A small application for controlling the Elecraft K3

A homebrew spectrum analyzer, the Specan, provides a crucial measurement capability often missing from the typical amateur radio shack, allowing for detailed analysis of RF signals up to 70 MHz. This double-conversion superheterodyne receiver design incorporates 112 MHz and 12 MHz intermediate frequencies, utilizing an _Si570_ as the local oscillator for fine tuning down to 1 Hz steps. It offers two resolution bandwidths: 300 KHz for broad spectrum sweeps and 1 KHz for precise close-in distortion measurements, achieving an 80 dB spur-free dynamic range at 1 KHz resolution. The project, a reboot of the classic _W7ZOI/K7TAU_ design from November 1998 QST, integrates an _Arduino_ microcontroller for controlling the Si570, managing a front-panel LCD, and communicating with a PC for spectrum plotting. This approach significantly reduces cost compared to commercial units, making advanced RF diagnostics accessible to homebrewers. The Specan can measure carrier suppression, VFO cleanliness, antenna VSWR, transmitter harmonics, and filter passband shapes, providing insights beyond what an oscilloscope or frequency counter can offer. Construction emphasizes modularity and careful shielding, with each stage built and tested individually on unetched copper clad board. The design includes detailed instructions for integrating the Arduino, building the Si570 oscillator, and aligning the various modules, often using the Specan itself for calibration. It requires a well-regulated linear power supply and can be built with common tools and readily available components, making it a practical and rewarding endeavor for those looking to enhance their RF test bench.

Where to buy solar panels for portable operations. PowerFilm panels and Genasun charge controllers in North America or in Europe

If you are having problems with RFI from Solar Panels this document from QST provides useful advice. According to this article it is possible to prevent and mitigate RF interferences, with your amateur radio equipment, by suppressing the RF either in the shack and to the solar power infrastructure.

The _Icom IC-705_ portable operation power supply guide details the use of a car battery jump starter and a step-up/down converter for field power. It examines various power supply types, including LiFePO4 batteries, lead-acid batteries, and supercapacitors, discussing their respective advantages and disadvantages for QRP and portable setups. The resource emphasizes practical considerations such as capacity, weight, discharge rates, and charging methods crucial for reliable off-grid operation. The article compares the energy density and cycle life of different battery chemistries, noting that LiFePO4 batteries offer significantly more cycles (e.g., **2000-5000 cycles**) compared to lead-acid batteries (e.g., **300-500 cycles**). It also touches upon the integration of solar panels for recharging and the importance of proper voltage regulation to protect sensitive radio equipment, providing insights into maximizing operational time during DXpeditions or POTA activations.

Details the construction of a Copper Cactus Dual-Band Super J-Pole Antenna, providing specific measurements for 1/2-inch copper tubing sections, including a 57-1/2-inch long section and a 19-inch short section, along with a 42-inch piece of 3/16-inch or 1/4-inch soft copper tubing for the matching stub. It covers soldering techniques for copper fittings, drilling an SO-239 panel mount coaxial fitting, and securing feed point connections with stainless steel adjustable band clamps. The resource specifies materials such as Schedule M 1/2-inch copper tubing, various copper fittings, a hardwood dowel or Fiberglas rod for insulation, and #14 stranded copper wire for the feed point. The guide simplifies the J-pole feed point by using an SO-239 fitting with an elongated mounting hole and band clamps, noting an optimal feed point distance of approximately 3 inches above the crossbar for proper impedance matching. It recommends a 4-turn coax choke, 5 inches in diameter, placed within 3 to 4 inches of the feed point for 2-meter operation to mitigate RF on the feedline. The project emphasizes weather sealing with silicon or butyl rubber compound and clear lacquer for durability and appearance.

Protect your radio tower and solar charged battery power supply by sending the correct Morse code transmissions. Tap out alphanumeric characters in Morse code to prevent your radio station from being destroyed by the Morse code meteor attack! Meteors may be destroyed in any order. All levels start with a fully charged battery. Each DIT uses 1% battery power. Each DAH uses 3% battery power. Your battery charges at a nominal rate of 1% every 5 seconds, and total charge increases by 1% for every correct Morse code transmission. In addition, you have two solar panels that each contribute 1% to the battery charge rate. If your solar panels are destroyed, there are no replacements for that game. When your battery runs low, an SOS prosign bonus appears. Destroy this entity to recharge your battery.

Details the installation and operation of the DX Engineering TFS Series Transmit Four Square System Phasing Units, specifically models like the DXE-TFS4-160B, DXE-TFS4-80B, and DXE-TFS4-40B. It covers system components, required parts, and a discussion of vertical antenna selection, including a table of suitable DX Engineering Monoband Vertical Antennas. Installation procedures are outlined, encompassing site selection, four square layout, topographical considerations, and noise source mitigation. Specific instructions are provided for mounting the phasing unit, antenna feedline connections using 1/4-wave 75-ohm coaxial cables, and control wire routing. The document also includes details on radial system implementation, with a table of radial wire lengths for 160, 80, 75, and 40 meters, and procedures for tuning the vertical antennas for optimal performance. Operational aspects of the Four Square Control Console are described, including front and rear panel functions, control logic (Table 4), and typical transceiver/amplifier interconnections. The system enables directional control with approximately 5 dB gain over a single vertical element in four directions or an omni-directional pattern, achieving typical front-to-back ratios exceeding 20 dB. Lightning protection and initial system testing are also addressed, along with a 5 kW CW and 10 kW PEP SSB power rating and hot switching lockout feature.

Off Grid Ham discusses the benefits of mobile ham radio operation in addition to fixed or semi-fixed base stations. The article highlights the challenges of antenna placement on vehicles, emphasizing the importance of a good ground plane for optimal performance. Tradeoffs between performance and appearance are inevitable, especially with modern vehicles that have plastic body panels. Bonding the coax shield to the car frame is often necessary to establish a good ground plane. Mobile ham radio operation is a valuable option that fills in the gaps left by fixed stations, offering flexibility and convenience for hams on the go.

Details the construction and performance of a phase-controlled receiving array, specifically a **MicroSWA** variant, optimized for QRP low band fox hunting on 40M and 80M. The resource documents the author's iterative design process, addressing significant regional noise challenges encountered during 0100-0230 UTC fox hunt periods. Initial experiments involved a director wire on a 40M vertical, yielding limited improvement, prompting a shift towards advanced null-steering techniques. The project leverages concepts from Victor Misek’s "The Beverage Antenna Handbook" and Dallas Lankford’s extensive work on phased receiving antennas for urban lots. A key modification involved integrating a new passive phase control box and a push-pull **Norton common base preamp** using 2N5109 transistors, designed for high third-order intercept performance to maintain weak signal integrity amidst strong adjacent signals. The system incorporates Faraday-shielded transformers with RG174 primaries on -75 ferrite cores, housed in ABS plastic pipe. Performance tests confirmed the MicroSWA's ability to produce deep, steerable nulls, achieving approximately 30 dB noise reduction on 160M, 80M, and 40M. This enabled detection of QRP signals undetectable on conventional transmit antennas. The final unit includes front panel controls, a 10-11 dB preamp, and a robust power conditioner, demonstrating effective noise mitigation for challenging low band QRP operations.

The **Yaesu FRG-100** shortwave receiver, introduced in 1992, operates across a frequency range of 50 kHz to 30 MHz, accommodating AM, LSB, USB, and CW modes, with an optional narrow-band FM capability.
