It details how the antenna's small size and distinctive far-field pattern, typically associated with HF, can be effectively utilized on VHF. The resource provides modeled dimensions for three different element diameters (1/4", 1/2", 1") and discusses the necessary adjustments to maintain optimal performance, such as gap spacing and element lengths, to achieve a 50-Ohm feedpoint impedance. The article presents predicted performance data, including gain (dBi), front-to-back ratio (dB), and feedpoint impedance (R, jX) across 144, 146, and 148 MHz. It analyzes free-space azimuth patterns and discusses the antenna's behavior when horizontally and vertically polarized over ground, including its suitability for fixed installations, repeater applications, and even satellite communications. Construction considerations, such as bending elements and maintaining critical gap distances, are also addressed. Furthermore, the content explores advanced configurations like using two back-to-back rectangles for broader coverage and a crossed-Moxon setup for circular polarization, suggesting potential for urban communication and satellite work. The author, _L. B. Cebik, W4RNL_, emphasizes the Moxon's strengths in broad bandwidth, wide beamwidth, and high front-to-back ratio, rather than maximum gain.

The 20-meter homebrew **Moxon antenna** project by 9Y4DD, Dave, details the construction of a 14 MHz directional antenna using readily available and repurposed materials. Initial SWR readings at 6 feet were 1.2 at 14.000 MHz, 1.4 at 14.350 MHz, and 1.1 at 14.175 MHz, with a subsequent increase of 0.1 on all frequencies when raised to 15 feet. The design adheres to specifications provided by L.B. Cebik (W4RNL). Key components include a discarded domestic water pump pressure tank as the center mounting bracket, 1/2-inch PVC conduit for spreaders, and 1/2-inch CPVC hot water pipe inserts to enhance rigidity. The total weight of the antenna is 12.625 pounds, with a material cost of U.S.$36.63. The spreaders are 165 inches from the center, utilizing 2.5mm sq. stranded copper wire for the elements. Dave's design incorporates hexagonal 'spider webs' of waxed twine to stabilize the flexible PVC spreaders, addressing initial issues with wind-induced movement. Separators cut from 3/16-inch Plexiglas maintain an 8.6-inch element spacing. The antenna demonstrated effective DX contacts with Europe from Trinidad, showing improved noise reduction compared to an inverted V.

Presents a detailed construction guide for a 2-element _Moxon rectangle_ antenna optimized for the 10-meter band, designed by L. B. Cebik, W4RNL (SK). This resource demonstrates how to build a compact beam antenna using readily available hardware store aluminum tubing, fitting within a 12-13 foot width. It highlights the antenna's performance characteristics, including a gain comparable to a 2-element Yagi (11+ dBi) and a front-to-back ratio exceeding 20 dB between 28.3 and 28.5 MHz, with an SWR below 2:1 across the entire band. The design emphasizes direct 50-ohm coax connection without a separate matching system, though a 1:1 choke _balun_ is recommended. The guide provides practical advice on element construction, corner fabrication using L-stock or radius-bent tubing, and the critical side-to-side length adjustment for SWR optimization. It details the feedpoint assembly using a chassis-mounting coax connector and discusses element-to-boom plate options, including spar varnished plywood or LE plastic. The author's experience with a test model on a 20-foot mast confirms stable feedpoint characteristics and excellent performance even at lower heights. The document also includes insights into the antenna's free-space azimuth patterns, noting a broad forward lobe and significant front-to-back rejection. It contrasts the Moxon with traditional Yagis, positioning it as an effective, home-buildable alternative for compact sites or _Field Day_ operations, particularly beneficial during periods of increased 10-meter activity.

Antenna modelling techniques and examples by W4RNL

Examines the practical considerations and technical challenges of deploying mobile antennas for 10-meter operation, particularly for operators on the move. It addresses the inherently _lossy_ nature of shortened, loaded vertical antennas typically used in mobile configurations, encouraging hams to view these limitations as engineering challenges. The resource provides actionable advice on safeguarding vehicle electronics, selecting appropriate cabling like _RG-213_, and properly grounding antenna mounts to the vehicle chassis. Specific mounting strategies are detailed, including roof, trunk lip, and side-mounting for trucks and vans, along with their respective advantages and drawbacks. It emphasizes the importance of a robust ground plane and suggests methods for improving grounding beyond simple set screws. The article also touches on antenna choices, mentioning "bugcatchers" and "Hamstick types" as viable options for 10 meters. Furthermore, the guide transitions to stationary mobile operation, where antenna options expand significantly. It outlines how to deploy portable dipoles or 2-element beams from a parked vehicle, offering practical tips for assembly, storage, and mast guying using simple materials like a concrete block. It notes that a 5/8 wavelength height, approximately **20 feet** on 10 meters, often yields good short-skip and DX performance, even with a take-off angle above **20 degrees**.

Notes on building a basic wire vertical or horizontal antenna for 160 meters band by L. B. Cebik, W4RNL

Examines the rationale behind L. B. Cebik, W4RNL's, consistent use of dBi for specifying antenna gain in his modeling work, contrasting it with the common practice of using dBd. The article meticulously defines decibels as relative power measurements and introduces the theoretical _isotropic radiator_ as the baseline for dBi, highlighting its utility as an unchanging constant for universal antenna comparison. It details how maximum gain in dBi allows for straightforward numerical comparisons between antennas, while also emphasizing the importance of considering other factors like horizontal beamwidth, vertical beamwidth, and elevation angle of maximum radiation for a complete performance picture. The resource then critically analyzes the concept of dBd, categorizing it into _dBd-I_ (ideal dipole), _dBd-RM_ (real modeled dipole), and _dBd-RR_ (real range dipole), exposing the ambiguities and inconsistencies inherent in these varied definitions. W4RNL argues that the lack of standardized protocols for dBd measurements, particularly in real-world test ranges, makes direct comparisons problematic without extensive supplementary data on test conditions and comparison antennas. He illustrates how these complexities often obscure rather than clarify antenna performance. Ultimately, the article advocates for dBi as the more robust and unambiguous standard for antenna modelers, especially when comparing diverse antenna types where a dipole is not a relevant benchmark. It acknowledges that range testers may continue to use dBd-RR due to practical limitations, but stresses the critical need for detailed test protocols to ensure meaningful results. The discussion underscores the ongoing challenge of correlating real-world antenna measurements with theoretical modeling.

Designing quagi and yagi antennas on 2 Meters, some preliminary notes by Cebik, W4RNL

Calculates precise dimensions for **Moxon rectangle** HF antennas, enabling hams to design antennas by inputting desired resonant frequency and wire diameter. This web-based tool, version 0.5, is a PHP front-end developed by W4/VP9KF, based on a public domain BASIC program originally authored by L. B. Cebik, W4RNL. It generates critical measurements for the driven element and reflector, ensuring proper spacing and element lengths for optimal performance. User feedback confirms the calculator's accuracy, with one user reporting resonance within 50 Hz of the design frequency for an 18 MHz antenna, eliminating the need for SWR adjustments. This contrasts with other online tools that resulted in significant frequency discrepancies. The tool's precision facilitates building **directional antennas** for specific bands, contributing to effective DXing and contesting operations.

The N0KHQ Coax Square antenna, designed for 17 meters and built using RG-58 coaxial cable, presents an intriguing option for hams with limited space. L. B. Cebik, _W4RNL_, meticulously models and analyzes this array, clarifying its classification not as a modified Moxon, but as a distinct member of the "dual-coupled, 2-element, parasitic array" family. The design leverages the velocity factor of RG-58 (approximately 0.66-0.67) to achieve significantly shorter element lengths compared to full-size counterparts, resulting in a perimeter of 42 feet for the N0KHQ array versus 54 feet for a standard Moxon. _NEC_ modeling reveals the coax square's performance characteristics, including a forward gain of 5.6 dBi and a 23.7 dB front-to-back ratio on 18.118 MHz. While slightly less gain than a Moxon (6.0 dBi), its pattern exhibits Yagi-like nulls at 90 degrees, distinguishing it from the Moxon's wider beamwidth. The article also delves into the unique feedpoint considerations, explaining how the split braid and center conductor of the RG-58 driver effectively form a folded dipole, allowing for impedance transformation to achieve a good match for 50-Ohm cable. Despite its shortened elements, which inherently narrow the operating bandwidth, the coax square maintains satisfactory performance across the 17-meter band. The analysis emphasizes that while SWR curves are important, a holistic view of gain and pattern degradation across the band is crucial. This antenna is a viable solution for operators needing a compact, directional array, particularly for narrow bands like 17, 30, or 12 meters, where its high-Q performance is most effective.

For radio amateurs seeking compact, directional antenna solutions, the Moxon Rectangle offers an attractive alternative to traditional two-element Yagis. This resource compiles several articles by L. B. Cebik, W4RNL, exploring the **Moxon Rectangle** design, which provides gain comparable to a full-size two-element array but with a significantly improved **front-to-back ratio** and a direct 50-Ohm feedpoint match. The collection covers both wire arrays, particularly for lower HF bands, and rotatable aluminum beam constructions, addressing various aspects of this popular antenna configuration. The articles delve into specific band applications, including designs for 10 meters, 40 meters, and 2 meters, alongside discussions on multi-banding techniques and pattern characteristics. Comparisons are drawn between the Moxon and other antenna types, such as VK2ABQ Squares, highlighting the Moxon's advantages in terms of size and performance. Practical construction notes are provided for both wire and aluminum versions, offering insights into building these antennas for different operating environments.

Designing **Moxon Rectangle** antennas often involves an urge among builders to find simple "magic formulas" for element lengths. L. B. Cebik, W4RNL, argues against this simplistic approach, emphasizing that antenna dimensions do not scale linearly and are influenced by factors like wire size and height above ground. This resource presents a procedure for developing sensible design equations, starting with uniform-diameter elements and perfectly conductive materials, with adjustments for real-world materials like copper and aluminum. The core of the method involves judicious **NEC modeling** (versions 2, 3, or 4) to create a baseline dataset for regression analysis, ensuring models meet specific performance standards for gain, front-to-back ratio, and feedpoint impedance. The derived equations, presented as a BASIC program, allow for calculating Moxon dimensions (A through E) based on wire diameter in wavelengths and design frequency. W4RNL demonstrates the efficacy of these equations by designing and testing Moxon Rectangles for 7.15 MHz (AWG #12 wire), 28.5 MHz (1" tubing), and 146 MHz (0.125" rod). Modeled performance data, including gain, front-to-back ratio, and feedpoint impedance, are provided for both perfect and real-world materials, showing high efficiency and close adherence to design goals. The article also references a standalone Windows program by AC6LA that automates these calculations and generates EZNEC or NEC models.
