A self-supporting vertical antenna design for stationary-mobile HF-VHF operation is presented, emphasizing ease of construction with common materials like a fiberglass fishing rod and PVC pipe. The design focuses on creating a set of no-tuner monoband radiators for bands such as **2m**, **6m**, 10m, and 12m, with an overall radiator support length of 3.3m. The construction process details the assembly of the antenna base using a magnetic mount, PL-259 connector, and PVC pipe sections, which then supports the telescopic fishing rod. Radiator extensions are cut to achieve quarter-wave resonance on specific bands, with detailed instructions for 6m (50-51 MHz), 10m (28.5 MHz), and 12m (24.9 MHz). For lower HF bands like 15m, 17m, and 20m, the design incorporates base-loading coils, with specific turn counts provided (e.g., 21 turns for 20m). The project also suggests using an _antenna analyzer_ for precise tuning of extensions and coils, moving beyond theoretical values to achieve optimal performance. The author, _IK1ZYW_, notes that for 80m and 160m, the antenna becomes less efficient as a vertical, suggesting alternative configurations like an inverted-V dipole or asymmetrical inverted-L.

Constructing a **reduced-size coaxial Moxon rectangle** antenna for the 17-meter band is detailed, presenting a method to achieve a compact directional antenna. The resource outlines the use of RG-58/U coaxial cable for elements, enabling a substantial reduction in physical dimensions compared to traditional wire or tubing Moxon designs. It provides specific instructions for tuning coaxial elements using an **MFJ-259B antenna analyzer**, including a formula to calculate trimming lengths based on measured resonance and desired frequency. The article explains how to prepare the coaxial cable for both driven and reflector elements, specifying connections for testing and final assembly. Performance data from an MFJ-259B shows SWR readings between 1.0 and 1.2 across 18.068 MHz to 18.168 MHz, with R values from 51 to 59 ohms and X values of 0 or 6 ohms. The antenna's power handling is approximately 500 watts continuous, limited by the RG-58/U coax. Comparative receive testing against an All-Band Sterba Curtain at 50 feet indicated a 2 S-unit reduction for the coaxial Moxon at 9 feet, suggesting optimal performance at a height of 34-40 feet for a 15-18 degree take-off angle. The design achieves an electrical quarter wavelength with over 30 percent size reduction.

A **mobile HF multiband antenna** project details the construction of a center and top-loaded design, optimized for 10 through 80 meters. This antenna incorporates a capacity hat positioned high on the whip for enhanced efficiency, differing from commercial bugcatcher designs. The coil construction prioritizes high Q and minimal loss through an air core, open spacing, and heavy gauge wire, contributing to its lightweight nature and suitability for portable operation with a proper counterpoise. Band switching is achieved by manually moving a jumper plug to various tap points on the coil, allowing for operation across multiple bands, with 17m being resonant when the coil is bypassed. The design, a result of nine months of experimentation by N1LO, includes detailed instructions for modifying a Hamstick antenna base, creating a jumper wire, and assembling the capacity hat using stainless steel wire and silver-bearing solder for robust connections. The loading coil utilizes nylon grommet strips around a PVC pipe for an air-core winding, ensuring high efficiency. Tap sockets are fashioned from silver-plated 5-way binding posts, providing low-resistance RF joints for band selection. Guidance on tap point determination emphasizes using an antenna analyzer like the MFJ 259B or 269 to achieve resonance, especially on 40m and 80m where feedpoint resistance can be low. The document also covers the installation of monofilament stays to maintain antenna uprightness at highway speeds, with specific attachment points for stability.

The document also describes the integration of a coax capacitor, whose length is critical for tuning and varies by band, with specific starting lengths provided for 20m, 17m, 15m, 12m, and 10m operation. The practical application section guides the builder through tuning the antenna using an antenna analyzer, emphasizing the iterative process of spacing secondary windings and trimming the coax capacitor to achieve resonance at the desired band frequency. It highlights the antenna's low angle of radiation, beneficial for DX, and claims up to 2 S-points improvement over a _G5RV_ or similar doublet when used as an omnidirectional vertical. A comprehensive shopping list, including specific part numbers from _Rapid Electronics_, is provided, along with advice on selecting fiberglass fishing poles for support and suitable antenna wire.

An experimental antenna, similar to the _TAK spiral antenna_, was evaluated for SWR response over the 7.0 to 7.3 MHz frequency range. The analysis presents specific results: beam length significantly affects SWR, with increased distance between spirals raising the resonant frequency; the combined length of antenna and hookup wire lowers the resonant frequency as it increases; and spiral diameter impacts bandwidth, with larger diameters yielding greater bandwidth. The design addresses the fixed beam length limitation of the commercial TAK antenna by introducing an adjustable version constructed primarily from PVC electrical conduit and water pipe, using 14-gauge aluminum wire. The resource includes a detailed mechanical design, construction steps, and a parts list. It also features a spiral antenna spreadsheet model for calculating design parameters like start point, pitch, safe edge, spoke length, and arm length, which aids in determining wire length and kerf cutting tables. Model verification involved constructing an antenna to specific parameters, with SWR tests conducted using an _MFJ Model 269_ antenna analyzer at 13 feet above ground with 60 feet of RG8 mini coax. Measurements showed that adjusting beam length from 27 to 37 inches shifted the resonant frequency by approximately 0.18 MHz. Further data compares 32-inch versus 48-inch diameter spirals, demonstrating increased bandwidth for the larger diameter. The model accurately predicted revolutions for given antenna lengths, pitch, and starting distances. The final design achieved a resonant frequency of 7.17 MHz, favoring the voice portion of the 40-meter band after adjustments.

It outlines a practical tuning method using an SWR bridge and even an audible signal approach, emphasizing careful adjustment of coil turn spacing or whip length to achieve optimal SWR. The resource also mentions the use of an antenna analyzer for more precise tuning, contrasting it with the SWR method.

One specific challenge in the KazShack, operating Single Operator Two Radios (SO2R), involved sharing a K9AY receive antenna between two transceivers without direct RF connection or manual feedline swapping. The solution, detailed in this project, adapts the **W3LPL RX bandpass filter** design to split 160m and 80m signals, feeding them to separate radio inputs while maintaining isolation. This approach also addresses the issue of strong broadcast band interference from a nearby 50KW WPTF transmitter on 680kc. The construction utilizes T-50-3 toroids and NP0 ceramic capacitors, built in a "dead bug" style on copper clad board. Each band's filter coils are identical and resonated to the desired frequency using an MFJ-259 antenna analyzer. A single DPDT relay, controlled by a remote toggle switch mounted on an aluminum panel, facilitates quick band switching between radios, simplifying low-band operations. While some signal loss is noted, the expected lower noise levels from the receive antenna are anticipated to compensate, potentially reducing the need for constant volume adjustments during toggling between transmit and receive antennas.

The ZS6BKW antenna, a popular multiband wire antenna, offers improved band matching compared to the traditional G5RV. This construction guide details the process, beginning with specific dimensions: 13.11 meters (43 feet) for the 450-ohm ladder line and initial dipole arm lengths of approximately 14.8 meters each. It emphasizes the critical role of an _antenna analyzer_ for accurate tuning, particularly for determining the velocity factor of the ladder line and achieving a 1:1 impedance match. The article outlines the materials required, including a 1:1 current balun, 450-ohm window line, wire for the dipole arms, and a 50-ohm non-inductive resistor for testing. It provides a step-by-step procedure for cutting the ladder line to its electrical half-wavelength, explaining how to calculate the velocity factor using measured and free-space frequencies. For instance, a measured 50-ohm impedance at 12.54 MHz with a calculated free-space half-wavelength frequency of 11.44 MHz yields a velocity factor of 0.91. Final adjustments involve hoisting the antenna to its operational height and fine-tuning the dipole arm lengths to achieve optimal SWR, specifically targeting 14.200 MHz. The _ZS6BKW_ design is noted for its performance on 80m, 40m, 20m, 10m, and 6m, though it is not optimized for 15m operation. The author, _VK4MDX_, shares practical tips for durable construction using stainless steel wire and cable clamps.

How correctly tune an EH antenna using an antenna analyzer

Accurately determining an antenna's feedpoint impedance is crucial for optimal performance, especially when experimenting with new designs or making adjustments. While SWR meters provide basic information, a full complex impedance measurement reveals the resistive and reactive components, which are essential for proper matching. Modern antenna analyzers, like the _Palstar ZM30_ or MFJ259B, simplify this task, but measurements taken through a transmission line require careful interpretation due to impedance transformation. This resource details a calibration method to precisely account for the effects of the feedline. It explains how a transmission line can significantly alter the measured impedance, illustrating this phenomenon with a Smith Chart example where an 80m antenna's [22 + j6] Ohms feedpoint impedance transforms to [82 + j45] Ohms after a 10m line. The guide demonstrates using a transmission line calculator applet, such as the one by W9CF, to reverse this transformation. It outlines the process of calibrating a specific length of RG174 coax, showing how an initial 26ft estimate was refined to **25.85ft** to accurately predict a known 22 Ohm load, significantly improving accuracy over uncalibrated results.
