, which provided sufficient gain for LEO satellites with a wide 30-degree lobe, enabling consistent contacts from his home station. The article concludes with practical insights on the performance of the Eggbeater II for both UHF and VHF, and the TPM2 for UHF, emphasizing their utility for portable and fixed operations. EA4CYQ's journey underscores the iterative process of antenna development and the importance of adapting designs to overcome real-world propagation challenges in satellite communications.

This project describes a high-performance EME antenna array consisting of two home-designed 9-element Yagis, each about 2.5 wavelengths long, combined into a 25-ohm system and matched to 100 ohms using 9/4λ sections of 50-ohm coax. The array supports rotatable polarity from 0° to 180°, allowing both horizontal and vertical polarization to optimize moonbounce performance under varying conditions. Despite operating for years without a balun—something another designer called “disastrous”—the system has delivered strong results, including copying very weak DX such as VK3KH at about -25 dB with only 120 W (around 2 kW ERP). The builder continues to refine the mechanics, having installed new gear motors and an upgraded follow-up control system in 2011.
