A system designed to automatically tune small transmitting magnetic loop antennas, particularly beneficial for **contest operations** where rapid frequency changes are common. The core of the system involves a PC-based control application, AutoCap, written in C#, which monitors antenna SWR via an external meter and commands a motor interface to adjust the loop's variable capacitor. The software is compatible with Windows and Linux via the Mono framework, offering a graphical user interface for monitoring system status, SWR, power, and motor commands. Key components include one or more magnetic loop antennas equipped with DC or stepper motors for capacitor adjustment, an SWR meter with data output (such as the Telepost LP-100A or a homebrew serial/USB SWR meter), the AutoCap PC software, and a motor interface. The most effective motor interface utilizes an **Arduino-based controller** with custom firmware, providing precise control over both simple DC motors and stepper motors, and supporting features like motor braking for finer adjustments. The system allows for configurable SWR thresholds, pulse widths, and motor effort settings to optimize tuning speed and resolution. Optional radio integration provides frequency hints, enabling the algorithm to learn the relationship between motor actions and resonant frequency, thereby speeding up initial tuning responses. The software also supports antenna profiles, allowing operators to save and recall specific configurations for different loops, including accumulated frequency hint data.

DL7JV shares his practical experience building and testing capacitive antennas, initially skeptical of their performance compared to magnetic loops and mono-band dipoles. His interest was piqued after hearing a Spanish station running 100 Watts on 80 meters with a 1-meter Micro Vert, making DX contacts into PY and UA0, despite the antenna being only 4 meters high in a garden. This prompted DL7JV to investigate further, consulting resources from DL7PE and DL7AHW, the latter providing DOS programs like "Mitspule.exe" and "Spulenprg.zip" for calculating antenna dimensions and coil conversions. The article outlines the construction of two prototype antennas: one for 7.050 MHz using a 75mm PVC pipe and another for 3.550 MHz with a 110mm PVC pipe. Both designs feature aluminum foil condensers and coils wound from 1mm² H07V-K wire. DL7JV provides specific measurements for the condenser capacitance, surface area, diameter, height, coil inductance, turns, and wire length for both 40m and 80m versions, along with RG58 feedline lengths. Initial reception tests for the 7 MHz antenna, placed indoors, yielded impressive S9+5 signals from a German station compared to an S8 from a 42-meter roof-mounted loop, even hearing a Japanese station. Transmission attempts on April 4, 2004, despite moderate solar storm conditions, resulted in successful QSOs on 7 MHz with EA5OT (579/559) and on 3.5 MHz with YT1NT (579/559) and G4KKI (579/559) using 100 Watts. DL7JV notes the antenna's sensitivity to coordination and feedline layout, suggesting a modification from DL7AXO involving a 500pF fixed capacitor and coil tap for improved SWR stability. He concludes that while the capacitive antenna is space-saving and performs well for reception and 100W transmission indoors, its transmit performance doesn't yet match larger antennas, with further outdoor field tests planned. DL7JV also intends to build a 1.8 MHz version.

Initially intended in a restricted location, the system has been developed through numerous iterations, using various antenna types such as delta loops and Yagis. Automatic switching, dual-direction capability, and optimum tuning for certain band segments are among the most notable features. The project not only improves operating efficiency but also provides great learning opportunities in antenna design and installation in restricted places.

Integrating a _Software Defined Radio_ (SDR) into an existing ham radio setup involves connecting it with a standard transceiver (TRX), power amplifier (PA), and antennas. The core component is a splitter box that facilitates the connection between the TRX and the SDR, allowing for simultaneous operation without modifying existing equipment. In receive mode, the splitter ties the antenna inputs of both the TRX and a direct conversion receiver (DC RX) together. During transmission, the DC RX input is grounded via a fast telecom relay controlled by the transceiver's -SEND signal, incorporating a 10ms delay for safety. The splitter box includes a 3.7 dB input attenuator for impedance matching and acts as a protective fuse for the DC RX input. Ground loops are mitigated using common mode balun transformers, while the DC RX input is insulated with a broadband transformer. An audio switch box complements the setup, enabling users to listen to either the main transceiver, the SDR output, or both simultaneously. This configuration ensures noise immunity and safety, with the splitter housed in a screened box made from PCB material. On-air tests, such as the CQ WW 160m CW DX Contest, demonstrate the system's effectiveness, showcasing the SDR's ability to handle crowded band conditions with superior selectivity and dynamic range. The SDR's narrow bandwidth filters and waterfall display provide significant advantages, allowing operators to detect weak signals amidst strong interference. The integration of SDR with conventional radios offers enhanced operational flexibility and performance in challenging environments.

Chavdar Levkov, LZ1AQ, presents an experimental comparison of small wideband magnetic loops, building on his previous work on wideband active small magnetic loop antennas. His research focuses on increasing loop sensitivity by maximizing the short-circuit current, which is directly tied to the "loop factor" M = A/L, where A is the equivalent loop area and L is its inductance. Levkov's methodology involves reducing inductance and increasing area through parallel or coplanar crossed (CC) configurations, comparing these designs against a reference single quad loop of 1 m2 area. Experimental verification included testing three distinct loop types: a simple quad loop, two coplanar crossed (CC) loops, and eight parallel loops, all designed to have a total geometric area of 1 m2. Measurements were conducted at 1.8, 3.5, 7, and 10 MHz using a small transmitter 270 meters away, with a Perseus direct sampling receiver for precise signal level assessment. The results consistently showed that CC loops, particularly Loop 5 (two CC circular loops with 1.44 m2 total area), yielded significantly higher currents, up to 9.1 dB over the reference loop at 3.5 MHz, validating M as a reliable predictor of loop sensitivity. Numerical simulations using MMANA further corroborated the experimental findings, demonstrating an almost perfect correlation between the calculated M factor and the induced loop current for 15 different loop models. Levkov concludes that CC loops offer superior sensitivity for a given loop area, while parallel loops are advantageous for minimizing physical volume. Practical recommendations suggest using loops with an M factor greater than 0.5 uA/pT for quiet rural environments, and he provides a spreadsheet tool, WLoop_calc.xls, to aid in optimizing loop configurations for specific operational needs.

Designing a collapsible 6-meter beam antenna involves careful consideration of element geometry and feedline matching, as demonstrated by VE3SMA's project. The construction draws inspiration from foldable dipole concepts and established wire beam designs like the Penn. State 40m beam and the DJ4SA Spiderbeam. Utilizing **4NEC2 modeling**, the author optimized element lengths for gain and bandwidth, observing the impact of end loops on resonant frequency and the need for compensation. Feeding the approximately 25-ohm balanced antenna with 50-ohm unbalanced cable required a specialized network. This setup incorporates a choke **balun** and a matching section built from two series quarter-wave transformers using readily available 75-ohm cable. On-the-air results validate the design, including a successful 1st double hop Es QSO with 10 Watts and satisfactory performance in the CW WW VHF Contest from FN05, where 41 grids were worked with 100 Watts, showing improved performance over a simple dipole.
